TREASURE HUNTERS THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF GARRETT METAL DETECTORS

Among giants of industry in Garland’s manufacturing community, one familyowned operation has been standing tall for more than 50 years. Garrett Metal Detectors is a home-grown company with an international reputation for excellence. Born from a childhood passion to find treasure and flourished out of an insatiable desire to exceed even the highest expectations, Garrett is now one of the most trusted names in metal detection. The Garrett story, as told by the founders’ son Vaughan Garrett, illustrates one of the rare occasions in which passion and preparation blend perfectly into profession. From an early age, founder Charles Garrett was fascinated by the pursuit of treasure. At just six years old, the movie Treasure Island sparked his interest, and according Vaughan, “from then on, he wanted to find treasure.”

Fast forwarding several years, Charles Garrett found career success at companies like Texas Instruments and Geotech. However, his childhood passion was not forgotten. In the early 1960s, Charles found himself underwhelmed by the quality of metal detectors on the market. Not to let his passion suffer, Charles took advantage of his combined experience from those early career endeavors to create his own solution. His advanced knowledge in mineralogy, radar and semi-conductor technology, and mechanical engineering created the perfect mix of skills allowing him to transform his Garland home garage into a workshop where he would design and build his very own detector in 1963.
