*Purchased from David Crozier Guitars in 2013. A copy of the original online listing is sold with the guitar which documents the known history as follows: 'Eddie Cross was the engraver Burns used to make all their scratchplates, headstock logos and so on the 1960s. The body of this guitar was found under Eddie's bench. It was 'fully loaded' but had not been sprayed and had the letters 'SG' in the neck pocket. This was taken to suggest surf green, so the body was finished (beautifully) in this colour. The unfretted neck was also found under the bench and was thought to have been a pattern for fretting operations. The neck is actually intended for a Split Sonic (as the eagle-eyed will have noticed from the headstock design). The two were mated together with form the guitar you see before you. Whatever the truth of the story, I bought this guitar some years ago because I was knocked out by the look of it. All the Split Sound guitars tones are there and it makes a unique package.' £300-500 7. Following Harrison's signature at the end of the letter, he writes a footnote: 'P.S. we don't like jelly babies, or fruit gums for that matter, so think how we feel standing on stage trying to dodge the stuff, before you throw some more at us. Couldn't you eat them yourselves, besides it is dangerous. I was hit in the eye once with a boiled sweet and it's not funny!'

*Provenance: ex lot 79 - Woolley & Wallis - Wednesday 15th June 2011. Sold with the original Woolley & Wallis sale catalogue and a copy of the invoice receipt £3000-5000 74

BP* - Buyer's Premium of 24% inclusive of VAT @ 20%.

The first of the letters describes how George has gone to the continent for a holiday and to sort out problems with a tour and explains all George's records are made at Friar Park. The letter then states that 'The Beatles Tapes' LP was released by Polydor who originally turned The Beatles down and thought that the LP infringes all sorts of copyrights. He then says that Friar Park does not have a 'Beatles Museum' and that the only thing that they did have was George's costume that he wore on Sgt Pepper's album and that he thinks that after it was found, George threw it away. The letter ends by describing that George doesn't worry about fan clubs and he thinks that some fans are crazy and need locking up for their own safety!.

The second letter to the same person describes how George isn't as ill as the papers are making him out to be and that he is currently working on his next album. He's not losing weight so fast that he's in danger of blowing away and blames the press for blowing all things out of proportion. Also included in the lot are two flyers for the 'Here Comes the Sun' tribute held at the BB King Blues Club & Grill in New York, one signed by Olivia Harrison, the other signed by Dhani £50-100

696. George Harrison - the original number plate (KMT 499C) from George Harrison's 1960s Aston Martin DB5, sold with 'The Beatles Book', March 1992, where the car can be seen bearing the registration on page 37

The car was built in 1964 and delivered to then Beatle George Harrison on January 1st 1965. The plates were changed at Arnold G Wilson in Yorkshire in the early 1970s when reflective registration plates became the legal standard. The number plate was then passed onto my father who had a barber shop at the time and was known for collecting car memorabilia and was given to him by a customer for a return for a lifetime's free haircuts. It has remained in the family home ever since. The front plate was in Cherry Tree pub in Leeds for several years. Kind regards Howard Storey' £500-1000

697. Jimi Hendrix - Levi Strauss & Co brass belt buckle, formerly owned and worn by Jimi Hendrix, circa 1967

Provenance: Ex lot 672 - Bonhams, 16th November 2005 - Rock 'n' Roll & Film Memorabilia. The Levi's buckle was part of lot 672 described in the original catalogue listing as "Jimi Hendrix personal effects, 1967, comprising blue denim jacket labelled Vagabond, London, a tan leather shoulder bag containing various items including four plectra, an 1887 US one dollar coin, Levi's buckle and Courage beer napkin; a pair of tan leather calf-length boots; and a pair of Adidas shoes"

Provenance from the Bonhams listing came in the form of a letter from the then vendor's sister, who acquired the items following The Experience's concert at the Pier Pavilion, Worthing, 23rd February 1967. She stated that "Jimi was booed off at the Pier Pav. Fats let me & Sue in the dressing room to see him and Mitch. He left by the back door and said we could have his change of clothes and that Worthing was a s**t place". A shirt and tie also in this group of items was sold as lot 638, Bonhams London, 25th April 1996. The current owner and vendor of the buckle is a collector of Jimi Hendrix memorabilia, a local gentleman known to Gardiner Houlgate. He was the successful bidder of lot 672 at the Bonhams auction, as documented by the Bonhams sales receipts. Over the past few years, he has been thinning out his collection and the original lot has gradually been dispersed, some of which via auction. One of these items was the tan leather bag, which was sold at Bonhams, consigned November 2011. This lot is sold with copy receipts of the Bonhams purchase, a copy of the Bonhams auction catalogue page that the lot appears on, a copy receipt of the aforementioned leather bag consignment, and a copy of the original letter of provenance that was supplied with lot 672 at the Bonhams auction. The originals have been retained by the vendor as he is still in possession of some of the effects from the original lot. Gardiner Houlgate have had sight of this original documentation. £2500-5000 698-700 NO LOT

In these conditions: (a) Reference to the 'the Auctioneer' shall be taken to mean the firm of Gardiner Houlgate or any director, partner or employee thereof at the time of sale; (b) Buyers shall be deemed to be the principals unless to the prior knowledge of the Auctioneer they are acting as agent on behalf of a named principal; (c) 'Forgery' means a lot (i) which is so constituted as deliberately to deceive when considered in the light of its catalogue description, and (ii) whose value as such is materially less that if it had complied with the catalogue description; (d) The Interpretation Act 1978 shall apply to the general construction of terms and expressions used in these Conditions as if contained in a statute. 15. Law and Jurisdiction

These Conditions of sale are subject to English law, which shall apply to their construction as well as their effect. The Seller and Buyer agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts. 16. What is Temporary Importation?

Temporary Importation is a system that applies to lots which have been imported for sale from outside the EU. It allows the point of importation to be delayed until after the sale at auction. These lots are indicated in catalogues by the use of the following symbol *

Only the Hammer Price will be treated as the import price and the Buyer’s Premium will be subject to UK domestic VAT at 20%. So whilst the Hammer Price will continue to be charged with Import VAT at 5% or 20” as appropriate, the Buyer’s Premium will always be charged with domestic VAT at 20% Lots subject to Temporary Importation will be offered under the Auctioneer’s Margin Scheme and will be subject to import VAT of either 5% or 20% on the buyer’s Premium. Anyone who wishes to buy outside the Margin Scheme should notify us immediately. An invoice under the normal VAT rules and charging VAT at 20% on both Hammer and Premium will then be issued

Temporary Importation should affect only private individual buyers who are resident within the EU. Anyone who is registered for VAT in the EU should be able to recover the VAT on the Buyer’s Premium either on their VAT returns or through the 8th Directive Refund Scheme. Any non-EU buyer who exports the lots from the EU will be able to have the VAT refunded provided the appropriate export regulations are complied with 17. Property sold with a * Symbol

These items have been imported from outside the EU to be sold at auction under temporary importation. When Gardiner Houlgate releases such property to buyers in the UK, the buyer will become the importer and must pay Gardiner Houlgate import VAT at 5% on the Hammer Price

These lots will be invoiced under the Auctioneer’s Margin Scheme. Gardiner Houlgate must bear VAT on the Buyer’s Premium and hence charge an amount in lieu of VAT at 20% on this Premium. This amount will form part of the Buyer’s Premium on our invoice and will not be separately identified VAT registered buyers from the EU should note that the import VAT charged on property released in the UK cannot be cancelled or refunded by Gardiner Houlgate VAT registered buyers from the UK should note that the invoice issued by Gardiner Houlgate for these items is not suitable evidence in respect of import VAT

VAT registered buyers from the EU countries may be able to seek repayment of the import VAT paid by applying to HM Revenue and Customs. On request, immediately after the sale, the office can either ask HM Revenue and Customs to generate a C79 certificate (for UK buyers), or obtain a copy of the import C88 (for other EU VAT registered buyers), which may be used to claim recovery of the VAT. Otherwise Gardiner Houlgate may re-invoice the lot and charge VAT at 20% on both the Hammer Price and the Premium and provide a tax invoice to the buyer 18. CITES Restrictions

As of 2 January 2017, new laws came into effect to control the import and export of all items made with rosewood. Any lots containing any amount of rosewood will therefore be subject to restrictions when exporting outside of the EU. It will be the buyer’s responsibility to make sure that the relevant paperwork is in place before shipping Some lots are sold with CITES article 10 certificates, allowing the commercial use of an item containing an endangered species. Lots subject to this are marked in the catalogue 19. Gemstones

Many gemstones have been treated in various ways to enhance their appearance. For example, sapphires and rubies are routinely heat treated and emerald treated with oils and resins. Some stones may require re-treating or oiling periodically.
