PETE OVEREND WATTS (MOTT THE HOOPLE) (lOTs1-99) Peter "Pete" Overend Watts (13 May 1947 – 22 January 2017) was an English bass guitarist and founding member of the iconic 1970s rock band Mott the Hoople.
Born in Yardley, Birmingham, on 13 May 1947, he moved to Worthing, Sussex, as a child and later to Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire. He started learning guitar when he was 13 whilst at Ross Grammar School. By 1965 he switched to bass and became a professional musician alongside Mick Ralphs in a group called the Buddies, playing in Germany and Italy.
The group later became the Doc Thomas Group, and then Shakedown Sound, before finally changing their name to Silence and settling in London in 1969. The addition of singer Ian Hunter saw the band become Mott the Hoople. Manager Guy Stevens, asked Pete to go out under his middle name ‘Overend’. This was a family name passed down through generations. Watts adopted the stage name ‘Overend Watts’. Pete’s iconic look was created by Watts' bass of choice, a white Gibson Thunderbird, matched with his thigh high white boots.
The band's 1969 debut album, Mott the Hoople became a cult success but unfortunately the following three albums (Mad Shadows (1970), Wildlife (1971) and Brain Capers (1971)) didn’t fare so well. Following a depressing concert in Switzerland, combined with an aborted UK tour, the band was close to breaking up.
Pete phoned David Bowie to ask if he required his services as a bass player. When Bowie heard that the band were close to an end, he persuaded them to stay together, gifting them All the Young Dudes and producing the album under the same name. This song shot Mott the Hoople to success and would become one of the most iconic tracks of the era. The 1973 album Mott became the band’s best seller in the USA and included two UK hits, Honaloochie Boogie and All the Way from Memphis. 1974 was an eventful year for the band. Chart success came again with Roll Away the Stone and the band went on to have the iconic US tour, with support from Queen. The 1974 albums The Hoople and Live were released, followed by the departure of Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson, The band subsequently abbreviated the name to Mott. Watts continued, and with various line up changes and two albums later, the band transformed into British Lions, releasing two albums before splitting up following no chart success.
In January 2009 it was confirmed that Watts and the other original members of Mott the Hoople would reform for three 40th anniversary reunion concerts in October 2009. The reunion at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo, London, England was extended to five shows due to popular demand. In November 2013 Mott the Hoople again reunited, with Martin Chambers sitting in for Buffin on drums, for a series of UK gigs in Birmingham, Glasgow, Newcastle and Manchester, before concluding at the 02 in London Watts was known for his long-distance walks. His book The Man Who Hated Walking was published in 2013. Watts sadly died on 22 January 2017 at the age of 69.
In September 2017, his debut solo album He’s Real Gone, was posthumously released.
We are delighted to offer the following instruments and ephemera on behalf of Pete’s family. Over 100 lots include his personal collection of weird and wonderful guitars and career related memorabilia, amassed over his forty-year career. 4

HUW LLOyD-LANGTON (lOTs100-119) Richard Hugh "Huw" Lloyd-Langton (6 February 1951 – 6 December 2012) A self taught - self styled guitarist/songwriter/singer with extraordinary talent. Huw read and wrote both rock and classical music. and is renowned as an original member of HAWKWIND.
Born in Harlesden, North London, Huw started playing guitar at school. His first professional gig was in Germany with WINSTON G, with whom he toured continuously for six months.
After this jaunt in 1969, Huw returned to the UK and joined HAWKWIND with Dave Brock, Jon Harrison, Terry Ollis & Dik Mik. He remained with them for over two years, recording their first two LPs. Due to illness in late 1971 he left (occasionally joining them), returning full time in 1979 when their LP 'LIVE 79' went straight in the top 10 UK charts. In fact everything they did between 1979 and 1985 was either in the pop, heavy metal or independent charts
1971 to 1979 came a variety of gigs including a 2-year acoustic stint in vegetarian restaurant PASTURES, London, teaching guitar at a comprehensive school in Streatham for a year, 6 months with LEO SAYER touring the UK & Europe and various other band situations. From 1974 to 1978 he joined WIDOMAKER touring the USA and recording 2 LPs, which charted there. Line-up included Steve Ellis- LOVE AFFAIR, Aerial Bender- MOTT THE HOOPLE, Bob Daisley-RAINBOW, Paul Nicholls LINDISFARNE and John Butler. In 1979 he re-joined HAWKWIND where he remained for the next 10 years.
In 1982 Huw formed LLOYD LANGTON GROUP (LLG) to gig between HAWKWIND quiet periods. LLG had two singles and two LPs in the Heavy Metal charts during the '80s. During this period, he had his own column in GUITARIST magazine for six months titled 'Langton's Lead Lines'.
Since 1989: Huw joined PRETTY THINGS on one European tour, toured Italy in '93 with DR BROWN, and toured the UK several times with LLG. During the spring of '95 Hooples toured Sweden with Ray Majors’ MOTT THE HOOPLES’ last guitarist and has been back twice with the LLOYD LANGTON GROUP. August '97 saw Huw join Hawkwind as a special guest at Blackheath Concert Halls raising over £8,500 for Shelter's work with the Homeless. During 1993 to 1998 Huw also taught guitar at the Kilburn Community Centre and performed numerous solo acoustic concerts in UK, Denmark and Sweden. Huw's last LLG CD 'Chain Reaction' was released in 1999.
Later work would include rereleases and further work on LLG recordings as well as many reunion performances with HAWKWIND.
Ill health hampered the latter part of Huw’s career. He sadly passed away at his home on 6 December 2012, aged 61 years old, after a two-year fight with cancer. We are pleased to offer the following instruments and ephemera on behalf of Huw’s family. These twenty lots include the tools of his trade and memorabilia connected to his forty year career.

Booker White
Booker “Bukka” White (12th November 1909 – 26th February 1977) was an influential African-American Delta Blues guitarist from Mississippi, USA, active from the late 1920s until his passing in 1977. He was best known for his slide work on National Resonator guitars and recordings put out by early labels including Victor, Vocalion and Okeh. His musical career started by playing the fiddle at square dances with a change of instrument after his father gifted him a guitar on his ninth birthday. Booker honed his craft in the following years and cites Charlie Patten as a big influence, whom he also claimed to have met. Both Booker White and Son House (with his National Style 0) are considered pioneers of Delta Blues slide guitar and a main inspiration for the fascination with National resonator guitars as we know it today. Son House himself was likely influenced by the great man if Booker’s word is to be believed, quoted as saying “Son House got that slide from me, he wasn’t using no slide when I run up on him. He wasn’t using even the bottleneck, too. And after, the next time I’d see him, he had a bottleneck. And so he’s been bottlenecking ever since”. Booker first recorded in 1930 for Victor who released two records under the name “Washington White”. Some years later, whilst serving time for assault in Mississippi State Penitentiary (Parchman Farm), he recorded some of his best-known work including “Shake ‘Em On Down”, which is considered definitive. His experience at the State Penitentiary is written about in “Parchman Farm Blues” which was released in 1940.
Booker’s chances of commercial success in the 1930s largely ended with his imprisonment in 1937. During this time the music world had quickly moved on. His classic brand of country blues was now considered outdated, especially when artists such as Muddy Waters would burst onto the scene with amplified electric blues. However, in time, the recordings made by Booker in 1940 would be considered the greatest of all blues music. In the February 2010 issue of ‘Downbeat’ magazine, Frank-John Hadley stated that Booker’s 1940 Vocalion recordings arguably rival Robert Johnson’s body of work in artistry and poignancy.
Bob Dylan’s 1962 cover of “Fixin’ to Die Blues” aided the rediscovery of Booker in 1963, where he found fame within the Folk Revival scene of the 1960s. This later fame and subsequent touring allowed Booker to travel the world and it was the 1967 UK “American Folk-Blues Festival” which set up what would become a long-distance friendship between Booker White and Newcastle based photographer, Keith Perry.
Hard Rock
On Monday 23rd October 1967, Keith Perry attended the American Folk-Blues Festival at Newcastle City Hall. Even though he was only 24 years old, his profession meant that he was already well acquainted with two world-famous musicians on the bill, Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry. Keith recalls that Brownie met him at the stage door before the concert and said ‘Come through, I want you to meet a real legend of the blues’. Keith walked though and was staggered to see Booker White sprawled out on a piano stool. Keith had a chance to chat to Booker and take pictures of him in the dressing room and on stage. A second meeting between the pair happened in November 1970 when the American FolkBlues Festival arrived at the Sunderland Empire. Again, with Brownie, Sonny and Booker all in tow, more backstage images were taken. Following this, Brownie came over on tour again in 1973. He asked Keith if he had ever kept in touch with Booker. Keith said that he hadn’t, and Brownie encouraged him to send over some of the photographs that he had taken, as he was still enjoying his rediscovered fame. Brownie gave Keith Booker’s Memphis address and he sent Booker the photographs as Brownie has suggested, along with a letter offering to send over a tape of all his old recordings. Keith had heard that he didn’t have copies himself. It wasn’t long before Keith received a hand-written letter from Booker, so set to work compiling a tape of Booker’s recordings from the 1930s and 1940s. At the end of each letter, Keith noticed that Booker had included his home phone number. Keith began to ‘phone Booker and the pair would have many long conversations. Within the space of a few months a special transatlantic friendship had developed. In 1976 during an informal call with Booker, Keith had touched on the subject of acquiring a National guitar. Keith’s friend Jim Murray had one at the time, which was the first that he had seen in the UK. Keith was looking everywhere for a similar model and said to Booker ‘If you ever hear of a guitar similar to yours come up in the States, I’d be very interested to know about it.’ To Keith’s amazement Booker responded, ‘Well, you’ve been good to me. You’ve sent tapes and photographs over to me. If you send me the cost of postage and packaging, I’ll give you my old guitar’. This was an opportunity that Keith simply could not turn down. This wasn’t any old guitar, it was Booker’s prized working instrument. One that had been by his side for three decades. “Hard Rock”, as it was affectionately named, was Booker’s instrument of choice and best suited to his brand of aggressive slide playing. Booker once said “It is loud, I don’t need no mike and also I play so rough. I would have busted many a guitar, but this one can stand rain and punishment. I stomp them, I don’t peddle them”. Whether travelling the world or sat on a stool on Leath Street entertaining neighbours and friends, Hard Rock was Booker’s constant companion. Hard Rock Café founder Isaac Tigrett recalls “I spent many an hour on Bukka’s front porch listening to him play that guitar at his home in Memphis”. Although the roots of Hard Rock Café’s name are unknown, it is an interesting connection between the founder of the world-famous chain and the name of Booker’s main instrument.

Strapped for cash at the time, Keith arranged a bank loan to cover the cost of shipping and insurance and transferred the money to Booker’s account. Three or four weeks later, on Friday 21st May 1976, Keith received a call from the Newcastle airport customs department that the guitar had arrived but that the import duty needed to be settled. Keith went to the airport to collect the guitar and settled the import duty later that evening. When Keith arrived home, he unpacked the guitar and found it exactly how Booker had left it. Within the case was Booker original strap, slide and tone-bar. On the handle was a shipping label bearing Booker’s address from when he had travelled with the guitar during the 1960s. The guitar’s side bearing Booker’s original set list held on with Scotch tape. A letter shortly arrived from Booker, anxious to hear news about his beloved Hard Rock. By this time, he had acquired a new instrument, a National Style 0, which he named “Lovene”. Booker used this guitar as his instrument of choice for a little under a year until he sadly passed away in February 1977.
A Holy Relic
Already steeped in history, Hard Rock’s story does not end there. Whilst Keith mourned the loss of a hero and friend, he was keen to not shut the guitar away, but to put the instrument into the hands of musicians that he felt would appreciate its rich history and value. Keith, through his photographic profession, documented many meetings between Hard Rock and famous names such as Mark & David Knopfler, Don McLean, Lonnie Donnegan, Bill Wyman, Brian Johnson, Dave Stewart and Derek Trucks.
One very special meeting happened on 18th April 1984, when Keith met Booker’s cousin, none other than the great B.B King at a hotel in Gateshead. B.B King recalls ‘I remember this guitar when I used to come up to Memphis to make the big time’. ‘Booker used to keep this guitar on top of his wardrobe’. This would have been in the 1940s. Keith’s photograph of B.B King with Hard Rock features in B.B King’s Autobiography ‘Blues All Around Me’. In the autobiography he describes the guitar as a “Holy Relic”. B.B King also cites Booker as being one of his three main influences along with Django Reinhardt and T. Bone Walker. On a side note, a famous mural of B.B King with Lucille, which resides on a building in Inianola, Mississippi, mimics one of Keith’s original photographs. Another special series of events in Hard Rock’s journey was when Keith had the chance to offer Eric Bibb the opportunity to see the guitar. On Thursday 10th May 2001, Keith went to see Eric perform at Newcastle Opera House. After the show, encouraged by his son Richard during an autograph session, Keith asked Eric if he liked Booker White’s music. After Eric responded that he was a big fan, Keith told him about the guitar and would be happy to show it to him the next morning if he’d like. The following day, Eric and Keith met and in awe of the instrument Eric explained “I can feel a song coming on”. This was around the period that Eric wrote the song ‘Tell Riley’, which was a heartfelt tribute to B.B King written from the viewpoint of Booker White. Eric was honoured to be able to play a guitar that was Booker’s main instrument and that B.B King had described as a Holy Relic. Before parting Eric mentioned to Keith that he would like to come back and record with the guitar and that they should keep in touch. Five years later, on 14th October 2006, Eric was performing at The Sage, Gateshead and met with Keith the next day to reacquaint himself with the guitar. He told Keith that he would like to write a song about the guitar and again come back and record with it. It was a further two years before work would commence on the project. On Monday 1st September 2008 a session was booked at Broadwater Studios, Gateshead, for the recording to take place of Eric’s tribute, simply entitled ‘Booker’s Guitar’. Eric had already sent Keith a demo recording of the track as well as hand-written lyrics to sit in the case with the guitar. The song was recorded in six takes and became the opening track of what inspired an entire album - ‘Booker’s Guitar’. The album was released on 26th January 2010. Keith was delighted that Eric had chosen one of his images for the cover. The album went on to achieve critical acclaim and worldwide success, most notably, Best Blues Album in Downbeat’s 58th Annual Critics Poll. On 3rd May 2010, Eric recorded a video short at The Sage, Gateshead. The video shows Eric playing and talking about the guitar and can be seen online via - https://vimeo.com/87030985
The Guitar
Booker’s Hard Rock is a 1933 National Duolian, a unique transitional model which featured the larger body and ‘rolled in’ f-holes that are found on subsequent smaller Nationals made from 1934 onwards. The serial number (C7074) confirms Hard Rock as a 1933 model, even though production of this particular instrument continued well into 1934. This short-lived transitional model, which combines the best of previous and subsequent models makes the ‘33s the most desirable of the Duolian model.

CONDITIONsOFsAle The Auctioneer acts only as agent for the Seller (unless otherwise specifically declared). Lots sold are likely to have been subject to wear and tear caused by user or the effects of age and may therefore have faults and imperfections. Buyers are given ample opportunity at viewing times to examine lots to be sold and will be assumed to have done so. They must rely solely on their own skill or judgement as to whether lots are fit for any particular purpose. 1. Bids
All bids made shall be treated as offers made upon these Conditions of Sale and all persons present are admitted to a sale on the basis that they have notice of these Conditions. 2. Ascertainment of the Buyer
The Buyer shall be the person making the highest bid which is acceptable to the Auctioneer as signified by the fall of the hammer. No bid may be retracted. In the case of a dispute the Auctioneer may either declare the purchaser or put the lot up again. 3. Auctioneer's discretion
The Auctioneer has sole discretion, (a) to refuse any bid, (b) to advance the bidding as he may decide, (c) to withdraw or divide any lot or combine one lot with another or others, (d) to exclude any person from the auction rooms, and (e) to require pre-payment in full. 4. Reserves and Seller's right to bid
Lots put up for sale are subject, (a) to any reserve price imposed by the Seller, (b) the right of the Auctioneer to bid on behalf of the Seller, and (c) where no reserve has been imposed (but in no other case) for the Seller to bid personally or through any one agent. It is the responsibility of the Seller to ensure any reserves are received by the Auctioneer. 5. Buyer's Duties
The Buyer shall forthwith or as soon as possible after the sale, (a) supply his name and address, (b) supply, if so required, bank or other suitable references, (c) pay the full purchase price in a way acceptable to the Auctioneer, notwithstanding any prior arrangement for advance payment required by the Auctioneer, and (d) on proof of payment clear the lots purchased by the times specified. Lots may not be cleared during the sale except by permission of the Auctioneer. 6. Payments
Methods of payment include direct bank transfer, debit card, credit card, cash to a maximum of £9000, Building Society cheque or Banker's draft. Cheques will only be accepted when supported by a guarantee card. For fraud protection we no longer accept payments by credit or debit cards for ‘Customer not Present’ transactions. Card payments at the saleroom will be accepted but must be supported by Chip and PIN. Card payments for live internet bidding will only be accepted if they have been AVS and 3D Secure authorised with a maximum transaction value of £500. All payments accepted at the discretion of the auctioneer. 7. Liability of the Auctioneer and Sellers
Subject to Condition 8: (a) faults and imperfections (if any) are not stated in the catalogue and neither the Seller nor the Auctioneer is responsible for any defects whatsoever, (b) no warranty is given or authorised to be given by the Seller or the Auctioneer with regard to any lot other than the Seller's right to sell it, (c) any express or implied conditions or warranties relating to description or quality, are hereby excluded. 8. Catalogue Descriptions
Descriptive statements contained in the advertisements or catalogues or made up by the Auctioneer or any member of his staff should be taken as matters of opinion only and shall not be taken as statement of fact. i) Items in the catalogue are sold as seen. Where possible significant damage is mentioned, but this does not include all faults and imperfections. The absence of such reference does not imply that the lot is in good condition or free from restoration or repair. Condition reports are available upon request ii) ’Inscribed’ or ‘Signed’ does not imply that the lot is wholly or partly by that maker 9. Forgeries
Notwithstanding Conditions 6 and 7, if the Auctioneer receives notice in writing from the Buyer WITHIN 7 DAYS OF THE SALE that in his opinion a lot is a forgery (as defined in Condition 12) and on giving such notification the lot in question is returned to the Auctioneer at his working premises in the same condition as when bought, then if on considering such evidence as the Buyer supplies to prove his assertion, the Auctioneer decides that the lot is a forgery the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price repaid to the Buyer. 10. Property in lots and risk
The Buyer shall not become the owner of any lot, and the Auctioneer shall have a lien thereon, until the Buyer has discharged the purchase price in full together with any other charges due, but after the fall of the hammer the risk of damage or loss shall nevertheless be the Buyer's. 11. The Premium
The Buyer shall pay to the Auctioneer a premium of 20% of the hammer price together with VAT on such premium. Additional premium of 2.5% + VAT of the hammer price will be incurred when bidding via the online platform 'GH Live' Live bidding will also available via the-saleroom.com, additional premium of 4.95% + VAT at the imposed rate will be incurred on the hammer price. 12. The Auctioneer reserves the right to charge storage of 50p per lot per day on any lot or lots uncleared by the time specified together with any removal expenses. In addition, interest will be charged at 2.5% per month or part thereof (34.4% APR) on any accounts that remain unpaid in part or full 1 week after the sale. Interest and storage will be charged from the date of sale. In addition, the Buyer shall be liable for all legal and court costs incurred by the
Auctioneers in pursuit of payment from the Buyer. The Auctioneer reserves the right to refuse any cheques and will not release lots purchased until evidence has been received that any cheque accepted has been cleared. 13. Release of Goods
Payment and clearance should be made within seven days after the sale. Goods will not be released until fully payment has been received and a paid invoice produced. For clients arranging courier or third party collection: written instruction must be received by the purchaser; identification will be requested from the courier and their vehicle’s registration number taken. For security purposes our premises are monitored by 24 hour CCTV 14. Definitions and interpretation
In these conditions: (a) Reference to the 'the Auctioneer' shall be taken to mean the firm of Gardiner Houlgate or any director, partner or employee thereof at the time of sale; (b) Buyers shall be deemed to be the principals unless to the prior knowledge of the Auctioneer they are acting as agent on behalf of a named principal; (c) 'Forgery' means a lot (i) which is so constituted as deliberately to deceive when considered in the light of its catalogue description, and (ii) whose value as such is materially less that if it had complied with the catalogue description; (d) The Interpretation Act 1978 shall apply to the general construction of terms and expressions used in these Conditions as if contained in a statute. 15. Law and Jurisdiction
These Conditions of sale are subject to English law, which shall apply to their construction as well as their effect. The Seller and Buyer agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts. 16. What is Temporary Importation?
Temporary Importation is a system that applies to lots which have been imported for sale from outside the EU. It allows the point of importation to be delayed until after the sale at auction. These lots are indicated in catalogues by the use of the following symbol *
Only the Hammer Price will be treated as the import price and the Buyer’s Premium will be subject to UK domestic VAT at 20%. So whilst the Hammer Price will continue to be charged with Import VAT at 5% or 20” as appropriate, the Buyer’s Premium will always be charged with domestic VAT at 20% Lots subject to Temporary Importation will be offered under the Auctioneer’s Margin Scheme and will be subject to import VAT of either 5% or 20% on the buyer’s Premium. Anyone who wishes to buy outside the Margin Scheme should notify us immediately. An invoice under the normal VAT rules and charging VAT at 20% on both Hammer and Premium will then be issued
Temporary Importation should affect only private individual buyers who are resident within the EU. Anyone who is registered for VAT in the EU should be able to recover the VAT on the Buyer’s Premium either on their VAT returns or through the 8th Directive Refund Scheme. Any non-EU buyer who exports the lots from the EU will be able to have the VAT refunded provided the appropriate export regulations are complied with 17. Property sold with a * Symbol
These items have been imported from outside the EU to be sold at auction under temporary importation. When Gardiner Houlgate releases such property to buyers in the UK, the buyer will become the importer and must pay Gardiner Houlgate import VAT at 5% on the Hammer Price
These lots will be invoiced under the Auctioneer’s Margin Scheme. Gardiner Houlgate must bear VAT on the Buyer’s Premium and hence charge an amount in lieu of VAT at 20% on this Premium. This amount will form part of the Buyer’s Premium on our invoice and will not be separately identified VAT registered buyers from the EU should note that the import VAT charged on property released in the UK cannot be cancelled or refunded by Gardiner Houlgate VAT registered buyers from the UK should note that the invoice issued by Gardiner Houlgate for these items is not suitable evidence in respect of import VAT
VAT registered buyers from the EU countries may be able to seek repayment of the import VAT paid by applying to HM Revenue and Customs. On request, immediately after the sale, the office can either ask HM Revenue and Customs to generate a C79 certificate (for UK buyers), or obtain a copy of the import C88 (for other EU VAT registered buyers), which may be used to claim recovery of the VAT. Otherwise Gardiner Houlgate may re-invoice the lot and charge VAT at 20% on both the Hammer Price and the Premium and provide a tax invoice to the buyer 18. CITES Restrictions
As of 2 January 2017, new laws came into effect to control the import and export of all items made with rosewood. Any lots containing any amount of rosewood will therefore be subject to restrictions when exporting outside of the EU. It will be the buyer’s responsibility to make sure that the relevant paperwork is in place before shipping Some lots are sold with CITES article 10 certificates, allowing the commercial use of an item containing an endangered species. Lots subject to this are marked in the catalogue 19. Gemstones
Many gemstones have been treated in various ways to enhance their appearance. For example, sapphires and rubies are routinely heat treated and emerald treated with oils and resins. Some stones may require re-treating or oiling periodically. Enhancement affects market value and all Gardiner Houlgate estimates assume that gemstones may have been enhanced, in any case all lots are sold as seen and purchasers are deemed to have satisfied themselves as to condition and any possibly treatment of stones 20. Artists Resale Rights (or Droit de Suite)
On certain lots marked in the catalogues and which are sold for a hammer price of 1000 Euros or greater (converted into the currency of the sale using The Design and Artists Copyright Society threshold calculator on the date of the Sale) the Additional Premium will be the percentage of the amount of the Hammer Price calculated as follows: 0-50,000 Euros 4%
50,000.01 to 200,000 3%
200,000.01 to 350,000 1%
350,000.01 to 500,000 0.5% Exceeding 500,000 0.25%
