180. Pink Floyd - Ampeg Model V-4 guitar amplifier head, ser. no. 108582; with Ampeg V-4 speaker cabinet, ser. no. 124874, within an Anvill flight case bearing three 'Pink Floyd, Fragile' stencils to the front, back and top, also bearing a stencilled stage position number 'ST72' to the front, top and sides, the top of the case bearing tape inscribed 'Wall, Berlin' and another inscribed 'Third Rehearsal', also a Pan Am cargo label

*This amplifier was purchased by the vendor via Roger Waters' tech after his own amplifier broke down. The vendor later acquired an email from Pete Cornish (a renowned tech who worked on Pink Floyd's gear), stating that he converted the amp and installed the new mains lead in September/ October 1979. Pete also confirms that the PAT test sticker on the back dated 3/9/79, is one of his and that this serial number matches an invoice made out to 'Pink Floyd Music'. The 'Wall, Berlin' label, would suggest that the amp was later used for Roger Waters' 1990 'The Wall - Live in Berlin' Phil Taylor, David Gilmour's backline technician since 1974 has supplied us with the following statement: "The Ampeg V4 amp and cabinet are part of the 2 x V4 heads and 3 x 4x12 cabinets that were purchased for Pink Floyd by myself from Hanich Music in West Covina, CA in May 1977. Grover Jackson at Anvil cases organised making the flight cases for them. These were purchased at the request of Snowy White who was the second guitar player - replacing the Fender Dual Showmans that he had been using up until then on the Pink Floyd Animals Tour 1977 - he used the Ampegs on the second US leg in June and July 1977. I had Pete Cornish work on the amps in 1979 to service, re tap the voltage etc. as part of my preparations for the original 'The Wall' shows rehearsals in late 1979 as Snowy would be playing. However, Snowy choose to use a combination of a Fender Dual Showman with 2 x15 cab and a Hiwatt 100 with WEM 4x12 cab - the Ampegs were not used again on Pink Floyd shows. Their ownership passed to Roger Waters in the early 1980s when Pink Floyd equipment assets were split.

A photograph documenting the meeting in the studio is included and depicts Mr Faulkner holding the guitar with Bruno Brookes. 188. Maurice Gibb (Bee Gees) - 1968 Gibson EBS-1250 double neck bass / electric guitar, made in USA, ser. no. 929990; Finish: walnut, buckle rash to the back and further blemishes as to be expected for age; Fretboard: rosewood; Frets: generally good; Electrics: working, bass neck pickup replaced with a DiMarzio and with coil switch added to the scratchplate (original retained); Hardware: generally good, replaced control knob; Case: fitted hard case in tired condition bearing three Bee Gees stencil logos to the front *Purchased from Maurice Gibb, circa 1974. The vendor and Gibb were acquainted having played on the 'circuit' together in the 1960s and later living a few miles away from each other in Oxfordshire. The two had stayed in touch over the years talking, amongst other things, about Gibb potentially buying back the EBS1250 until sadly, he suddenly died. Gibb had told the vendor that the guitar was custom made for him by Gibson to his requirements. He also told the vendor that it was him who sprayed the Bee Gees stencils on the guitar case. The DiMarzio pickup was a modification that Gibb carried out. The original Gibson pickup is included. A picture of Maurice Gibb playing the guitar is provided and videos can be seen online of him playing it - see 'Bee Gees - My World Stereo' on YouTube. A statement of provenance from the vendor is included.

The Gibson EBS-1250 model was made in very small numbers, with Gibson records showing that only 22 were ever shipped. Due to lack of production, Gibson stopped recording shipping numbers of this model in 1967, with only 3 being made in that year. It is possible that this could be the only EBS-1250 made in 1968 ÂŁ7,000-10,000

189. George Harrison - Maton Mastersound MS-500 electric guitar, stage-played with The Beatles during July & August, 1963

*In the summer of 1963, George Harrison's Gretsch Country Gentleman was experiencing problems and was taken to Barratts in Manchester to be repaired. Whilst repairs were made, shop owner Brian Higham gave the Maton to Neil Aspinall for Harrison to use. The Country Gent was quickly repaired and Higham returned it the same evening. It is thought that this was on 3rd July, when The Beatles appeared at The Playhouse Theatre in Manchester. Harrison liked the Maton and when asked, Higham agreed to let him hang on to it for while. Photographic evidence confirms that Harrison played the Maton in concert on the 8th-13th July at The Winter Gardens in Margate, 2nd August at The Grafton Rooms in Liverpool, 3rd August at a photo call at The Cavern Club in Liverpool (significantly, The Beatles last performance at The Cavern Club) and 6th-10th August at Candie Gardens, Guernsey. After the Maton was returned to Barratts, Dave Berry and The Cruisers guitarist Roy Barber swapped it for his Fender Stratocaster. He was told that the guitar was the one used by Harrison and that it had also previously belonged to a member of the Hollies. Letters of authenticity from former band mates Dave Berry, John Fleet and Eric Haydock recall this information. An image shows Hollies guitarist Tony Hicks holding a Maton Mastersound guitar. Barber used the guitar for several years, later putting it into storage.

After Roy Barber's death, his widow, Val, auctioned the guitar at Sotheby's Olympia on 14th June 2002 (ex lot 315 'Rock & Roll Fashion and Memorabilia'). The guitar was exhibited at The Beatles Story Museum in Liverpool from 2014-2015 and then offered at Juliens Auctions, New York on 16th May 2015 (ex lot 424 'Music Icons') with a listed hammer price of $485,000. Following the sale, the guitar was returned to The Beatles story, where it has been exhibited ever since.

The guitar is featured on pages 156 - 160 in Andy Babuik's book - Beatles Gear: All The Fab Four's Instruments, from Stage to Studio, The Ultimate Edition. The Letters of authenticity from Roy Barber's former band mates Dave Berry, John Fleet and Eric Haydock, amonsgt other paperwork are included in the sale. Copies of the letters are available to view. The original documents are currently held by the vendor and will be made available to the winning bidder. This Maton Mastersound MS-500 model features a natural flame maple finish, sunburst maple back, bound Australian black bean 22 fret fingerboard, black scratchplate, two pickups, two volume and two tone knobs, three-way selector switch and Bigsby vibrato.

Maton guitars was founded in Australia in 1944 by Bill May, making an array of quality archtop guitars. Some years later electric guitars were added to the line, with the MS-500 being introduced circa 1958. Only a very small number of Maton guitars made it into the UK in the early 1960s ÂŁ300,000-400,000

Bessons' John (Jack) Duarte travelled to Baiersdorf in the late 1940s to meet Fred Wilfer and his team of post war violin makers to discuss the possibilities of them building his new design for Besson in the UK. This extraordinary instrument was the result. According to the vendor, who spoke to Duarte about the guitar, it was heavily modified to make it financially viable to produce. This prototype was carved in its entirety from solid fiddle back maple and the sound hole and cats eyes were just 'too violin'. Eventually, after several visits, a version of the Aristone was put in production but all are quite different from this historic first. Duarte signed them in the early to mid '50s, this is also signed and is original except for the machines. The originals are retained £700-1000

302. Watkins Sitar electric guitar constructed by Keith Smart, Stagg hard case

*From the collection of Keith Smart. Keith worked for Sid Watkins circa 1979 and made Copicats and also amp cabinets etc. This was the workshop that produced Watkins guitars, later Wilson guitars. Sid gave Keith a very old Watkins body and an early neck and bought the pickups from him. Keith painted the guitar and, years later, a friend cut a clear Perspex cover to shape the body to protect the paintwork and also fitted an EYB sitar bridge. The guitar was used in the studio with '60s band Nirvana and can be heard on the song Orange and Blue. The guitar was also used with the band St. John's Wood Affair during a recording of their album £150-250

CONDITIONS OF SALE The Auctioneer acts only as agent for the Seller (unless otherwise specifically declared). Lots sold are likely to have been subject to wear and tear caused by user or the effects of age and may therefore have faults and imperfections. The Auctioneer has sole discretion, (a) to refuse any bid, (b) to advance the bidding as he may decide, (c) to withdraw or divide any lot or combine one lot with another or others, (d) to exclude any person from the auction rooms, and (e) to require pre-payment in full. 4. In these conditions: (a) Reference to the 'the Auctioneer' shall be taken to mean the firm of Gardiner Houlgate or any director, partner or employee thereof at the time of sale; (b) Buyers shall be deemed to be the principals unless to the prior knowledge of the Auctioneer they are acting as agent on behalf of a named principal; (c) 'Forgery' means a lot (i) which is so constituted as deliberately to deceive when considered in the light of its catalogue description, and (ii) whose value as such is materially less that if it had complied with the catalogue description; (d) The Interpretation Act 1978 shall apply to the general construction of terms and expressions used in these Conditions as if contained in a statute. 15. law and Jurisdiction

These Conditions of sale are subject to English law, which shall apply to their construction as well as their effect. The Seller and Buyer agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts. 16. What is Temporary Importation?

Temporary Importation is a system that applies to lots which have been imported for sale from outside the EU. It allows the point of importation to be delayed until after the sale at auction. These lots are indicated in catalogues by the use of the following symbol *

Only the Hammer Price will be treated as the import price and the Buyer’s Premium will be subject to UK domestic VAT at 20%. So whilst the Hammer Price will continue to be charged with Import VAT at 5% or 20” as appropriate, the Buyer’s Premium will always be charged with domestic VAT at 20%

Lots subject to Temporary Importation will be offered under the Auctioneer’s Margin Scheme and will be subject to import VAT of either 5% or 20% on the buyer’s Premium. Anyone who wishes to buy outside the Margin Scheme should notify us immediately. An invoice under the normal VAT rules and charging VAT at 20% on both Hammer and Premium will then be issued

6. Payments

Temporary Importation should affect only private individual buyers who are resident within the EU. Anyone who is registered for VAT in the EU should be able to recover the VAT on the Buyer’s Premium either on their VAT returns or through the 8th Directive Refund Scheme. Any non-EU buyer who exports the lots from the EU will be able to have the VAT refunded provided the appropriate export regulations are complied with

7. liability of the Auctioneer and Sellers

These items have been imported from outside the EU to be sold at auction under temporary importation. When Gardiner Houlgate releases such property to buyers in the UK, the buyer will become the importer and must pay Gardiner Houlgate import VAT at 5% on the Hammer Price

Due to a recent rise in card fraud, we are no longer able to accept payments by credit or debit cards for ‘Customer not Present’ transactions at the discretion of the auctioneers. Card payments at the saleroom are still accepted, but must be supported by Chip and PIN Subject to Condition 8: (a) faults and imperfections (if any) are not stated in the catalogue and neither the Seller nor the Auctioneer is responsible for any defects whatsoever, (b) no warranty is given or authorised to be given by the Seller or the Auctioneer with regard to any lot other than the Seller's right to sell it, (c) any express or implied conditions or warranties relating to description or quality, are hereby excluded. 8. Catalogue Descriptions

Descriptive statements contained in the advertisements or catalogues or made up by the Auctioneer or any member of his staff should be taken as matters of opinion only, and shall not be taken as statement of fact.

i) Items in the catalogue are sold as seen. Where possible significant damage is mentioned, but this does not include all faults and imperfections. The absence of such reference does not imply that the lot is in good condition or free from restoration or repair. Condition reports are available upon request ii) ’Inscribed’ or ‘Signed’ does not imply that the lot is wholly or partly by that maker 9. Forgeries

Notwithstanding Conditions 6 and 7, if the Auctioneer receives notice in writing from the Buyer WITHIN 7 DAYS OF THE SALE that in his opinion a lot is a forgery (as defined in Condition 12) and on giving such notification the lot in question is returned to the Auctioneer at his working premises in the same condition as when bought, then if on considering such evidence as the Buyer supplies to prove his assertion, the Auctioneer decides that the lot is a forgery the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price repaid to the Buyer. 10. Property in lots and risk

The Buyer shall not become the owner of any lot, and the Auctioneer shall have a lien thereon, until the Buyer has discharged the purchase price in full together with any other charges due, but after the fall of the hammer the risk of damage or loss shall nevertheless be the Buyer's. 11. The Premium

The Buyer shall pay to the Auctioneer a premium of 20% of the hammer price together with VAT on such premium. 12. Default by Buyer

If the Buyer fails to make payment in a way acceptable to the Auctioneer or to remove any lot or lots bought by him within 7 days of the auction or in any other material respect fail to comply with these conditions, the Auctioneer shall have the right, (a) to resell the lot or lots by public auction or otherwise without notice to the Buyer, and if any deficiency arises on such resale, after deducting the Auctioneer's full costs and expenses, the Buyer shall be responsible to the Auctioneer therefore (but any net surplus to be the Seller's) or, alternatively, (b) to store the lot at the Auctioneer's premises or elsewhere and to release the lot to the Buyer only after payment in full of the purchase price together with any other charges due. The Auctioneer reserves the right to charge storage of

17. Property sold with a * Symbol

These lots will be invoiced under the Auctioneer’s Margin Scheme. Gardiner Houlgate must bear VAT on the Buyer’s Premium and hence charge an amount in lieu of VAT at 20% on this Premium. This amount will form part of the Buyer’s Premium on our invoice and will not be separately identified VAT registered buyers from the EU should note that the import VAT charged on property released in the UK cannot be cancelled or refunded by Gardiner Houlgate VAT registered buyers from the UK should note that the invoice issued by Gardiner Houlgate for these items is not suitable evidence in respect of import VAT

VAT registered buyers from the EU countries may be able to seek repayment of the import VAT paid by applying to HM Revenue and Customs. On request, immediately after the sale, the office can either ask HM Revenue and Customs to generate a C79 certificate (for UK buyers), or obtain a copy of the import C88 (for other EU VAT registered buyers), which may be used to claim recovery of the VAT. Otherwise Gardiner Houlgate may re-invoice the lot and charge VAT at 20% on both the Hammer Price and the Premium and provide a tax invoice to the buyer 18. CITES Restrictions

As of 2 January 2017, new laws came into effect to control the import and export of all items made with rosewood. Any lots containing any amount of rosewood will therefore be subject to restrictions when exporting outside of the EU. It will be the buyer’s responsibility to make sure that the relevant paperwork is in place before shipping Some lots are sold with CITES article 10 certificates, allowing the commercial use of an item containing an endangered species. Lots subject to this are marked in the catalogue 19. Gemstones

Many gemstones have been treated in various ways to enhance their appearance. For example, sapphires and rubies are routinely heat treated and emerald treated with oils and resins. Some stones may require re-treating or oiling periodically. Enhancement affects market value and all Gardiner Houlgate estimates assume that gemstones may have been enhanced, in any case all lots are sold as seen and purchasers are deemed to have satisfied themselves as to condition and any possibly treatment of stones 20. Artists Resale Rights (or Droit de Suite)

On certain lots in the catalogue and which are sold for a hammer price of 1000 Euros or greater (converted into the currency of the sale using The Design and Artists Copyright Society threshold calculator on the date of the Sale) the Additional Premium will be the percentage of the amount of the Hammer Price calculated as follows: 0-50,000 Euros 50,000.01 to 200,000 200,000.01 to 350,000 350,000.01 to 500,000 Exceeding 500,000
