Christmas Cheer I t’s been a busy six weeks for the team of GTN’s Greatest Christmas Awards judges and we’re nearly there.

By Christmas Eve we will have visited and met over 130 garden centre Christmas teams and around 10,000 customers will have had their say as to who they think are The Greatest at Christmas 2025.

Our judging visits are such an uplifting experience, seeing great Christmas retailing and feeling the enthusiasm of the teams during their busiest weeks of the year has been so energising.

No wonder customers love shopping and dining at garden centres in the run up to Christmas.

Given the economic uncertainty as we went into

Christmas it has been interesting to hear that most centres are up considerably on Christmas trading this year and that it has been higher priced items that have flown out of the doors.

Now the judges have the task of reviewing all the photos taken and pooling their findings so that the winners can be chosen and then presented during Spring Fair on Monday 2nd February. This year’s Awards presentations will be in the Glee at Spring Fair area at 1:00pm, we look forward to seeing you there.

Powering retailer success in 2026 Building on 88 years’ experience, Handy continues to grow through simplifying garden machinery, advancing cordless innovation with the introduction of its Webb Eco range, and supporting retailers.

H

andy has been a name in the garden machinery sector since 1938 and today is one of the UK’s largest independent manufacturers, supplying specialist dealers, national retailers and garden centres with its own and other market brands.

A purpose-built 70,000ft Swindon site is now home to more than 45 full-time staff and it’s here that Handy has developed and expanded its own machinery brands including Webb, The Handy and Q Garden. And, as the UK-appointed distributor for the Greenworks brand of cordless equipment, it is at the forefront of leading battery technology.

A family-owned British business, Handy, as it is today, started life in 1970’s when Derek Belcher, a long-standing employee of GJ Handy, purchased the business. The relocation to Hobley, Swindon, placed the company next

to a garden centre, creating opportunities to support other garden retailers.

By the early 2000s, Handy was supplying major national retailers with its own brands and expanding its range by developing new products and sourcing bulk production from the Far East. Today, Derek’s son Simon Belcher serves as Chairman, with Steve Bartlett as Managing Director and Mark Moseley as Sales and Marketing Director, leading the senior team from Handy’s impressive Dorcan headquarters and warehouse.

“We’ll take care of everything,” says Mark Moseley, Sales and Marketing Director about the role of Handy as a trade partner and category captain. “If you want Webb, The Handy or Flymo or Greenworks we’ve got the entire category you don’t need to worry.’

This commitment extends to spare parts,

with Handy holding extensive stock as part of its dedicated customer service offer. For major retailers with the required volume, Handy can also provide a freight-on-board service for ownlabel products through its Q Garden range.

Webb’s growth story When Mark first joined Handy in 2015, Webb accounted for around 6% share of Handy’s turnover with the Handy brand at 16%. Handy acquired the Webb brand in 2011, attracted to its reputation for British heritage and quality, reliability, practical performance and customer recognition. Mark could see investment in the company’s own brands, while still representing other brands, was the way forward.

“One of the biggest limitations of supplying retailers with products from brand partners is that you are in the hands of their strategies, so

sales can rise and fall depending on their plans,” explains Mark. Of all the brands Handy works with, Mark sees the greatest opportunity for garden centres in its own Webb range. Today, Webb is Handy’s leading brand, accounting for 55% of total revenue.

“In the early days it could be challenging to get the brand listed, but over time our ranges have gained real traction and Webb has grown,” says Mark. “We now find retailers asking for Webb first.”

This is only set to increase as new lines such as cordless machines under the Webb Eco banner launched this year, and the powerful Webb X-Series introduced next year, appeal to garden centre customers. Backed up by investments in marketing and retailer support, Mark believes Derek Belcher, founder of Handy, at the newly expanded site in Swindon.

The cordless transition Although petrol machines still account for a quarter of the company’s turnover, there is a definite shift towards cordless power. “The petrol market has actually been fairly static,” says Mark, “but where customers are buying petrol machines has changed dramatically. Most sales now are coming from online. It seems retailers don’t want to put as many petrol machines in their range because they are not seen as environmentally friendly.”

For the first time, Mark, Anthony and the team will be representing the Webb brand will be at the Garden Press Event in London in February, showcasing the latest Eco innovations and connecting directly with media and industry influencers. Sticky solutions driving growth at Pelsis Newport GTN visits the Pelsis Newport factory to explore the stickiest part of its product portfolio, including the popular Pest-Stop sticky traps.

M

ost garden retailers will be familiar with the Doff brand, but less so with its new owners, the Pelsis Group, who bought the company in 2024 to join their extensive range of sustainable pest control and public health products across global retail and professional sectors.

Doff, much respected for its best-selling plant protection and garden care products, and as the only UK manufacturer of slug pellets, is benefiting from an injection of investment and expertise from its new

parent — while retailers now have access to a host of new sales opportunities, including the well-known Pest-Stop brand, from the growing Pelsis portfolio across retail and commercial channels.

Although now active internationally, Pelsis is a UK-based company that originated from P&L Systems, founded in Knaresborough in 1984 by Peter Hicks when he bought the rights to the Insectaflash brand of electronic flykillers.

From there, the group has grown steadily, primarily through strategic

acquisitions, and is now recognised as a leader across its market sectors.

Its expertise spans a wide range of environmentally sound pest control and public health solutions, including yellow sticky insect traps for the retail market.

The Pelsis portfolio today includes Doff & Pest-Stop (and the renowned Little Nipper mouse traps), Agrisense (the Newport manufacturing site for pest monitoring and trapping, including pheromone-based controls), and B&G (for pest management professionals), to name just a few.

The Pest Stop Green Choice tulip shaped yellow traps for house plants has recently been re-designed with an integral stake in the same material to eliminate the previous metal stake – easier, economical and with improved packaging.

We caught up with the company at its factory in Monmouthshire, where Dawn Heptinstall Bolton, business development manager of the group’s Newport division (formally known as Agrisense), showed us around and outlined the group’s ambitious plans to forge new relationships in the garden retail sector.

Dawn explained that the Newport facility, relocated from Pontypridd in 2024, produces the glue boards used in Pelsis’ commercial insect light traps — the same units commonly found in garden centre restaurants, cafés, and commercial kitchens. These boards are then paired with the physical units manufactured at the group’s Dudley factory. “We make the glue boards here for the group, but we also manufacture bespoke boards for own label companies and other retail brands, so our production can cover commercial and consumables too,” Dawn told us.

The group is committed to sustainable practices and products, with plans underway to upgrade the energy-intensive sticky-trap machinery inherited from the company’s Silvandersson factory in

Each year, Pelsis produces: • more than 1 million cockroach traps • about 800,000 pot plant insect traps • around 5 million glue boards.

Sweden. “One of the key things about having a UK based manufacturing business is to be sustainable,” Dawn said, “so we need to make the machines more efficient and environmentally friendly.”

Materials that were previously sourced in Sweden are now sourced locally in the UK, reinforcing that key sustainability message and supporting British manufacturing. It is key for garden centres who are looking to stock a range of sustainable products, that they understand the sustainability processes like those Pelsis employ and all of the efforts that go into achieving that.

Also worth to note, the Newport site meets the highest ISO standards, and its materials are fully FSC certified.

Pheromome traps The production of pheromone insect traps is a specialist arm of the business, undertaken in closely-controlled laboratory conditions at the Newport factory.

They meet the needs of agricultural and horticultural customers across the globe who want to eliminate or drastically reduce the use of chemical sprays on their crops.

Each target insect requires is own specific dose of pheromone mixed with polymer and sealed in vials, packaged in a sachet.

The pheromones attract male insects, which are then captured in sticky traps.

Stella line up Five finalists are through to the last stage of the Westland Rising Stars programme with projects and ideas that have been bought to life on the shop floor.

W

ith the 2026 GCA Conference in their sights, the five finalists of this year’s Westland Rising Stars programme are tweaking projects and getting ready for their on-stage presentations. They were chosen from a Dragon’s Den style event at Bell Plantation in October, part of the programme which began in April, with a team of 10 taking part from garden centres across the country.

“Their projects demonstrated what a talented group of individuals they are,” says Gordon Emslie, Project Mentor. “They have all faced many challenges especially around managing time during a very busy season and have shown great determination in getting their project delivered when facing adversity. It has been a proud and humbling experience for me as their mentor to work with all this year’s candidates.”

This year’s cohort have chosen projects which resonate with many of today’s eco-conscious gardeners. From encouraging wildlife and bees into the garden using soft and hard landscaping, using café coffee grounds and water sustainability, their projects show that garden centres have the products and expert advice to make gardens environmental havens.

“The quality of this year’s Dragon’s Den presentations for Rising Stars was incredibly high, all five finalists delivered comprehensive, well-thought-out projects,” says Gina Lewis, Head of Content, Westland Horticulture. “We were especially impressed with the originality of some of the projects and are sure that when presented at conference, the audience will leave feeling inspired and thinking about how they could implement some of their ideas in their

own centres.”

The Rising Stars programme is a collaboration between the Garden Centre Association and sponsored by Westland Horticulture. It helps nurture potential retail stars of the future by supporting them to create shop floor marketing and promotions on themes they each feel strongly about.

At the GCA conference in January, finalists take to the stage to present their projects and delegates in the audience will get the chance to cast a vote to find the winner.

Lewis O’Neill BGC Gloucester Garden Centre Aaron Caffarelli Thetford Garden Centre • Circle of Life My project is a result of the number of houses being built around East Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. As more are built many habitats for plants and wildlife are being removed or destroyed. After having my 20sqm wildlife friendly garden display on show, sales of perennials, lavender and shrubs increased compared to last year. I created my own leaflets for customers to take home to they could understand why I made the garden in the first place and offer ideas of what plants to put where. I’m also planning a booklet to include a garden design and to show how much the plants cost, how big they grow and what position they prefer ie full sun or shade.

Char Sait Haskins Ferndown • Wildlife Gardening My project will encourage the implementation of wildlife gardening and highlight its importance especially in the declining populations. This will entail four seasons of gardening guidance to benefit a variety of different wildlife at crucial times of the year.

This project is inspired by marrying the benefits of gardening for ourselves as well as the environment and future of our wildlife in the most efficient and sustainable ways possible.

I will be basing this project around my creation of a wildlife calendar/planner that I hope will educate customers on the timing of wildlife needs throughout the year as well as inspire customers on the execution of providing for those needs within their own garden.

• Hanging About I created and sold a bundle within my store which allowed customers to create their own seasonally adjusted hanging basket. For spring/ summer the selection leant towards pollinators ensuring we are helping wildlife. For autumn/ winter, it focuses more on expanding colour and interest for any outdoor area. The example baskets I created allowed customers to see a finished product while the bundles give the joy of creating their own.

Through the Rising Stars project, I have learnt much about the industry and about myself. I have put myself in positions I wouldn’t have previously, like public speaking and presenting my own work. The project has resulted in more than 600 instagram views and been positive in engaging with customers.

Jess Salter BGC Gloucester Garden Centre • Cup to Compost My project aims to emphasis the benefits of recycling used coffee grounds - not just in the garden but also highlight different uses around the home. It was a great way to get the restaurant team engaged and gave them knowledge to pass onto customers. With the marketing department we designed bags and strong POS, bag stickers and informational leaflets I planted two hydrangeas to see if there were noticeable benefits to adding coffee grounds.

I was pleased to find the coffee-enhanced hydrangea bloomed quicker and had better water retention. I also discovered coffee grounds work well as a companion product alongside, but not replacing, common chemicals.

Louise Lockwood Planters Tamworth • Buzzing for a better tomorrow!

I wanted to do something that really made a difference — something that would help tackle the decline in bee numbers while inspiring the next generation to care about these incredible little pollinators. I began by visiting local primary schools to talk to the children about why bees are so important and how they can help protect them. Together, we created bee-friendly spaces, and the children made some amazing beethemed artwork, which we displayed in store.

I’m most proud of my children’s booklet all about bees. The children loved using it, and teachers told me how much it helped bring the topic to life in the classroom. Seeing something I’d created used in such a positive way was a highlight of the whole project. Our Big Bee Weekend was another huge success. It brought the community together and helped boost sales of honey, plants, and other bee-friendly products.

I also had the opportunity to visit a local bee farmer and learn what it takes to become a beekeeper. Looking back, I’m proud of everything this project achieved. It wasn’t just about raising awareness — it was about connection: between people, nature, and the bees that keep our world thriving.

PATS 2025 review

Pet show reaches new heights It was a record-breaking PATS 2025 with more visitors than ever at its new NEC Birmingham location.

W

ith attendance up 70% on last year, PATS 2025 – the Pet & Aquatics Trade Show – has celebrated its first show at NEC Birmingham with style.

Now under the new ownership of Raccoon Media Group, show highlights included the New Product Showcase, the Aquatics Zone and live grooming demonstrations. Held at the end of September, it co-located with BETA International giving visitors the chance to experience both events and adding significant value to attendees and exhibitors.

Building on the success of this

Growing together:

Why garden centres must lead the green transition Boyd J Douglas-Davies, Chair of the Environmental Horticulture Group.

G

arden centres, growers, and suppliers are more than individual businesses — they are custodians of Britain’s green future. At a recent gathering in the House of Lords of industry and Parliamentarians, I argued that our sector is uniquely positioned to drive sustainability, nurture biodiversity, and inspire communities. Now, I want to bring that message directly to you: the businesses at the heart of Environmental Horticulture. The choices we make today will determine whether our industry thrives in a changing climate or struggles to adapt.

We are unique in being the only industry that should be encouraged to make a bigger environmental impact. Our work does not degrade the world we live in — it improves it.

Cleaner air, greener spaces, biodiversity, and wellbeing: horticulture is a force for good.

The opportunity before us Government policy is increasingly aligned with environmental responsibility. Incentives for sustainable practices, investment in green infrastructure, and public demand for ecofriendly products are converging.

Garden centres are not passive observers — we are active participants. By embracing environmentally friendly composts, reducing plastic packaging, and sourcing responsibly, we can set the standard for retail sustainability.

Consumers are looking for leadership.

They want to know that when they buy plants, tools, or garden furniture, they are supporting businesses that care about the planet. This is not just about compliance; it is about competitive advantage. Those who adapt early will win loyalty, while those who resist risk being left behind.

The horticulture sector has always been resilient, but resilience today means

Parliament can legislate, but only industry can deliver. innovation. It means recognising that sustainability is not a burden but a growth strategy. Every ecofriendly product line, every energy efficient greenhouse, every educational campaign is an investment in the longterm health of our businesses and our environment.

Partnerships across the supply chain That innovation cannot happen in isolation.

Growers and suppliers are the backbone of our industry, and collaboration is essential.

When growers pioneer water efficient systems or pest resistant varieties, garden centres must showcase these advances.

When suppliers develop recycled ecofriendly pots or energyefficient equipment, retailers must champion them.

This is a call for unity. Parliament can legislate, but only industry can deliver. By working together, we can create a virtuous cycle: demand for sustainable products drives innovation, innovation drives sales, and sales strengthen our sector’s resilience.

Imagine the impact if every supplier committed to reducing carbon emissions, every grower adopted regenerative practices, and every garden centre promoted these efforts to customers. The ripple effect would extend far beyond our industry, influencing consumer behaviour, shaping national policy, and reinforcing horticulture’s role as a leader in the green transition.

The role of garden centres in communities Our responsibility does not end at the

supply chain. Garden centres are more than shops; they are hubs of inspiration. Every display, workshop, and conversation is an opportunity to educate customers about sustainable gardening. Imagine the impact if every centre promoted pollinator-friendly plants, rainwater harvesting kits, and organic soil care. We would not only boost sales but also empower households to contribute to national environmental goals.

Customers trust teams in garden centres as sources of expertise, far more than they will ever trust the internet. When we recommend a particular compost, plant food or wildlifefriendly plants, they listen. When we demonstrate sustainable practices, they follow. This influence is powerful — and it carries responsibility. By positioning ourselves as champions of sustainability, we can shape consumer habits for generations to come.

A call to action The message I delivered in Parliament was clear: horticulture is not peripheral to the green transition — it is central. Garden centres, growers, and suppliers must seize this moment. By leading with sustainability, we safeguard our businesses, strengthen our communities, and secure our legacy as stewards of Britain’s gardens.

The future is ours to grow. Let’s make it greener, together.

Award winners and attention seekers A round up of what’s new in the world of plant sales.

uch was the quality of entries into the Plant, Seeds & Bulbs category of Glee’s New Product Awards, that judges found it impossible to give the prize to just one entry. In the end Euphorbia x martini Walberton’s Little Treasure WALEULITR from Farplants and Salvia Melba Magic ‘Strawberry Melba’ from Darby Nursery Stock shared the award and will both be excellent additions to planteria benches.

The euphorbia is tidy and compact so perfect for smaller gardens and large containers. It’s bright foliage changes colour through the year moving from green to yellow and red and the name Walberton’s Little Treasure lends itself nicely to imaginative planteria displays.

s working weeks go, this one has been action-packed, full of thoughtful discussion with member businesses and lots of travelling! That’s because at the time of writing this, I have just finished my latest visit to Scotland for a Business Improvement Scheme (BIS) event. As well as being the President of the HTA, I also chair some of the regional BIS groups that run four times a year, up and down the country. The BIS is aimed at small to medium-sized independent retailers, who come together and share knowledge, feedback, support and business development opportunities.

Our latest host was Kirktown Garden Centre in Stonehaven, a lovely friendly garden centre with a fabulous restaurant and big ambitions. Like all businesses across the country, those in Scotland face many challenges: Rising costs, inflation and pricing and staffing challenges.

But it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. The BIS events generate plenty of open and honest discussions and Scottish members tell me they find the group a hugely helpful resource, not just the financial benchmarking but as a sounding board for new ideas or processes and a safe, non-judgmental place to talk about the issues facing their businesses.

Sharing ideas Some of the topics we might cover are how to diversify or grow your business. For example, if one member wants to include a soft play area in their garden centre, they will be able to get help and advice from other members who have already gone through it, learning valuable lessons. Another example might be where a garden centre wants to move from a 30-seater café to a 120-cover restaurant. Where to start? Well, in the BIS meetings, there is always a wealth of knowledge and experience to draw from.

One of the discussions we had recently was around how much information (good or bad) managers should share with their employees. There is a range of opinions on this, but I believe having an open and honest management team leads to an open and honest organisation. If you give people the opportunity to care, more often than not, they will care. A good manager will want his or her staff to feel respected and part of the organisation.

Can you imagine this happening in any other sector or industry? Sharing knowledge and best practice in an informal but structured way, being supportive of ‘competing’ businesses and even helping each other out with ideas… certainly something you wouldn’t see in the banking world or read about in the media.

I first joined the BIS in 2002/2003 when I was running Armitage Garden Centres, and I found the interaction invaluable. Being able to network with like-minded people and ask for advice and recommendations was priceless and a huge help in my career. I learnt very early on about the importance of benchmarking in business and setting goals and KPI’s – something which I was able to do by communicating and sharing information with similar business managers. I never thought that one day, I would be chairing my own groups.

I have a theory about this. Essentially, I believe we are all gardeners. By that I mean we all enjoy sharing things, whether it’s seeds, cuttings, plants, advice, or knowledge.

Our industry is built on that, and I think everyone and everything in horticulture benefits from sharing. Without sharing and caring, our wonderful industry will not be able to continually adapt and grow.

We all know how tricky it is for businesses in this current climate. With the budget announcement due on 26th November, we are all waiting to hear how this will impact the garden retail sector and horticulture industry as a whole. At the time of writing, the HTA Policy and Public Affairs team has been working hard to make it clear to the Government that urgent action is needed to ease pressure on our member businesses.

Some of the HTA key asks include: • Halt further rises in employer taxes.

• Pause and consult on changes to Agricultural Property Relief (APR) and Business Property Relief (BPR).

• Reform business rates, including fair treatment for Garden Centres.

• Back the industry-led transition to peatfree growing with a clear roadmap, timelines, and funding for R&D. • Recognise horticulture, landscaping and arboriculture roles in official green jobs definitions, and expand funding for skills and apprenticeships.

2025: A year of growth, grit and gardening joy

can hardly believe I’m once again writing a review of the year – it truly has passed in the blink of an eye. Yet 2025, which began with understandable nervousness as we faced the threat of rising costs across the supply chain, including the dreaded National Insurance bomb, has ultimately proved to be a year characterised by positivity and growth.

Most significantly, the weather finally answered our hopes, delivering a prolonged gardening season that enabled the category to flourish. While some big-ticket items felt the pressure as consumers tightened their belts, the broader gardening market remained consistently strong. Whether shoppers were enhancing their homes or seeking the health and wellbeing benefits that gardening so naturally provides, the appeal of our sector proved as broad as ever. Gardening continues to mean many different things to many different people, and that diversity of motivation is one of our greatest strengths.

This year also brought a notable shift in the retail landscape. We said a final goodbye to Homebase, and also witnessed several of the larger garden centre chains expand as they absorbed smaller sites that might otherwise have closed permanently. Yet it was the evolution of online marketplaces that sparked the most conversation. These platforms reshaped how many sectors connect with consumers, creating new pathways for discovery, fulfilment and loyalty. Garden retail, however, has not embraced marketplaces to the same extent. Instead, many of us continue to champion the in-person, experiential style of retail that sits at the heart of our industry’s identity.

But while our sector’s physical roots remain strong, we cannot ignore the pace at which online channels evolve. Marketplace segmentation can happen quickly, and consumer appetite can shift just as fast. As a sector we must remain ready to respond, ensuring we don’t lose relevance as these digital ecosystems mature. The good news is that we have many associate members with the expertise to support any transition, and I strongly encourage those curious about the opportunities to reach out.

So, what does all of this mean for GIMA members as we look to the year ahead?

While strong trading periods, supported by favourable weather, have helped shield many from the full impact of rising costs, those pressures are not going away. Recent increases to the minimum wage, along with wider operational and material cost inflation, continue to affect the sector.

One issue now coming sharply into focus is the shifting burden of EPR. With responsibility moving more heavily towards the supplier, some members are facing significantly higher costs than initially forecast. This will have major repercussions across margins and pricing, and its effects will be felt right through the year.

Unlike a run of good weather, there is no hiding from these structural changes. It paints a picture of progress, but not without challenge: one step forward, two steps back, yet still moving in the right direction. Despite the headwinds, our industry remains innovative, adaptable and committed to delivering products that meet the changing needs of gardeners.

To support this momentum, we have a packed schedule for 2026. Our programme will deliver targeted education, knowledge-sharing opportunities and the ever-popular Meet the Buyer events, all designed to help members navigate both short-term challenges and longterm growth. And that’s before we even touch on the networking, fundraising and celebratory events, including the Garden Press Event,

GIMA Day Conference, Charity Golf Day and, of course, the GIMA Awards.

As we close out the year, we’re proud of what GIMA and our members have achieved.

Despite the challenges, it has been a year of real progress, with membership now exceeding 230 businesses. Our collective voice is stronger than ever, and the value of collaboration, shared learning and industry leadership has been clear throughout. I must extend the biggest thank you to every member, partner and supporter for your contribution this year.

Your commitment continues to shape GIMA’s journey.

Finally, I can’t end without acknowledging that I will be departing GIMA in mid-2026 after 12 years at the helm. It has been an honour to be part of GIMA’s story, and I’m grateful for the trust and support shown along the way. But I’m not done yet! It’s business as usual, with a busy Q1 and a full programme of events as we continue to support our growing membership and ensure a smooth path forward. So, I’ll see you all on the other side of Christmas – rested, recharged and ready for more.
