Ho, ho, ho! What a year it’s been

A

s this issue of GTN goes to press not only are we basking in the wonderful warmth and excitement that is generated by Greatest Christmas Awards visits but also with the knowledge that 2021 has been a truly record-breaking year for sales of products and plants in garden centres. After the first week of December the GTN Bestsellers All Products volume sales index for the whole year was up by 28% on 2021, which is partly due to the weeks we were all closed during #Lockdown 1, but a staggering 17% up on 2019. Garden centres really have been the retailers of choice for many more people this year and the signs are that they will continue to visit and shop with us for years to come. That may not result in such huge growth during 2022 and 2023 but if we continue to deliver great customer satisfaction and help the new gardeners really enjoy their outside space then the increased sales levels should stay to benefit all.

Garden centre Christmas retailing, as seen by our team of judges visiting over 50 centres across the UK during the past few weeks, is of such a high standard it’s no surprise that sales records have been broken and Christmas events, where they have taken place, have been fully booked. We will be starting next year by publishing hundreds of photos from our Greatest Christmas Awards visits, so you’ll be able to see the high standards achieved for yourself. The winners will be announced on Monday 7th February at 5:00pm on the Stage at Spring Fair. We look forward to seeing you there. In the meantime, we have the very important task to complete the GTN Sustainability Directory, out soon, to help you with all your sustainability developments for next year. Happy New Year!
