RUNNERS GUIDE

Running Is not Canceled The past year has been stressful for all of us, and we’re so glad you’ve made the positive decision to set a goal for yourself and work for it! While we continue to be restricted by COVID-19, we strive to offer you as much fun on a running route as possible. This year’s event will be run differently than other years, as we work to keep our runners safe and still offer an in-person event.

A Road Apple Award Race Run our 1/2 marathon and the Bird-in-Hand 1/2 marathon in the same calendar year and you will be presented with the Road Apple Award. Running the virtual race will not qualify you for an award.

Pretzel City Sports, a highly respected, well-known local timing company, is our official timer. Your bib includes a “disposable” chip. The starting line and the finish line are within a short distance of each other, so the race finishes about 250 yards beyond where you start. Location: Garden Spot Village 433 S. Kinzer Avenue, New Holland, PA 17557 Telephone: 717.355.6000 1/2 Marathon & 10K Expo: In order to restrict large gatherings of people during the pandemic, we will not hold a Runner’s Expo this year. We’ll continue to use our large tent for registration so that people can social distance and get what they need to be prepared for a great race! Packet Pick-up: Friday, March 26 from 2-8pm When you turn onto the Garden Spot Village Campus Parking Attendants will direct you. The pre-race meal will be served “to go” in the same tent as the packet pick-up in Parking Lot 6. Packet Pick-up the day of the event: Starts at 6:30am. Parking Attendants will be available and can direct you to registration. Mens & Ladies changing tents are by the clothing/gear check. The back of your bib has a form for emergency contact information. We hope not to use it, however, as a safety precaution, please fill it out. Please pin your bib to the front of your shirt. DO NOT pin the tear-off tag to your shirt and do not remove the tag. The tag serves as a backup for chip timing and may be pulled off at the finish line. Bib colors match your race: GREEN 1/2 marathon YELLOW 10K If you switched from 1/2 marathon to 10K or vice versa after bib numbers were assigned, your bib will have a piece of tape on it representing the color of the race you are running. Please do not remove it. It serves as a signal to our volunteers at the finish line so that you get the proper medal. - 4 -

WAVE START THIS YEAR: In order to limit the amount of people in the starting corral at one time, we will be dismissing groups of runners at a time. Our 10K runners will be dismissed first at 8am. At 8:15am we’ll start our half marathoners. Please put yourself in the wave that correlates with your expected finish time.

Our farming neighbors are also very gracious. They have allowed us to set up water stations and porta potties in their fields and on their property. Please be respectful of their property. SAG vehicles will be continually monitoring the course. They will have cell phones and radios if you need assistance. They will also be picking up clothing and other items you may discard along the way. Anything we pick up is held at clothing check until after the race, and you are welcome to look for your discarded items.

There are no road closures this year. PLEASE RUN TOWARD TRAFFIC, KEEPING TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. Traffic cones will line the course on the left side of the road every 1/10 of a mile. Course markings (arrows) are painted white at turns, and there will also be a cone with a directional sign. Where the course If you have a GREEN (1/2 marathon) bib, DO NOT overlaps, cones will be on both make a U-turn at mile 3.1. sides of the road. WATER STATIONS Water Stop Distances (in miles) Start—2—2—2—3—2—2—Finish Water Stop #1 is at mile 2. Water Stop #2 is at mile 4. Water Stop #3 is at mile 6. The next Water Stop circles back to Water Stop #2 and it is about 3 miles. Please plan accordingly. The final Water Stop is back to Water Stop #1 and it is 2 miles from Water Stop #2. As you approach the water stations... MASK UP. Tables will be stocked with cups of water and Gatorade, bananas and individually-wrapped pretzel snacks. These items are self-serve to prevent contact with the volunteers. Minor first-aid supplies like Band-Aids and Vaseline are available. Water Station Partners:

AWARD CEREMONIES Because of the restrictions on large group gatherings due to COVID-19, we will not be hosting a traditional awards ceremony after the race. Overall awards and age-group awards will be mailed to the finisher in the weeks following the race.

Accomplishment Alley Runners crossing the finish line will proceed down Accomplishment Alley, which is a runner-only chute in which you can get your medal from the Finisher’s Wall, Mylar blanket if needed, a commemorative mask, water, and first aid. We ask you put on the mask as soon as you are able after crossing the finish line, and definitely before approaching the food area. Runners will be treated to a bag of recovery food they can grab and go-and don’t forget the house-made ice creamRecovery Rocky Road! - 6 -

Finish Line When you cross the finish line, your timing chip is automatically read and your time recorded. The tag on the front of your bib may be pulled as a backup. Please be sure that your bib is fully exposed as you cross the finish line. If it is covered in any way, e.g. under a jacket or pinned to a pant leg and a shirt is tied around your waist covering it, it may not be read properly and your time may not be recorded. Please be sure your bib is clearly visible. We switch to manual timing at 12pm but the finish line remains open until 1pm. Your bib tag will be scanned and removed. Your official time will be sent to Pretzel City Sports after the event. It may take a couple of days for your time to be posted online, especially if you finish after 12pm. There will be water and food available until 1pm.

Medical Tent, Ambulance & Emergency Fees As the waiver you signed indicates, we expect that you have trained for the race and that you are healthy. There is a medical tent. We hope you don’t need it, but if you do, please ask one of the volunteers in the chute for help and they will get you to the tent. Once there, your condition will be assessed and help provided. There is no charge for a visit to the medical tent. If in the unfortunate circumstance you need to go to the hospital there will be an ambulance onsite. If you use the ambulance, there is an ambulance fee that you are responsible for and either you or your insurance company will be billed. You will be asked which hospital you wish to visit. WellSpan, in Ephrata, is supporting the event and is closest. Alternatives are Lancaster General and Reading Hospitals.

Shirt, Medal & Sunglasses

Based on feedback from you, our runners, we designed a cotton t-shirt for this year’s race. If you registered before March 1, 2021, we ordered the shirt size you specified and you can pick it up before the race when you get your bib. Please take the size shirt that you ordered. We cannot exchange sizes before the race. If you registered on or after March 1, 2021, you can pick up your shirt after you finish. Shirts are on a first come, first serve basis. We ordered extra shirts and there should be plenty. We ask for your understanding if your shirt size is not available; we had to use guesswork when we placed the order. You will be presented with your finishers medal in the chute when you cross the finish line. There are plenty of medals. Please make sure you have the correct medal before you leave the campus. - 14 -

Volunteers Our volunteers are invaluable and provide incredible service to our runners! It’s a long day, so they help us by working in shifts. We monitor the course and close the water stations as our final runner passes them. There will be water and food but there may or may not be volunteers at the water stations as time passes. We have wonderful volunteers! Please be courteous and thank them for their service. As runners, we all know there wouldn’t be events like this without the volunteers.
