Серед основних викликів реструктуризації галузі є ставлення місцевих до промислового спадку (зазвичай вони не вважають його цінним), великі масштаби шахт та забрудненість ґрунтів. Марта Хмєлевска з департаменту економічної географії університету Силезії в Польщі вважає, що ставлення місцевих до промислового спадку є основним фактором. Сьогодні дуже важливо поглянути на історію регіону та шахт по-новому, як на щось цінне, не лише з погляду видобування вугілля. Більш конкретну ідею для цього нам знову подав місцевий краєзнавець та вчитель історії Олександр Петренко. Побачивши його краєзнавчий музей, який зараз розміщено у школі №7, та долучившись до його неформальної палеоботанічної експедиції на терикон шахти «Добропільська», ми зрозуміли,
