We are less than one month away from an onslaught of advertising touting the latest and greatest weight loss shake, pill or meal plan. We’ll get on board with a new routine, hopeful that this New Year will be different.

And ultimately, if we’re one of the reported 24 percent of Americans who make resolutions and fail each year (according to www.statisticbrain.com/new-years-resolution-statistics/), our hope for change in January becomes a stretchy band and DVD collection collecting dust by June.

Enter Colleen Ducke, 48, a Green Bay woman who made her plan to get fit and live a better life stick—to the tune of losing more than 180 pounds. For Ducke, the child life supervisor at HSHS St. Vincent’s Children Hospital, her experience was one many can relate to.

“I was one of those people who tried everything—literally everything—short of surgery,” she explains. “The different diets would work for me for a while and I lost weight, and then I think I just wasn’t living my life on purpose. I just did what everyone else did—you get up in the morning, eat, go to work, eat, come home, eat, watch TV and go to bed. I was comfortable being comfortable.

Big picture wise, it all happens because I’m motivated about my life.

It happens because I go to the gym. It happens because I surround myself with people who keep me accountable, who are excited about life, who may need motivation, who I don’t want to let down.

Where in the past, I lived comfortably in a small world, now my experiences are much broader.”

“It’s not that I disliked my life,” she adds. “I just wasn’t committed to

making a lifestyle change; it was just about what the scale said.”

In New Years of January 2012, Ducke and a few coworkers challenged themselves through a weight-loss contest. Competitive in nature, Ducke’s weight loss topped 50 pounds in three months, which she admits was probably ill advised.

Soon after she was hospitalized with pancreatitis and gallstones.

After her recovery, coworker and good friend Ashley Thompson convinced Ducke to get back in the gym. She introduced her to ProFitness personal trainer Chrystal Zank, and her life transformation began to take hold.

“She pushed me and didn’t put up with my excuses,” explains Ducke.

“She calls my bluff every single time, and I need that.”

1. Find your people.

2. Change it up often. Don’t get rid of your routine, but spice it up.

3. Do what you love; find new ways to exercise.

If you hate doing something, try something else.

4. Log everything you put in your mouth. Be accountable for it and write it down.

5. The scale is just a tool. The number does not define who you are. Stop focusing on the number and start focusing on your life.

Ducke’s partner in crime, Chrystal Zank, adds her best tips.

1. It’s not a diet; it’s a lifestyle change. When you have a lifestyle change and have a bad weekend, you don’t fall off completely. You get back to work on Monday.

2. Talk through the failures right when they happen; admit the mistakes and move on.

3. Have a network of people to rely on, both for the triumphs and the low moments.

4. Not all fitness is right for everyone; some people like Zumba, where as others like body building.

Find activities that feel good to you and that you are confident in.

Ducke’s decision to be held accountable and to be committed, both through exercise and improved eating, was the game changer, says Zank. Even several years later, Ducke continues to journal her food decisions, turning them into Zank each week.

Zank says that other gym members see Ducke as a quiet leader; she takes others under her wing and helps them find the confidence to push forward.

“As her journey continues, you can see she has changed and she’s helping change others,” adds Zank. “She’s inspiring to other people in the gym.”

Ducke has kept her journey a public affair, tracking progress with friends and coworkers, inviting people to workout with her along the way and sharing her struggles and achievements with others on social media and within a group she started at ProFitness.

Eschewing her former “I can’t do that” attitude, Ducke invited friends to join her during the different legs of an Ironman triathlon she designed herself, finishing with the Cellcom Half Marathon as the finale to her homegrown effort.

“It was one of the most amazing experiences,” she says with emotion, “because everybody did it with me. I didn’t care about the Ironman; I didn’t care about the distance. I cared because everybody I cared about did what they could do to be part of it. It wasn’t about the destination—it was about the people.”

It’s because of those people that Ducke’s journey has come full circle. Within the last few years,

she became a life coach and strives to be someone others can look up to, and to lean on, as they begin their own paths toward healthy living.

Philanthropy Provides Huge Benefits in Greater Green Bay STORY BY MEGHAN DIEMEL | PHOTOS BY SHAUNAE TESKE

R

ay and Joan Kroc, philanthropists and founders of McDonald’s restaurants, made a unique charitable gift to the greater Green Bay area that has provided health and wellness opportunities to the community since August 2011.

Now more than five years later, The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center on Lime Kiln Road offers Green Bay and the surrounding region a variety of health and wellness, spirituality and arts programs for individuals of all ages.

A similar center came to fruition in San Diego in 2002 under the direction of Joan Kroc after Ray passed away. In light of its success, Joan endowed The Salvation Army with the single largest gift to a nonprofit at that time, totaling $1.5 billion. Green Bay’s $24 million dollar center

became possible through a combined capital and endowment grant from Kroc’s bequest, in addition to funds raised in the community.

According to Major Lisa Mueller, senior Kroc Center officer, Green Bay’s Kroc Center has become a place for families to relax and play in the aquatics center, to learn and grow through participation in the center’s day camp and after-school programand to develop skills and talents in the center’s creative and performing arts studios.

family,” she furthers. “For women working on their own health and wellness, our state-of-the-art fitness center and many classes offer them a safe, protected environment in which to transform their lives.

As a key part and complement to the mission of The Salvation Army, the center’s approach is a holistic and comprehensive definition of wellness that includes body, mind and spirit, explains Major Mueller. When Liz Sternig and her family installed an infrared sauna in their De Pere home, they also decided to add a small basement workout space, complete with cushioned floors, mirrored walls and a television that can stream workout music or YouTube videos, says Sternig, a part-time instructor at both Jenstar Yoga & Fitness and Western Racquet & Fitness Club, Green Bay.

Jen Berres, owner of Jenstar in De Pere, says her ideal inhome yoga space “should be filled with creativity and love” and at least one clear wall. “That will allow you to do fun poses such as headstands and handstands” or the restorative pose of putting legs up the wall.

A workout or yoga space should be designed to get you to move, Berres says. And everything from the paint color and décor to the temperature should help you with—and not distract you from—that goal.

• Remember to hydrate! In Sternig’s basement, bottles of water are just as much of a priority as towels and hand weights.

A window-filled room is Cunningham’s happy place, she says.

“I love a lot of natural light.”

She adds that when it comes to color, “Blues are very calming to me,” which is why she chose to decorate with a blue, green and beige rug.

• A mirrored wall in your workout space can help you keep your form in check, Sternig adds.

Simple and serene is a traditional theme for a yoga space, Berres agrees. “I probably wouldn’t do a hot pink yoga room.”

But then again, “I think everyone should rock their vibe.” For Sternig’s workout space, that vibe includes a black ceiling. “We wanted something more edgy,” she says. “It gives it a more urban look.”

• Busy wall patterns can inspire energy and movement. But for yoga practice, specifically balance poses, simple wall art is generally preferable, Berres says.

FINAL TOUCHES “I’m a big fan of props,” says Berres. Cunningham agrees that no yoga space is complete without a mat, two yoga blocks and a yoga strap. She also recommends a meditation cushion or bolster, and an inspiring element or two. “I have this jade plant that I just love,” she says.

Berres adds that some yoga practitioners choose to fill an entire table with objects of inspiration—including pictures of loved ones, meditation or mala beads, fresh flowers and favorite or motivational books. But she cautions not to get carried away. “It is meant to be a space to clear your mind.”

• Some yoga practitioners incorporate essential oils into their practice, Berres adds. Soothing scents such as lavender are restorative and calming; brighter scents (sweet orange, peppermint, etc.) can lend energy and invigorate your workout.

• The same is true for music: Instrumentals or sounds of nature can lead to a calming, rejuvenating yoga practice. But anything goes – Berres will sometimes put on hip hop music, and Cunningham says she’s done yoga to Mumford & Sons.

Winter in the Midwest: cold, dry, harsh...

So a few important things to remember.

1: Hydration. My favorite products {for ALL skin types} are these four products from With Love {handmade}. Oils work fluidly with our skin to maintain hydration, regulate oils and protect the skin (from flakes, redness, irritation).

2: Embracing the Midwest pale. Owning our skin tone, protecting it and loving it. This means, PUT THE BRONZER AWAY!! Embrace the tone of your skin, enhance it with a light dusting of blush or even highlighter

to get a beautiful glow. Most importantly, find the correct foundation color. In Wisconsin, we have 4 very different (and often harsh) seasons which means our skin tones change drastically. dry, winter months it’s very important when getting your skin to ‘glow’. We also skipped the bronzer and opted for a warmer blush to enhance her lip color, but just gave her face a beautiful, natural look.

3: Less is more, it doesn’t matter the season. However during the winter months our skin has a lot of external battling going on (dry air, cold/snowy weather, chapped/ redness, etc), so using minimal products with maximum benefits will make the biggest impact. Such as Oils for protection and hydration vs a large array of creams/lotions.

Even simplifying your makeup routine- finding that perfect red lip makes a big impact with just a touch of mascara! We have enough going on from the weather to holiday parties and family get-togethers to be adding to the stresses of our skin. “Work smarter, not harder” as my friend and Mint Salon owner Caroline Quinn always says, which is true in so many aspects of our life! Red is always trending when it comes to fall, winter and the holidays! Everyone can wear a red lip color, it’s about finding the right shade, intensity and having the confidence to wear it! Even the slightest undertone can make a difference when choosing the ‘right’ red, some can be more Cherry Red and others more Orange. Being able to stop in and try the lipcolors on will be the biggest help, vs blindly picking shades we are drawn to at the drug store. You can try on these great shades from Au Naturale locally at Weiler Academy or Mint Salon.

EYES The ‘Smokey Eye’ never goes off trend, especially around the holidays. This is definitely a top look for parties. This year, there has been a trending new take on this classic look, adding an ‘ombre’ and even color to the traditional Smokey Eye has taken this look to a whole new level! On Paige, I used the Au Naturale shadow pigments in Flaming Ginger and Dark Opal to create that ‘ombre’ appearance. With blending out the black liner and adding a bit of liquid liner, it really creates a sultry look... plus the vibrant red hue really makes her green eyes WOW! I also used the Au Natural cream concealer under the eyes to create a bright a flawless complexion and With Love {handmade) Complexion Mist over the top which leaves a glowing radiance.
