ON THE COVER: The sun had warmed the top soil enough for a worm to find its way to the surface and this robin to pluck it from the soggy earth in this photograph taken late March near The Lodge at Leathem Smith in Sturgeon Bay. The vast majority of robins do move south in the winter, however, some stick around in northern locations according to Journey North. Robins migrate more in response to food than to temperature and fruit is the robin’s winter food source. As the ground thaws in the spring, they switch to earthworms and insects. Most will sing when they arrive on their breeding territories.
