NOVRIDA ‘OPRID’ PRATIWI

rest well, Oprid. you and your works will always be in our hearts

(1992 - 2018)

Ganara Art Gallery is pleased to present ‘CIRCLE SOCIETY,’ the first solo exhibition of young illustrator Novrida ‘Oprid’ Pratiwi in Jakarta. Originating from Malang, East Java, Oprid has been developing inventive responses to contemporary women in urban culture traversing multiple media. Each work is woven into the larger cultural fabric of young generation and reflects the cornerstones of young women in Indonesia’s progressing social environment. This exhibition highlights a new work by Oprid in a form of mural spanning half of the gallery’s area. She shapes and creates artworks based on her growing concern about young women’s reaction and psychology and relating it to today’s society. “Judul Mural Write Here” is defined as a mixture of surveying a subject, in this case, young women, in our contemporary landscape. The vibrant colors in Oprid’s works bring an exploration of how each story unfolds with an airy and pleasant moment whilst holding another commentary on the story being told. The works subtly reveal the phenomenon of daily reality and are about taking on specific situations in such a way that this phenomenon is seen. Oprid observes the flux surrounding the relationship between reality and the imaginary situation created by the pleasantries of her illustration. The works are artifacts of various realities and are a quest focusing on one’s experience to sort the two-sided realities. Oprid presents her result in psychological observance in social acceptance in community, such as beauty standard and the increase of high lifestyle to get the desire of approval satiated. It is an exploration of the notion of peer pressure through artistic practices and reflections on reality by enhancing her thoughts in visual terms. Overall, Oprid tries to find the space where people stand between the reality perceived by her self-observance and substantially questioning the two sides of identity shown by women in society.

Documentations are everything, but could we chill? by Dessy Rachma W

Being part of the millennial generation where everything is visible has become a challenging life to fight for. Those who lost the fight against themselves will get triggered easily to nonsensical comments. However, those who know this concept in a wider perspective most likely would stay chill and go along like what Oprid does. We found lots of different behaviors between youngsters in Jakarta and Yogyakarta, where I and Oprid constantly joke about it. There are quite a number of ‘hangouts’ cafes in Jakarta where millennials often use to work in or simply just ‘hanging out’. We don’t see this behavior quite often back in Yogya. Additionally, the spending gap between this two cities is quite stark. For those millennials such as me and Oprid, will quip on how we have more important things to take care of rather than having a coffee break in high-end places. There is also a shifting change in how millennial nowadays treat photography. Photography has been a recording medium for ages and provides learning material for people to learn and do better things. Unfortunately, community nowadays takes photography as a medium for sharing things that they have done with solely different purpose: to brag haughtily and to prove themselves they are the first and center of attention. Such example can be found when one of your friends share his or her journey in a new place and say, “I’ve visited this superb place! Have you? No? It is a shame you have not yet to go there.”

Oprid creates a scene in her work that made us stay realizing and knowing that this kind of millennial urban culture attack has to be faced in a chill and fun way. Her illustrations on walls act in such a way like big screen mirror while stating the fact that, “We have to enjoy being in this part.” “And that’s okay!” Oprid said. Oprid’s exploration is based on her own daily experience about her diversity among millennial issues. Her engagement in capturing the millennial habit is not in critical ways but more often showing the ways of how to chill and enjoy the phenomenon in a fun way although some of it are unpleasant. Oprid’s straightforward lines create a to-the-point statement and form in her work. Her authenticity and honest satirical humor show through the crude acts of fashionable ladies in their own social circle. We could easily spot the fashionable girls in 5 seconds in a raw and playful atmosphere. It is a Happy Magic! The works may look playful and humorous, yet it subtly shades how the city girls in the millennial era act. This exhibition is a way she gains insight to understand this phenomenon as much as she can while poking fun at how weird we actually are. So, shall we chill?
