THE GAMM THEATRE

SEASON 35 2019-2020

EXPERIENCE THEATER THATTHAT MOVES YOU,YOU, ENGAGES YOU, YOU, EXPERIENCE THEATER MOVES ENGAGES AND YOUR PERSPECTIVE. ANDCHANGES CHANGES YOUR PERSPECTIVE. This season marks our 35th year of powerful stories told by familiar friends and new collaborators in an intimate setting. It is also a thrilling season of Gamm firsts! Our first slate of works entirely by American authors includes four of the country’s most compelling new plays—all making their Rhode Island premieres—anchored by our first musical. All startlingly original, these epic and mini-masterpieces look at particularly American dreams and delusions, asking where we are and how we got here. We will also be staging our first holiday show in The Gamm’s Warwick home. Subscribe to enjoy the quality and variety of this extraordinary season at the very best value. It’s your guaranteed date to share rich, relevant stories with your family and friends . . . and make memories to last a lifetime. I look forward to seeing you at the theater,

A DOLL’S HOUSE, PART 2

AN OCTOROON BY BRANDEN JACOBS-JENKINS

BY LUCAS HNATH

SEP - OCT 2019 It’s been 15 years since Norwegian house wife Nora Helmer slammed the door on her husband, three children, and the rest of married life in Ibsen’s sober 19th-century drama. Now she’s back in Hnath’s darkly comic Broadway darling. In her new life as an incendiary feminist writer, Nora is being blackmailed by a judge and needs her estranged husband’s help. But her family has a few grievances they want to air first. With razor-sharp dialogue, A Doll’s House, Part 2 imagines the aftermath of Nora’s infamous exit, provoking questions about marriage, gender inequality, and the meaning of liberation in often hilarious and insightful ways.

OCT - NOV 2019 Judge Peyton is dead and his plantation, Terrebonne, is in financial ruins. Peyton’s handsome nephew George arrives as heir apparent and quickly falls in love with Zoe, a beautiful, one-eighth black “octoroon.” But the evil overseer, M’Closky, has other plans for both Terrebonne and Zoe. From the author of Gloria (Gamm 2018) and Appropriate, this raucous, irreverent retelling of a hit 19thcentury melodrama is “this decade’s most eloquent statement on race in America today.” (The New York Times) WINNER OF THE OBIE AWARD FOR BEST NEW AMERICAN PLAY

It’s bold, fearless playwriting: laughing in the face of racism . . . allowing the horror of history to spell itself out.

A triumph! Smart, funny and utterly engrossing.

TIME OUT (LONDON)

THE NEW YORK TIMES

Bizarrely brilliant. An extraordinary play that defies categorisation.

A brisk and brainy sequel. THE GUARDIAN

THE GUARDIAN

[An Octoroon] insists that making theater can be the best way to talk back to history. THE VILLAGE VOICE

ASSASSINS

MUSIC AND LYRICS BY STEPHEN SONDHEIM BOOK BY JOHN WEIDMAN

JAN - FEB 2020 Sherri Rosen-Mason, head of the admissions department at a New England prep school, is intent on diversifying the student body. Alongside her husband, the school’s headmaster, she’s been largely successful. But when the couple’s only son sets his sights on an Ivy League university, progressive values and self-interest collide with shocking results. This biting comedy-drama by the author of Bad Jews and Significant Other explodes the ideals and contradictions of “liberal” white America. WINNER OF THE DRAMA DESK AND OUTER CRITICS CIRCLE AWARDS FOR BEST PLAY

Astonishing and daring. An extraordinarily useful and excruciating satire—of the left, by the left, for the left.

MAR 2020 Success is like failure, It’s how you perceive it, It’s what you do with it, not how you achieve it. – Leon Czolgosz to Emma Goldman in Assassins The nation’s most notoriously successful and would-be presidential assassins inspire each other to dreadful acts in this Tony Awardwinning sensation. From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, Sondheim’s revue-style exposé bends time and space to reveal the underbelly of the American Dream and the country’s culture of celebrity. Don’t miss this audacious and alarmingly funny experience from the master of the modern American musical (A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods). WINNER OF THE TONY AWARD FOR BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL

THE NEW YORK TIMES

The nuanced and competing truths . . . are like a first act that dares its spectators to create a second out of postshow conversations. TIME OUT (NEW YORK)

Dark, demented humor, as horrifying as it is hilarious. ASSOCIATED PRESS

Intelligent and thrilling musical theatre. Dazzling in its originality. THEATERWEEK

MARY JANE BY AMY HERZOG

APR - MAY 2020 From her apartment in Queens, Mary Jane navigates both the mundane and the unfathomable realities of caring for her chronically ill two-year-old son. Immersed in a world of medicines and feeding tubes, the unflinchingly optimistic single mom finds herself building a community of women from many walks of life. From the author of 4000 Miles (Pulitzer Prize finalist) and After the Revolution (Gamm 2012), Herzog’s beautifully unsentimental play is a tribute to a mother’s unconditional love and the power of empathy. WINNER OF THE NEW YORK DRAMA CRITICS’ CIRCLE AWARD FOR BEST PLAY

Truthful in the way that Thornton Wilder’s ‘Our Town’ is, and for similar reasons. Like Wilder, Herzog has made theatre that shines from her characters’ inner life first. THE NEW YORKER
