First Thought Talks | Middle East | Africa | Europe Daniel Trilling, author of Lights in the Distance: Exile and Refuge at the Borders of Europe, talks about the people trying to get into the promised land of Europe, and finding that they may not be wanted. He will be interviewed by artist Sarah Hickson.

Reem Karssli and Caroline Williams, creators of the award–winning theatre installation Now is the Time to Say Nothing, will talk about how the human stories behind the Syrian conflict inspired them to create a stunning piece of art. They will be interviewed by artist Sarah Hickson.

Direct Provision, Experience and Remedies

Members of the crew of the LÉ Samuel Beckett, one of the Irish naval vessels which undertakes rescue missions for migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, and the subject of the riveting RTÉ documentary, The Crossing, will talk about their experiences saving lives in the ocean. Moderator: Judy Murphy, Connacht Tribune.

Pulitizer Prize nominee Dael Olandersmith, writer, performer and theatre maker, will discuss the experiences and ideas which inform much–praised works like Forever, Beauty’s Daughter and Yellowman. She will be interviewed by Professor Patrick Lonergan, Professor of Drama and Theatre Studies, NUI Galway.

Donna Vuma, Bulelani Mfaco and Evgeny Shtorn will talk about their experiences of Direct Provision and what is wrong with the system. Anne Mulhall, activist in the Movement for Asylum Seekers in Ireland, will moderate.

In a compelling TV series for TG4, presenter Síle Nic Chonaonaigh explored four of the world’s most iconic walls and borders; the USA–Mexico border, the now demolished Berlin Wall, the Korean DMZ and the Israel– Palestine Separation Barrier. Síle and the team uncovered the human stories behind these walls. Síle is joined in conversation by international participants of the documentary who lives are affected by these borders.
