“Fifty!” yelled Mimi. “Sixty,” the man’s voice called again. “Seventy!” Mimi hollered back. She couldn’t see the man who was bidding against her. The auctioneer tried to entice others to participate. “Come on, folks,” he said. “Don’t let the bidding stay just between those two. Do I hear eighty? Eighty, eighty?” “Eighty!” shouted a man standing near the windows. “Go sit down!” someone in the room yelled, and everyone laughed. “Ninety dollars!” the man in the back countered. He was getting angry. The bidding was heating up, and that silly woman had no clue what she was bidding on. But he did, and was prepared to go as high as it took to get that box. “Oh dear,” Mimi said, looking at the kids. “That’s an awful lot of money.” “Come on, Mimi, don’t quit now!” Grant cheered. “Yeah, Mimi, buy that box!” Christina urged. 43
