THINGS TO BE THANKFUL FOR
I recently returned from Calgary, Canada for an international booking conference where I was joined by more than 500 of my industry colleagues to begin programming the 2023/24 season. What a joy to be back in the swing of things and spend time face to face with so many fellow presenters, agents, and artists from around the country, sharing our struggles and successes from the last year, and looking ahead to a more promising future.
There were so many moments during the week where I paused to reflect and be thankful for where we are today, both as an industry and as our Center, compared to just twelve months ago when there was still so much uncertainty.
As we enter into this season of Thanksgiving, we truly have much to be grateful for. The Center recently celebrated its 15th anniversary with a truly unforgettable gala evening starring Bernadette Peters and honoring the legacy of Marie Damrell Gallo. I’d like to extend a very special thank you to all those who supported this momentous event, making it our highest grossing fundraising gala to date! Your generosity ensures the continued success of the Center’s ongoing artistic programming, arts education, and community outreach initiatives.
We’re also extremely grateful to you—our patrons—for supporting the new season lineup in a big way! Several of our November performances including Three Dog Night (Nov. 2), Engelbert
Humperdinck (Nov. 6), Broadway’s mega-hit The Book of Mormon (Nov. 1516), and the highly-anticipated Gallo Center debut of Frankie Valli (Nov. 18) are either completely sold out or have limited ticket availability, and we have YOU to thank for that! As always, we encourage you to buy early, before all the best seats are gone.
November also brings with it the very best in holiday programming! Starting the week of Thanksgiving, we’ve got several ways you and yours can usher in the season. From the Vienna Boys Choir to A Carpenters Christmas, and from Mariachi Sol de Mexico to Lonestar’s country hits and seasonal favorites, there’s a bit of holiday magic for everyone. We look forward to being part of your festivities!

CATCHING UP WITH
EFFIE PASSERO THE TALENTED MODESTO-BORN PERFORMER IS ON TOUR WITH PMJ!
BY DOUG HOSNER DIRECTOR OF MARKETING GALLO CENTER FOR THE ARTS
While many people locally are familiar with the early musical recognition and accomplishments of Modestonative and singer-pianist Effie Passero, my first exposure to her incredible talent was in 2011, two years after moving here to become director of marketing at the Gallo Center. She was performing in the second annual Valley’s Got Talent program (the name was later changed to Valley Talent Project).
Effie won the grand prize, delivering a soaring, soulful vocal of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” accompanying herself on piano. It was an astounding, wholly original arrangement of her own, one that would soon be imitated by others, and I remember thinking then that she was destined for a long career in ‘the business.’
For the next six years Effie supported herself in various jobs while performing music gigs across northern California. By 2017, though, she was ready for a change.
“A friend of mine in Los Angeles, who was from Modesto, hooked me up with a job and I decided to take the chance,” says Passero. Along with the job, she also began performing in area clubs. “Within a month and half, I was discovered by some representatives for American Idol, and I was cast on the show in January 2018.”
Laughing, she remembers that time “as a whirlwind experience. No one moves to Los Angeles expecting anything like that. It was like a fairy tale, luck-of-the-draw thing.” Though she didn’t advance to that show’s season finals, she once again left judges, including Lionel Richie and Katy Perry, in awe.
Soon Passero started getting session work in L.A. recording studios. “I connected with a man named Tim Davis, one of the most prolific and successful music directors who casts for album background vocals, commercials, choirs and other gigs. Through him I got to sing back up on Barbra Streisand’s last album.”
Then she would meet jazz singer-songwriter Spencer Day, and they began performing together in Los Angeles.
“He’s an amazing person, very special,” Passero says. “Spencer has a lot of contacts in Mexico, and that’s how I came to be in Puerto Vallarta by 2020.” She arrived just as the COVID-19 pandemic hit. “We were sidelined for a while, but by 2021 we were singing again in clubs and restaurants. It was about then that I realized I wanted to stay, and I’ve been in Puerto Vallarta ever since.”
Soon other friends brought Passero to the attention of arranger and pianist Scott Bradlee, the founder of the rotating musical collective Postmodern Jukebox (PMJ), with whom she has been on tour for the past year. She was hired without having to audition. She also was asked to record a PMJ video singing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” which now has well over half a million views on Facebook.
Passero says working with PMJ is the highlight of the past five years.
“A lot of people think that being on television and having that exposure is the be all and end all,” she commented. “But I’m not chasing fame. Postmodern Jukebox has given me the opportunity to travel, and to work with such amazing musicians. We don’t compete with each other; we just love performing together.
On a recent break, stopping over in Modesto before resuming a tour that has taken the band through Europe and would then move on to Australia and New Zealand, the effervescent Passero was asked if she found touring to be the tough, exhausting grind people imagine it to be.
Nope.
“I personally enjoy the tour bus life. It’s fun. It’s like summer camp!”

IS A SINGULAR SINGING SENSATION
of six Latin Grammys and one Grammy Award, celebrated singer Lila Downs is one of the most powerful and unique voices performing today. A dramatic stage presence and her emotional storytelling through song help Downs' singing transcend language barriers. She is a passionate human rights activist, explaining why her lyrics often focus on social injustice and the suppressed Latin American stories of women of indigenous and working-class origins. Downs' influences range from the Folkloric and Ranchera music of Mexico to the music of the southern United States, crossing social barriers and generating sounds that also embrace Folk, Jazz, Indigena and Hip Hop.

BEHIND THE SCENES AT CATS
Gallo Center Center Circles members were treated to an exclusive behind-the-scenes presentation and Q&A prior to two performances of CATS on September 17. Following coffee and morning treats, the group learned more about the production from cast and crew, who had arrived in Modesto weeks before for extensive rehearsals and technical preparations using the Center’s state-of-theart facilities. Helping to launch a new North American tour for the iconic Broadway musical was a first for the Gallo Center.

Legendary band Three Dog Night claims some of the most astonishing statistics in popular music. In the years 1969 through 1974, no other group achieved more top 10 hits, moved more records or sold more concert tickets than they did. The hits weave through the fabric of pop culture today, whether on the radio where they are heard day in and day out, in TV commercials or in major motion pictures.
Songs like “Mama Told Me (Not To Come),”
“Joy to the World,” “Black and White,” “Shambala” and “One” serve to heighten our emotions and crystallize Three Dog Night's continuing popularity.

The spirit and sound of Altan comes from the deep and rich musical tradition of their native County Donegal. On one of his many visits to the Donegal Gaeltacht of Gaoth Dobhair, Belfast born flute player Frankie Kennedy met fiddler and singer Maire´ad Ni´ Mhaonaigh, sparking off a deep musical connection, marriage in 1981, and a journey that took them everywhere. Their vision was to bring the unique repertoire of Donegal music to the world and that mission is still as strong as ever. Though Frankie Kennedy passed away in 1994, his vision, artistry and sense of fun is still at the heart of Altan and his legacy is carried and celebrated in every note.

Since 1971, Ramón Ayala y Sus Bravos Del Norte has virtually defined much of modern norteño music with his lyrics and distinctive accordion playing, while winning a lot of Grammy Awards and many, many fans along the way. He's an icon, pure and simple.
