MOMENTS OF ATTENTION Bill Baber creates vibrant paintings and lively mixed media sculptures utilizing bronze, copper, glass, and marble, which encourage the viewer to reflect with him as he revisits and reexamines the familiar, approaching the past with both expectations and questions. He asks, what has changed over time? Guided by his knowledge of materials, resourcefulness, and unique ability to artfully deconstruct, Baber aims to reassign value to that which would otherwise be discarded. Forging together new observations with old elements, his work feels recognizable yet foreign. His vivid use of color and fusion of elements enliven the imagination, opening a keyhole for travel into spaces of time.

“I maintain bronze, steel, and glass accumulations found in dumpsters, on side streets and corners. They are weathered, anonymous pieces. I collect them, harbor them, and give them a home. I apply an intentional framework, and thread them with my thoughts. What’s not there sows my creative efforts. I work images through a process that uses steel, glass, computers, weavings, and painting. An interactive relationship, it is driven by the instant between awareness and disciplined spontaneity. Woven deep into the tempo of resolution are moments of attention and the clarity of not knowing.”
