SARA SJOL Described as engrossingly emotive and visually innovative, artist Sara Sjol takes her love of line and color and weaves them together in a vibrant and visual manner that carries through both her paper and mixed media works. Her upcoming show A Sense of Place will feature abstract works on paper. These works are based on a series of locations. Describing her process Sjol says “It’s kinda like a Rubric cube. I dice up memories and placed them back together.” Sjol’s work is held in collections from across the US. She is also founder of The Recycled Rain Project; a Portland-based nonprofit that curates a juried art show featuring new works created by incorporating captured rainwater.

Jeff strives to evoke the power of the external and internal forces that one often experiences in nature. “My work represents a spiritual journey and the balance found in the harmonies I see between the environment and man as a voyeur passing through time,” he explains, “I use thin glazes and layers of transparent pigments to emulate the atmospheric conditions that exist in the natural world.”

BEN HUCKE

Portland native Ben Hucke, discovered drawing after the age of 30. It all started with a pen, a piece of paper, with the single goal of just having fun drawing some of his favorite places and objects. “Drawing has fulfilled my eagerness to accomplish and learn everyday with the same intensity I once felt as a professional BMX rider”. “It is a very organic process which became a portal from professional athlete to artist”. “The technique of scribbling and layering with fine liner pens is an exciting process to watch come together over hundreds of hours.” DOM PERIGNON 36” X 60” / Ink

IN THE STUDIO

WITH CHUCK GUMPERT

WE GO INSIDE THE STUDIO OF PACIFIC NORTHWEST ARTIST CHUCK GUMPERT AS HE PREPARES FOR HIS UPCOMING SHOW JUNE & JULY 2018 AT GALLERY 903. Oil sticks are Chuck’s current go-to medium in the studio. They allow him to create complex surfaces, rich palettes, and bold or subtle highlights. He enjoys the immediacy and action of drawing with an oil stick, coupled with the freedom to blend directly on the canvas or with a palette knife. Faster dry time enables working actively on multiple pieces simultaneously — resulting in unusual textures and dreamy atmospheres — with experimentation and “happy accidents” that are unique to the medium. We can hardly wait to see what Chuck comes up with next in his studio sessions!
