FROM THE OFFICE OF THE CEO 2018 has been a year of milestones for Galileo. In 2018, Galileo reached its highest number of student enrollment. Targets were attained and surpassed. It wouldn’t be the last and we plan on hitting a bigger goal. In 2018, we also focused on improving center operations. New and rewarding ways of recognizing the hardwork of our centers, through its admin, teachers and directors; were conceived. Standard policies and guidelines were reinforced with the aim of improving operations status quo. In 2018, we worked on program improvements and developments so that we could provide the quality services for our Galileo learners. Now that we are in 2019, we continue to look forward. We look forward to a vision of Galileo’s future, two to three, to five years or more from now. We look forward to how the possibilities for Galileo can become endless. But we won’t be able to reach those next milestones without the quality collaborative efforts of the Galileo family -- from the head office, the center directors, teachers, parents, and students. This year, we focus on quality collaboration. We put importance on partnerships with companies and people who share a common goal of reaching more students and providing them with quality education. In July, we are launching a partnership with Add-Venture Learning, a company headquartered in Singapore which provides math products and services that would strengthen our Singapore Math Program. We will also start offering Training with CPD units to our teachers to support their professional development and to reach more students with their new found skills in teaching. We started 2019 well because of our careful preparations and planning in 2018. As we take another step forward towards our goals, let us remember that it is not how good we started. It is how well we finish. So, together, let’s finish strong through quality collaboration. Ma. Rowena J. Matti CEO, Galileo Enrichment Learning Program

Wiz’s Wisdom Corner Quality Collaboration:

ABOVE AND BEYOND 2019 First Director’s Summit

“We cannot teach people anything; we can only help them discover it within themselves.” - Galileo Galilei It was a day of discovery and togetherness as the Galileo Center Directors gathered for the first Directors’ Summit for 2019. Held last February 13 (two days before Galileo Galilei’s birthday), the summit aimed to start the year right by directing the center directors towards a common goal -- to be the preferred enrichment program nationwide. “Achieving the goal will not be possible without quality collaboration,” CEO Ms. Rowie Matti shared. She also revealed that “Quality Collaboration” is the theme for 2019, which she hoped that all the center directors would emulate. “Galileo is committed to working together with not just the Head Office, but with the center directors, parents, and students as well. And together, we will be able to come up with something excellent.” The center directors also heard from Ms. Chit Juan, the CEO of ECHO Store, a social enterprise and retail store. She shared her insights on finding passion and using it to make a business grow. She reaffirmed the reasons why the center directors partnered with Galileo as a franchise. Franchising means constant collaboration and believing in the brand, its advocacy, and its mission to help customers grow and improve their lives.

Afterward, the center directors had a workshop on securing and increasing revenue, held by franchise expert Mr. Ted Estacio. They took a closer look at their plans for the year, as well as devise effective marketing and teaching strategies to reach more students and share the Galileo education with their community. “We are all pieces of a puzzle where each piece is a significant part in completing the big picture,” said Ms. Rowie. The Summit ended with an exercise, as the Center Directors shared their commitment statements and put them all together to form a puzzle.

The Directors’ Summit helped the Center Directors realize that they are not alone in implementing the Galileo Programs in their areas. Through events such as these, ideas are shared, issues are identified, solutions are proposed, and plans are supported -- the mark of a true and quality collaboration.

PARENT FEATURE The success of every student lies not only with the teachers but the parents as well. Parents are the people who put their trust in Galileo and help cultivate a community of learning in their children. The Galileo learners are the testament of the hard work that parents and teachers put into them. Hear success stories from Galileo parents and see how Galileo has created a community of independent and lifelong learners.

Name of Parent: Lorena Villareal Name of Child: Joren Justin Villareal

I enrolled my son Joren Justin in Galileo when he was 4 years old. Before enrolling, he didn’t know how to write his name or read simple words. After 3 months into the Galileo program, my son already knew how to write and read 3-letter words. We were amazed with the results that Galileo has done for my son so we decided to keep him enrolled until now. He is now in Grade 3 and always excels in his students. I’m so grateful that Joren is part of this program. I do not regret spending for his monthly learning fees because I believe that my son’s academic, values, and attitude development are much more important than other material things. I recommend Galileo to other parents because they provide help to students who have difficulties in Math and English. I assure you that learning will last with Galileo.

TEACHER FEATURE Name of Theacher : Celine M. Nablo Center: Galileo Olongapo

How did you become a Galileo teacher? I learned about Galileo when Teacher Melissa of Galileo Subic Town told me about it. I have always hoped that Filipino children could have access to good quality education and if we are able to do that, we can produce productive and responsible citizens. And I believe that I can do my part in producing excellent students with Galileo. How has Galileo helped you as an individual? Galileo helped me not only to do better but to do the best thing that I can. Through the differences of my students, I had learned to renew my self, to study more, because I think, it is needed. What advice would you give to aspiring teachers? Teaching is a talent. Be prepared. Your students are expecting more from you. Have plan and work your plan. Keep in mind that teaching is not only about teaching, it is about inspiring students to do more for themselves. What advice can you share to parents who wish to also teach their kids at home? Children have different learning styles. You need to understand first their styles of learning and then apply the effective ways to teach them. If he/she needs more motivation in doing his/her work, give motivation. If he/she learns through play, then play with him/her. It is a case to case basis. Don’t lose hope. Learning is fun!

STUDENT FEATURE The students are the stars of the Galileo program. Galileo’s success lies on the success of the students whose learning experiences have been enriched and developed through its programs. Hear from the students themselves on how Galileo has helped them become better and life long learners.

Name of Student: Akisha Monding Center: Galileo Malabon

I started my Galileo journey in 2014 when I was 3 years old. I am now a grade 1 and honor student, thanks to Galileo. I am thankful to my Galileo teachers because they taught me techniques in solving for Math problems. I don’t experience any difficulty in Math because Galileo prepares me for every lesson that I take. Galileo taught me how to be independent and be confident in my studies. They taught me also how to develop good study habits, which is why I excel in class. I am thankful to Teacher Fids and Teacher Rose for being patient with me whenever I have questions regarding my studies. I learned that learning is a step-by-step process that needs a lot of patience and focus. Through the help of Galileo, learning is fun and interesting.

Bling’s Discoveries

FEATURED PROGRAM The roots of this homegrown approach to Math started from a country with a population that struggled with Mathematics. Like most developing countries, they depended on textbooks and curriculum from foreign publishers. Recognizing the important role of Math education in shaping the citizens’ global proficiency, the Ministers of Education decided to take charge of the country’s learning roadmap and developed an approach never before used in the world. Enter Singapore Math, a teaching method that places emphasis on mathematical fluency through problem-solving without the need for rote learning and memorization. Fewer topics are introduced per level but discussed in greater detail, allowing deeper understanding and creating a strong foundation for higher math learning. This change in direction proved effective as the country reaped its benefits. Since 1995, Singapore has consistently ranked first (or in the top three) in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). The tables suddenly turned and Singapore Math became the resource and standard of effective approaches to learning Math. Now, over 25 countries including USA, Canada, France, Saudi Arabia, and Israel (including the Philippines) have incorporated Singapore Math into their textbooks. As one of the pioneers in advancement in learning, Galileo Enrichment Learning Program was the first to introduce Singapore Math as an after-school program and the first to hold Singapore Math Festivals in the Philippines. The Galileo Singapore Math Program aims to enhance the Math skills of students aged 6-12 through the ConcretePictorial-Abstract (CPA) Approach. This learning strategy allows the student to represent math concepts first through actual and concrete objects, then reinforced with a visual method called bar modeling, before finally progressing to mental solving techniques. To strengthen its Singapore Math Program, Galileo has partnered with Add-Venture Learning, a publishing and training company headquartered in Singapore. Add-Venture Learning specializes in making Singapore Math an enjoyable experience for students through their game packages, apps, magazines, and training. Behind their products are prominent figures in the world of Singapore Math and are recognized for their contribution in shaping and training Singapore teachers of the Ministry of Education. The two educational think tanks have shared teaching and learning philosophies which complement their approach to making learning fun and meaningful through play. Both Galileo and Add-Venture believe that a child learns best by enjoying what is taught. Both companies employ game-play elements and a variety of activities to bring amusement, wonder, and knowledge in every engagement of any child.

Bling’s Discoveries

To introduce the partnership, Galileo and Add-Venture Learning held a special event entitled “Awesome Singapore Math Add-Ventures.” The event discussed the hows and whys of Singapore Math by demonstrating how to unlock sample Math problems. The discussion was handled by Dr. Queena Lee-Chua, one of the leading minds in Math and an advocate of Singapore Math. She was joined by Scott L. Chua, who shared his experiences of transitioning into a Singapore Math program and how it helped shape his Math skills.
