hat an amazing and enjoyable year 2019 was! It has been a privilege to be Lady Captain of such committed, enthusiastic and sociable ladies. Members played in individual and team ILGU competitions with our Junior Cup team progressing to the district final. Thanks to all team captains and players for their commitment. Lady Captain’s Day in June was a highlight. Thanks to Rodney McKay and his team, the course was in excellent condition and the meal and prizegiving at Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort was fabulous. Sally Ann Roddy was a worthy winner before we danced the night away. The weather was kind to us on our away day to Roe Park. A bus full of vibrant ladies, great craic with the outing won by Anne Brownlee! Another lively away day to Knightsbrook saw Ciara Murray lift the Kirkenny Trophy! Watching professional ladies and men at the

ISPS Handa World Invitational was fantastic. Full credit to Gary Henry and his team. I enjoyed working as a scorer and the hospitality! I was proud of the successful charity fashion show raising funds for The Alzheimer’s Society. Thanks to all for their support. Prize Night at the Castle Kitchen + Bar in October ended the season well. Jacqui Galbraith was our Player of the Year (and now Teacher of the Year), a fantastic achievement on both fronts. I would like to thank my husband and committee who worked tirelessly. Thanks also to Gary, Ross Oliver and all the pro-shop staff for their help and support throughout the year. Finally, I would like to wish our incoming Captain, Carol Reid, all the best for 2020. Julie Murray Lady Captain, Galgorm Castle Golf Club

t was a great pleasure to be Captain of Galgorm Castle Golf Club for 2019. I have had a very busy and exciting year supported by a great team of office bearers and committee members. One of my first duties was to support our men’s and ladies’ teams in the various Golfing Union of Ireland competitions. We may not have been as successful as we would have liked but a big thank you is due to everyone who set time aside to represent our club. Our Head Greenkeeper, Rodney McKay, and his team do a fantastic job in keeping the course looking its best all year round. We have a course that we should all be proud of. Captain’s Day on Saturday 29th June was a memorable day. I was handing over goody bags and encouraging everyone to play well in their pursuit of my Captain’s Prize. It was a fantastic day that I will always fondly remember.

The ISPS Handa World Invitational was a great success. As Captain I would like to convey my thanks to Gary Henry and his team for presenting our course and facilities in such great condition. I had a very enjoyable day at the Max Hadden day for club captains at Royal Belfast. Unfortunately, I was not in the prizes! To end the year on a high we had a very successful Member’s Prize Draw and Christmas Bonanza. Finally, I would like to wish our incoming Club Captain, Raymond Lynn, every success. I know he will do an excellent job.

TaylorMade SIM - Shape in Motion

aylorMade has built on its history of metalwood innovation and groundbreaking technologies with the all-new SIM family, highlighted by drivers, fairways and hybrids all available now at Galgorm Castle, a TaylorMade Select Fit Centre. With an asymmetric sole design and enhanced Inertia Generator, SIM drivers rely on geometry to unlock the next frontier of performance. A series of shape-inspired innovations work in unison to improve forgiveness while also increasing

aerodynamics and clubhead speed at the most critical stage of the swing – the last three feet (one metre) of the swing prior to impact. Known as the speed generation zone, this is where the most meaningful increase of clubhead speed occurs. At the Tour level, players commonly accelerate from 90mph to 120mph in that moment of truth. SIM drivers are engineered to improve aerodynamics, and thus clubhead speed, through this critical phase of the golf swing.

New extended practice putting green adjacent to the first tee

The Autumm/Winter projects at Galgorm focused on making the course more playable, improving drainage and ensuring the course holds more interest and appeal, with Rodney McKay

he heavy lifting definitely takes place during the winter months. This is a crucial part of the cycle to ensure a championship course like Galgorm Castle retains consistency of standard for the year. It’s this literal groundwork that lays the foundations to ensure Galgorm remains one of the best parklands in the country; a course capable of peaking for the club’s major events such as captains’ days or staging a full Tour event, which Galgorm has now done for over a decade. All the while, improving playability and course aesthetics year-on-year. RESHAPING FAIRWAYS As in previous years, there was no let-up in the Autumn/Winter pro-

jects. In a strategic move, a number of fairways were reshaped to make them wider for the average club golfer but tighter in in certain areas for the longer hitting elite golfer. The doglegs were softened at the first and 11th, while the fairway was widened at the 18th adjacent to the fairway bunker. NEW BUNKERING Members will notice a number of new bunkers while others have been reshaped and refurbished. This makes the holes more appealing when playing but also helps with drainage. The bunker complex at the 15th is almost complete. Reshaping of the bunker at the 13th adds a new element to the approach shot. It is now larger and

features more front left of the green. A new bunker at the back of the 10th green will become a great new visual, while assisting with drainage. There will also be a new bunker on the mound left of the second green. TEE BOXES A number of tee boxes have been extended to help playability but also spread wear and tear over the course of the year. A new tee complex has been built and turfed at the 11th. From there the river is more visible and creates a slightly new angle while assisting with drainage. A new championship tee has been created at the 16th. The trees surrounding the monument stones adjacent to the 15th green have been thinned so the stones can be seen

New bunker right of the 15th green

AFTER from the 15th and also from the third tee. The oaks were replanted beside the new championship tee. Elsewhere tees on the fifth were also extended and new sleeper walls provide a great new aesthetic. PRACTICE FACILITIES The biggest undertaking this winter was doubling the surface of the practice putting green adjacent to the first tee. Over 200 tonnes of soil and clay had to be removed to construct a drainage system for the new green. A stone carpet and extensive root zone was created before specialised grass was laid. 007 DSB CREEPING BENT The new putting green turf is the best in the business, 007 DSB Creeping Bent, the same used at Wentworth’s West Course. It is highly adaptable to warm summers and cold winters and particularly disease resistant. Our overseeding programme uses this seed too, with the aim to become predominantly creeping bent grass rather than poa annua (meadow) grass.

GARY HENRY Managing Director Galgorm Castle

At the turn of a new decade, it’s an appropriate time to take stock and look at how far we have come over the years; to acknowledge the vision of one individual and the Board for their commitment and investment; the hard work by all the team that continues to make Galgorm the success story that it is and, just as importantly, you the members who are integral to the Galgorm story. We’re not finished yet. Although we have come a long way, there is still the promise of plenty more to come... IT HAS BEEN QUITE A JOURNEY, HOW DO YOU LOOK BACK ON IT? I joined Galgorm 12 years ago at the end of 2008 when the world was falling apart, and we were in the midst of a global recession. But even through those tough times there has always been an unwavering support from the Board, and it’s been that commitment and continued investment which has put us in such a strong position today. I also must make specific mention to Christopher Brooke for it really is his longterm vision from over 30 years ago, which is coming to fruition today. WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER DRIVING THROUGH THE GATES IN 2008? First of all, most businesses were battening down the hatches during

the recession whereas Galgorm as an organisation continued to significantly invest in the golf course and across the estate year on year. At that time, we effectively had a disused castle, a small courtyard and a golf club, that was it. At the time the course had a reputation for being wet with pretty poor drainage, but we’ve made great strides in 10 years. WHAT ARE THE MAJOR CHANGES? You could say the first ‘game changer’ was the garden centre (Creative Gardens). It is no exaggeration to say the garden centre has been extremely successful and is one of the best in Ireland. The Business Courtyard quickly followed around the middle of the last decade, which has evolved and continues to have

DID THE CASTLE COME INTO THE SPOTLIGHT AROUND THEN TOO? It literally did when the castle was used by production companies as a film and TV set. Frankenstein’s Chronicles and BBC drama Mrs Wilson were just some of the productions filmed at the castle. The Jacobean Castle was about to write its own new chapter. The entire ground floor was refurbished and is the focal point for the estate. This investment made way for the creation of the Ivory Pavilion. The large marquee, wedding and events venue situated within the walled gardens at the castle is now prime event space for all sorts of functions, meetings and weddings. A LOT OF PROJECTS AND BARELY A MENTION OF GOLF YET? The Fun Golf Area encompasses the 6-hole Pitch and Putt and Himalayas Putting Green that replicates the famous attraction at the Home of Golf in St Andrews. This is a great facility to encourage non-golfers to try the game. It is also a great practice area for members. The Galgorm Fairy Trail also runs out of Toadstool Cottage at the Fun Golf Area. This is another great addition to the estate, ideal for young families and this educational journey really opens up the estate for children and adults to explore. We also have more exciting plans for the estate. DID I HEAR YOU MENTION GOLF CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE? Galgorm is unquestionably a golf centre of excellence with some of

the best facilities in Ireland. You could say former European Tour player Gareth Maybin setting up his academy at Galgorm was the final part of that jigsaw. Players of all standards, plus beginners, come here to work on their game. Gareth has a state-of-the-art teaching studio and all the main European Tour players from around the province come to Galgorm; players like Michael Hoey, Dermot McElroy and Tom McKibbin because of the course condition all year round and the facilities. YOU’VE ALSO JOINED FORCES WITH GALGORM RESORT? We always worked very closely with Galgorm Resort but in recent years we developed a strategic partnership with our neighbours Galgorm Resort & Spa. We now reach out as a joint organisation to the international tourism market. This has been critical for driving the local economy, especially after the Ballymena area has taken a lot of hits with big manufacturers disappearing. Tourism is the one thriving area and together we are leading the way. HOW DOES THIS ALL WORK? We rebranded last year to create Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort while Galgorm Castle Golf Club retained its name. Collectively, we are the second biggest employer in the area with over 1,000 team across both sites. We are a major contributor to the borough and it’s also great to see so many international golf tourists, who now come to Galgorm then go on to places like Royal Portrush and Royal County Down. It helps the local economy and ultimately everyone benefits. TELL US MORE ABOUT THE CASTLE KITCHEN + BAR? The partnership meant the Resort

took over the clubhouse restaurant and completely transformed it into the stunning Castle Kitchen + Bar. It really is a superb addition for members, guests and the general public to enjoy. They also created a brand-new conservatory area and there is nothing else like it in golfing terms. Investment in this alone was close to £1 million. The contemporary style is something Gleneagles and Carton House have invested in for a similar feel. The Castle Kitchen + Bar is very popular and as a result this new clubhouse model now means it is viable and more sustainable. LET’S TALK MORE ABOUT GOLF AND THE CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE? Every year we invest in the course. Drainage has been a big focus in the last decade. We’re not finished yet and we have more good work to do on the ninth and 18th. We’ve worked on the strategic element of the course in the last five years too. New tees, forward, back, sideways to improve playability for all standards, from the club golfer to tour pros hanging off the back of tees. The likes of the fifth just now is a really pleasing project. We are constantly trying to make the course more attractive on the eye and ultimately more enjoyable to play. Galgorm is a course for everyone, not just tour players. We’ve put so much investment in that we can now have a great conditioned course all year but also turn it into a tour venue for one week of the year. This combined with the unrivalled practice facilities makes Galgorm stand out from the rest. The short game area will be another focus and we remind members that the fun golf area is the best place for sustained

practice rather than the short game area for it helps spread wear and tear. If I can jump on my soapbox for a second, I need to call out the players who practice on the course and take six or seven divots in a line or don’t follow roped off areas with their trolleys. We are at our wits end and they are spoiling it for other members. It needs to stop. WHAT’S THE FUTURE VISION? We are something like the third or fourth best parkland in Northern Ireland - our aim is to become number one. Galgorm has evolved as a tournament venue over the last decade. From the George Best Celebrity Pro-am through to the NI Open and now the World Invitational, Galgorm has gained an international reputation. We aspire to be the best and will keep working towards that goal. In the coming weeks we will announce exciting news that will take the World Invitational and Galgorm to a whole new level with one of the premier events in world golf. AND FINALLY, HOW DO YOU SUM UP THE JOURNEY SO FAR? We have a great membership; it’s thriving compared to most clubs. From a strong junior section to the stalwarts who are in with the bricks. Nothing would be possible without the team we have. From Rodney and his greenkeeping staff, who keep the course to such a high standard to everyone at the clubhouse and around the estate. We must also thank the Board for their vision, investment and unwavering support. Galgorm is a product we should all be proud of. I don’t say this lightly, we’ve come a long way, but I promise you, there is plenty more still to come…
