GIVING GCF Community Report Winter 2015

It is hard to believe the giving season is upon us. Just yesterday it was 90 degrees and summer break was in full swing. Today, as the first snow of the season has fallen, it is also the time of year when we think about giving. At the Community Foundation our minds are focused on year-end giving and helping our community members connect with causes they care about. We know that most charitable giving is done during year-end. We want you to know that there are many wonderful causes right here at home to consider. Our winter Community Report features funds here at the Foundation you may want to connect with and ways you can create your own fund. At the Galesburg Community Foundation we make giving simple, and we hope you know how much we appreciate your help in strengthening local philanthropy to support healthy communities.

IMPACT FUNDS

Communities are forever changing. Tomorrow will be much different from today. Providing our communities with resources to adapt and respond to change is paramount to their success. That’s why gifts to Impact Funds are powerful. They provide essential flexibility that enables Galesburg Community Foundation to seize opportunities to meet the demands and challenges of today’s rapidly changing environment. Individuals and families establish Impact Funds at GCF to help ensure GCF can provide necessary resources when such opportunities do arise.

COMMUNITY

FUNDS

Community Funds are powerful because they: • Allow communities to address their most pressing needs. • Provide flexible problem solving tools. No one can know what a community’s most urgent needs will be twenty years from now, and Community Funds allow your community to build the capacity to meet those future challenges.

• Serve as a catalyst for communitywide problem solving and decisionmaking. • Provide a receptacle for planned gifts or bequests for current and former residents who want to make a contribution. • Educate communities about the power of philanthropy and endowment building.

FUND SPOTLIGHT Knoxville is the first community to take part in the Community Fund matching grant program with GCF. Participating communities are challenged to raise $25,000, which is then matched with $25,000 from GCF to establish an endowment fund benefiting the community. GCF also provides participating communities with $5,000 to help market the challenge. Community Funds are important as they provide communities with the ability to respond to ever-changing needs.

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS

Donor advised funds are a simple, powerful and highly personal approach to giving. Donor Advised Funds allow you and your family to remain actively involved in your charitable interests. Donors establishing these funds recommend the organization or cause they want to support, and then gifts are distributed by GCF on behalf of their fund. Establishing a Donor Advised Fund is a great way to be actively involved in philanthropy while creating a family legacy.

SCHOLARSHIP

FUNDS

Scholarships provide an opportunity to inspire students and help them realize someone else cares about their academic achievements. Scholarships are a great way to help today’s students become tomorrow’s leaders. Endowed scholarships are established when a gift is set aside as principal and invested in perpetuity. Endowed scholarships are a great way to create a lasting gift in memory of a loved one or for organizations providing continuous student support.

FUND SPOTLIGHT ROWVA graduate Rylie Kalb of Wataga was recently awarded a scholarship for academic excellence from the Millie Martin Scholarship Fund established at GCF. Charles Martin of Victoria established the fund in honor of his late mother Millie Martin and her love for education. The scholarship is awarded each year to a female student graduating from ROWVA with the highest grade point average.

MORE THAN ONE WAY TO GIVE There are many ways to make a difference in our local communities. Community Treasures Thrift Shop provides yet another way for community members to support local philanthropy. Community Treasures, owned by the Galesburg Community Foundation, encourages and provides opportunities for community members to donate their used goods. The shop accepts gently used items including clothing, shoes, accessories and housewares. When you shop Community Treasures for gently used items, the proceeds from your purchase go to GCF to provide grants to area nonprofits. Volunteering is another great way to get involved in your community. Community Treasures provides a variety of opportunities for volunteering-- cashiering, heading up a clothing department, working with collectables or intaking donated items. There are many ways to make a difference. Maybe writing a check to support a fund isn’t the best way for you to support GCF and the causes you care about. That’s okay. Everyone has the opportunity to make a difference in ways that best meet their lifestyle. When you pass by Community Treasures Thrift Shop located at 444 E. Main Street in downtown Galesburg, just remember: donate, shop, volunteer. All are valuable ways to give back to your community and make a difference.
