This is the category that started it all, over 35 years ago. The HOT SPOT® Series is the Original Personal Monitor. The product line has expanded with the MICRO SPOT® Series and now the new NANO SPOT and CORE Series speakers. TM

The HOT SPOT® is a vocal reproduction monitor. The HOT SPOT® monitor was developed in 1977 by a sound company touring with musicians. The need for a near-field vocal monitor became necessary and thus the HOT SPOT® was born. The HOT SPOT® works great for numerous reasons. First, the HOT SPOT® can be set on a microphone stand, which allow them to be positioned closer to the user. This will actually help reduce feedback occurring on stage! Think about it, many performers purchase a 12" or 15" floor monitor and during the performance, roll off the low end and crank up the volume so the sound will travel from the floor to their ears. The HOT SPOT® boosts the mid range and it is closer to the performer, so there will be less stage volume, which reduces feedback. Second, the HOT SPOT® is physically smaller and lighter in weight, which makes it easier for transport, plus the clarity is superior to any larger floor monitor. Galaxy Audio® has produced hundreds of thousands of HOT SPOTS®. HOT SPOTS® work great for nearly any type of music or speech applications. The new outer shell design has many built in features and multiple accessories available. The new design released in 2010 maintains the same basic shape and features in which the HOT SPOT® has been know for nearly 35 years. The HOT SPOT® can be placed on a keyboard or narrow surface because of its small footprint. The HOT SPOT® can also be placed on a microphone stand. The unique mic stand socket allows the HOT SPOT® to set on most mic stands or use the included stand adaptor to work with any mic stand. The HOT SPOT 7® & PA6S have an integrated handle, mic boom mount, and build in bracket mounts. The mic boom mount, combined with the optional MBA (Mic Boom Adaptor) allows a gooseneck or microphone boom to be mounted to the top of the unit.

The PA6S has a built in 170 watt amplifier designed to handle the most demanding audio situations. This high tech Class D amplifier produces plenty of power to cover a wide variety of applications. This design allows the PA6S to function both as a stand-alone PA system and as a high-powered vocal monitor to cut through loud stage volumes. For larger gigs that require more coverage, you may simply patch from the Preamp Output to the main house PA, while using the PA6S as your onstage monitor.

The PA6S also features a built in 18dB Compressor/Limiter circuit with Compressor and Clip LEDs. The Compressor acts to smooth out transient peaks in the signals, thus improving overall sound quality and increasing apparent volume. The Limiter helps protect the woofer and tweeter from being damaged by amplifier distortion. The Clip LED indicates when a reduction in volume is recommended.

The PA6SR has all of the great features of the PA6S, plus a built in wireless receiver. The wireless option can be used in many ways: 1. With a handheld mic or a body pack transmitter with a headset/lavalier mic. The PA6SR will receive signals from one of the optional transmitters. This is very convenient for performers, teachers, or A/V presentations. 2. The receiver option may be used in conjunction with our AS-TXRM table top/rack mount transmitter. This allows a signal to be wirelessly transmitted to the PA6SR from a remote source.

The Nano Spot is the newest member of the Hot Spot family. Featuring a 3" driver, it has three inputs on the rear panel: XLR, 1/4", and 1/8" stereo summing. With 24V Phantom power, a 20dB pad, and built in compressor, you can go directly into the Nano Spot from your source or microphone. The NSPA can be used in call centers, computer monitoring, on the bar or patio* in a restaurant, and many other applications.

The MICRO SPOT® 5 is a great alternative to the HOT SPOT® series speakers. The MICRO SPOT® was designed to fit in small areas. Its small size combined with its vocal clarity allows it to be placed in the tightest areas and heard clearly. The Micro Spot® 5 is great for keyboard players, drummers, singers and many more. The MICRO SPOT® 5 can be mounted (mounting bracket included) on a microphone stand or to the wall. All major components of the stand are constructed of metal, most importantly, the hub where the tripod legs connect. A convenient Pistol Grip allows for easy adjustment of the height of the mic stand with only one hand. Telescoping mic boom allows the boom to be compacted to as little as 18" (47cm) or extended to as much as 34" (86cm). The Tilt feature allows the stand to be tilted forward or backward. The all new AS-1800 is the latest addition to our very popular line of WPM’s. The transmitter allows the user to select from 640 frequencies, has XLR/1/4" inputs, 2-¼" Line Outputs, selectable 30 or 100 mW transmitter output. Galaxy Audio’s new ERGOMIC wired microphone throws a curve into the typical microphone design. The interchangeable elements and unique form of the body make this a microphone for everyone. The ERGO body was designed with comfort in mind. We started with a thicker body, much like a wireless microphone. Second, the body tapers to fit the natural flow of your hand as you grip the microphone body. Third, a finger/hand rest allow for a relaxing place for your hand or finger and helps prevent your hand from sliding over the microphone element. Lastly, the solid metal construction provides excellent durability.

Topping off the innovative design of the ERGOMIC, the microphone heads can also be easily switched between a Dynamic or Condenser element. The GA64/SC utilizes Galaxy Audio’s popular mic elements from the HH64/HH64SC wireless mic transmitter. When the mic element is removed, this exposes a switch which must be moved when trading between condenser and dynamic elements. This switch is the on/off switch for the preamp when using phantom power to power the condenser element.

Each model can be accessed by the front panel or the convenient easy to use included software. User defined presets provide a useful tool to live sound, where a preset can be used for frequently visited venues or specific performers in a fixed install. Presets can be also be saved to internal or removable drives, in addition to the device itself, allowing for a preset to be designed in advance, and then downloaded on site. The DSPOT software provides many filtering and other detailed settings easily controlled on your PC, to refine your sound. All DSPOTs are perfect for fixed and live applications.


The Galaxy Audio DS-SP36 is a 3 in 6 out Speaker Management System. Each input can be easily assigned to each of the 6 outputs. The new AXS line features a full line of analog audio mixers. The AXS series offers 5 different desk top models with 3 available in a rack mount version. All models have a USB connection to link to a computer for stereo playback or recording and have +48V phantom power to the XLR inputs. The TV5X has a built in 40 watt power amplifier with a 5" full range woofer and tone control. The TV5X, like other models in the Traveler Series, can be configured with up to two UHF wireless receivers or a Bluetooth receiver. Each UHF receiver has two different handheld mics and two body pack transmitters to choose from. There is also an optional MP3 player available which can play MP3s from USB or SD card. The TV5X has a ¼" mic input with volume control, 1/8" input and output, and 4 bar battery level indicator. What To Do If Your Polarity Isn’t Quite CRICKET At 10 feet (8.9msec), it is half way around at 180 degrees, and at 5 feet (4.45msec), one fourth the way at 90 degrees.

Irregularities in a sound system can be difficult to pinpoint. If your PA gear is in good shape, but bass response sounds muddy, the highs lack the crispiness you’ve come to demand, and in some areas of the room the music seems to disappear into some sort of sonic fogs, you’ve probably got a polarity problem. The solution is Galaxy Audio’s CRICKET Polarity and Continuity Test Set. Polarity and phase are terms that often, and erroneously, are used interchangeably. Polarity in simple electrical terms, is plus and minus voltage.

Compare that to a 150Hz tone from that same speaker, it reaches 360 degrees of phase rotation at 7.5 feet. So it depends on what the frequency is, and at what distance traveled, to determine the “Phase”. Two signals can be positive in polarity, but if one is delayed from the other there will be a difference in “Phase”. It is important that all of the drivers in your system be in polarity, meaning that when you send them a positive voltage, they will move forward causing a compression of the air, and when sent a negative voltage they move backwards causing a rarefaction of the air. There will be some speaker systems, where depending on the type of crossover,

two sources are emitting the same electrical or acoustical signal (frequency), and one of those sources is in a state of inverted polarity, those signals, when combined at a given point, will cancel each other. And while cancellation does not always indicate a complete loss of all sound, it does result in diminished sound quality. Major mic manufacturers have been known to build mics which are out of polarity. Many mixers invert polarity. Amplifier inputs are also notorious offenders. One well known company previously marked its positive terminals black rather than red like the rest of the industry. Speakers are rife with opportunities for polarity inversion. Cancellation can occur between monitor speakers and the front-of-house system. Different cabinets within a single stack or cluster, or different drivers in

Polarity is absolute. The root of Polarity is the word “pole”. Think polar opposites, north and south pole, bipolar, etc. No matter what the distance or time, it is either in or out, positive or negative. The positive is when your speaker moves forward, and the negative is when it moves backwards. Phase is where a wave is at in a given point in time. A sound wave is a repeating pattern of compression (high pressure) and rarefaction (low pressure) of the air. Phase varies from 0 degrees to 360 degrees, which is the time it takes for the full pattern. This time is also the wave length when converted into distance. A 56Hz tone has a wave length of about 20 feet (based on the speed of sound being 1125 feet per second). If you play a 56Hz tone through your speaker, in the time it takes to travel 20 feet (17.8msec), it will start at 0 degrees phase and go all the way around to 360 degrees.

the high frequency drivers may be wired to be out of polarity. You should consult the speaker manufacture if you are not certain what yours should be. Polarity is a condition that affects the quality of sound produced by a transducer. Keep in mind that transducers convert one form of energy into another. Mics and pickups turn into acoustical energy. All are transducers. Polarity, should it become reversed, can play havoc with a sound system. If

the same enclosure, can be out of polarity. In even the simplest systems there are all sorts of ways for polarity to become reversed. Of course, more complex systems have greater potential for problems. The Cricket can test the polarity of mics, mixers, effects, amps, cables, speakers, and all sorts of devices. It can also eliminate hours of troubleshooting.

A. According to their specifications, most amplifiers do indeed produce more power at 8 ohms than at 16 ohms. As impedance is decreased (more speakers, wired in parallel, are powered by the amp) the amp’s rated power increases. Most solid-state amplifiers are designed to hold the output at a constant voltage. An amp design to produce eight volts will do so into 4 ohms, 8 ohms, 16 ohms, and so on. Power then follows the equation, POWER=V2/R. In this case, power would be 16 watts, 8 watts, or 4 watts, respectively.

As the load is reduced, the amplifier reaches a point beyond which its power no longer doubles; usually at around 5 or 6 ohms. Any several factors may produce this result. The most common is that the amp’s power supply is not capable of meeting the increased current demand. Another occurs when the higher current produces losses in the amp’s power output circuit. The 16 ohm HOT SPOT®, even when wired in parallel, ensures that you get the most from your amplifier.

How do I know my HOT SPOTS are positioned for optimum performance? A. Proper placement is the most important factor. 1. Each performer must be able to hear his/her own HOT SPOT®. 2. The HOT SPOT® should be placed close enough to touch. The closer the HOT SPOT® is to you, the louder it is. One of the primary advantages of the HOT SPOT® is its ability to be placed close to the performer. 3. The HOT SPOT® should be positioned behind the microphone. 4. If one HOT SPOT® is substantially closer to a vocal mic, that HOT SPOT’s® volume may need to be reduced so that it will not affect the entire monitor system. B. Use a unidirectional mic such as the GA64, GA64SC, and RT-66 that has wide variance in their amounts of rejection. Experiment with several.

C. Equalize your system 1. With all the mics at working volume, increase the level of the monitors gradually until they reach the point immediately before feedback. They (the monitors) should barely ring. Cut the

level of the ringing frequency by 2 dB or 3 dB. Periodically speak into one of the mics while repeating this process. Continue until several notes ring at once—or until over-equalization causes a reduction in sound quality—then back off until you arrive at a setting that sounds good. 2. In high volume applications reduce, in the monitor mix, all frequencies below 150 Hz. Since low notes are nondirectional, and can be heard from anywhere on the stage, they are not needed in the monitors. D. Attend to distortion problems. If your HOT SPOTs® are distorting it’s probably because your amp is running out of power. Use a larger amp or reduce the bass frequencies (they are for real power hogs) in the monitor mix. E. Do NOT plug-in or unplug your HOT SPOTs® while they’re operating. Doing so may damage your amp. F. Concentrate on looking cool.


OHM’S LAW AND THE HOT SPOT

®

All unpowered HOT SPOTS® and MICRO SPOTS have a 16 ohm impedance and, like most professional-type speakers, have jacks which are wired in parallel (meaning the signal can travel into one jack and out of the other).Think of each speaker as a “load” added to the amplifier. The greater the number of speakers, the heavier the load. Adding too many speakers can overload the amplifier, causing it to overheat and distort. If the amplifier begins to distort, or if it becomes hot to the touch, disconnect any extra speakers. One easy way to determine the load on the amplifier is to use Ohm’s law, which states: “The total impedance of N speakers in parallel is equal to the reciprocal of the sum of the reciprocals.” In equation form: Where Z1 is the impedance (or ohm rating) for the first speaker, Z2 for the second, and so on, for every speaker in the chain. This equation calculates the total impedance of the speaker system, which should NOT be lower than the minimum impedance rating of the amplifier.

For one pair of speakers use the short form of the equation: the product of the two speakers divided by the sum of the two speakers is equal to the total impedance or the equivalent impedance of the speaker system. This equation may be used to calculate the equivalent impedance for additional speakers in two-speaker increments. Determine the impedance of the first two speakers, substitute Z total for Z , and include the next speaker. Repeat the process until all speakers have been included. The result should be the same as with the first method. A word of caution: polarity rules must be observed when connecting multiple speakers. Polarity will not affect the Z, but can affect the quality and volume of the sound. If you are having problems with any of these applications use Galaxy Audio’s CRICKET® Polarity and Continuity Test Set to check the polarity of your cables.
