Spring 2013 - Volume 10 Snellville Spirit Magazine is produced by: Snellville Tourism & Trade Association Dear Snellville Supporter: Snellville Tourism & Trade (STAT) is beginning its third full year of service to our local community. We started with just a few volunteers who were determined to start a farmers’ market. We have since grown to become an organization that brings events to area residents from May through December, hosts the award winning Snellville Farmers’ Market, and publishes a community magazine while promoting our city’s businesses and entrepreneurs. I am most amazed that the many accomplishments of STAT are due to the efforts of volunteers who are proud of Snellville and work so diligently to make our community a better place to live and visit. Our volunteers not only man and run our events, their creativity and innovation continue to bring about even richer experiences for those who spend their time in Snellville. STAT is planning another full slate of events for 2013, beginning with the Beach Blast in June and concluding with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting in December. You’ll find a complete schedule on pages 18 and 19 of this issue. We invite you to join us in bringing these events to Snellville; there are many opportunities for volunteers to be involved with STAT. From working on a planning committee, to helping out on the day of an event or even writing an article for the Snellville Spirit, we welcome the efforts of those who want to be part of something good for our community. There is a solid wall that stands between us and our enemies. It is composed of the men and women who fight for our freedoms and protect us from tyrannies of the sort we can usually only experience in works of fiction, photos and articles from “the front” - wherever that front may be. They are a brotherhood. A cadre. Unified in their intent to serve their country, protect us, our rights, and protect each other. No matter the war or enemy, no matter the branch of service, the common denominators are not just duty and courage, but strength and a strong sense of responsibility. I am always in awe of the strong - but usually quiet - authority exuded by the warriors in our midst. Snellville has an active veterans presence through the VFW Post 4180 and the American Legion Post 232 (3163 Highway 78). Beyond veterans assistance locally, through these organizations, they have created friendships to last a lifetime based on respect and shared experiences that many times, can only be appreciated and understood by a fellow serviceman. The “been there-done that” of war that many of us can really never imagine.

We had an incredible opportunity to meet with a few of these men and women recently; I am amazed at the distinguished service expended upon our behalf - MY behalf - recognized by the many medals and awards. It makes something like building a wall in their honor a bit more personal and a bit more realistically tied to the individuals who stand for us. I hope you’ll enjoy reading their stories and when you see them on the street, shake their hand and say “thanks.” They’ll appreciate that you understand.

U.S. Army - 1943 World War II A job transfer brought Charles Smith to Snellville. Married with three daughters, Charles knows what it is like to be left alone in enemy territory. He’s been there - wounded - and done that. He served during the Battle of the Bulge and for his outstanding service and bravery during WWII, was awarded a Silver Star, a Purple Heart, and the French Cross of War.

Patricia and Truitt met while stationed at F.E. Warren AFB in Wyoming; they’ve been married for 43 years and enjoy two children, six grand children and two greatgrandchildren.

U.S. Army - 1967-1968; 1969-1970 Vietnam John Gardner recalls that after serving two years in Vietnam, returning home was great. Retiring after 27 years, John received a job in Atlanta and has called Snellville “home” for 30 years. He received a Bronze Star Meritorious Medal during his service.

Patricia served from 1964-1968 with the 1st USAF Medical Squadron at Selfridge AFB in Michigan, then with Medical Squadron, Dental Lab at March AFB in California.

ROBERT VARONE U.S. Air Force 1969 Vietnam

Bob Varone has served on a C130 Aircraft Combat Support Group. He received the USAF Outstanding Unit Award, National Defense Service, Expert Rifleman, Vietnam Service Award and the USAF Good Conduct Medal.

Truitt served in the USAF from 1966-1970 and saw duty in Vietnam. He was with the 1st Geodetic Survey Squadron and received a unit citation.

U.S. Army - 1952-1953 Korea For his service in Korea, Bobby Hendershott was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB), the U.S. Army combat service recognition decoration awarded to Infantry or Special Forces soldiers.

U.S. Army - 1963-2000 - Vietnam James Lynch is the recipient of three Army Commendation Medals and found his way to Snellville with a job transfer.

Gary Bayer moved to Snellville from St. Louis in 1977 with an Army legacy through his father, who was captured at the Battle of Bulge and escaped after 3 days. Gary’s first job in Vietnam was working with the enemy to bring them over to “our side”.

U.S. Army - 1966-1969 Korea Defense Richard Buchwald moved to Snellville when he was transferred here for his job. He is the recipient of the the Army Expeditionary medal, Korea Defense Medal, Expert Infantry Badge, and a National Defense Service medal.

U.S. Army 2005-2006 Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) A recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal for Service in Afghanistan, Ed Parkins is now the Junior Leadership Corps Instructor for Snellville Middle School. He recalls the first time his base came under missile attack as “both exciting and scary at the same time.” He met his wife, Melissa, when she was a member of the Wounded Warrior Project. When he retired, he followed her to North Georgia. He has two sons - ages 23 and 27, and one beautiful daughter, age 11.

U.S. Air Force, Retired SM Sgt (E-B) 1962-1982 Vietnam Jimmy Jackson is the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal with One Oak Leaf and an Air Force Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaves. His most exciting memory is working as a Radar Navigation Technician on SR-71 Recon, B-52 Bomber and KC-135 Tanker. He and his family enjoyed 2 tours in Germany from 1973-1980 and after retirement from the USAF, Jimmy got a job working in DeKalb County.

U.S. Army - 1974-2004 Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom A native of Tucker, Georgia, Robert Spidel received two Legion of Merit Awards and two Bronze Star Awards during his tours. He spent 21 of his 30 years stationed in Germany, serving as a Batallion Commander in Wiesbaden (1993-1995) and then as the Garrison Commander of Aberdeen Proving Guard in Maryland (1998-2001). He has provided logistications coordiation for the VII Corps and the theater support in King Khalid Military City (Saudi Arabia) in 1991. He served the VII Corps Forward Redeployment Chief of Staff in Damman, Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm and was responsible for redeployment to the USA and Germany of our forces. Robert’s service included the establishment and command of the Army Material Command Iraq in Balad during 1993, where the unit provided critical repair parts and logistics support to ground forces. He commanded the Army Material Command Forward (Europe) in Heideberg from July 2001 until his retirment in 2004.

VFW POST 4180

Brookwood graduate Justin Lansford made his way back to Snellville late last year during his recovery from injuries sustained in April 2012 when his vehicle hit a roadside bomb while on a recovery mission. Among injuries sustained was the loss of his left leg. With a seemingly indomitable drive and spirit, Justin is working through the physical therapy at Walter Reed walking upright, creating an independent life, working on a bachelors degree at Catholic University, and training as a rower for the Paralympic Games. His hope is to be part of the U.S. Team. Another busy day ... but now with an Olympic Dream. Looking for an athletic and physical challenge, he was inspired when he met 2012 Bronze Medal Paralympic rower Oksana Masters last year and began working out towards that making the U.S. Paralympic Rowing Team. He’ll be in Washington DC for a few more years; finishing his physical therapy as well as his degree. And look for him to make a showing as a stellar athlete embodying not only the Olympic spirit, but the American spirit as well.

The mission of the VFW is to foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts and to serve veterans, the military, and communities. Post 4180 has extended that mission to assist all Veterans and their families in the Snellville and Gwinnett County community, always putting the Veteran and his/her family above individual needs to provide assistance to them to receive their earned rights and benefits. Post 4180 exists to promote patriotism and love of country by recognizing youth through various schools and scouting programs, upport and recognize local law enforcement and fire fighting personnel for their selfless support throughout the community. The VFW and Post 4180 also raise money for many veterans causes.

A COMMITMENT TO THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED When the city’s operations moved to the new City Hall in 2005, the Memorial to Vietnam Veterans was also relocated, but a gas line to feed the eternal flame was not in the plans. Some of Snellville’s citizens are intent on relighting that flame while ensuring that our veterans are honored and their service memorialized. Their vision has brought about plans for a beautiful tribute to those who have served to protect our freedoms, honoring veterans from the Revolutionary War to those who still serve in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is a group of committed volunteers who are proud to be somebody in Snellville that will make this monument a reality. Among those who have contributed their talents and efforts to form the committee are (left to right): Mayor Pro Tem Tom Witts (Georgia Property Restoration), Ryan Hollandsworth (Hollandsworth Construction), Tommy Hill (Serenity Falls Watergardens), Robert McCann (Haines, Gipson & Associates),

Former Councilman Chad Smith (CAS Architecture), and Former Mayor Pro Tem Barbara Bender (Hamilton Financial PC). The memorial will be positioned in front of the Senior Center on the grounds of our City Hall. There will be a wall of water that falls in front of the bricks with veterans’ names on the wall. LED lights behind the water will keep the names and flame lit at night - so that they are always remembered. There are five poles supporting the flame - representing the five branches of our Armed Forces. The name of each branch will be etched onto the poles which are connected by rings representing each war that has seen U.S. involvement. The war will be etched onto the ring. Each support (branch) will touch each ring (war) and will rise out of a five-pointed military star. The cast stone will match city hall and the senior center. Veteran’s bricks are on the wall, public bricks are on the ground. When complete, it will be a beautiful tribute to veterans.

Come Celebrate 40 Years of SNELLVILLE DAYS May 4 & 5, 2013 Briscoe Park ~ Snellville, Georgia

Dedication of the park. May 10, 1974 at Briscoe Park. Mayor Emmett Clower and former Mayor Thomas Watson Briscoe The Snellville Days Arts and Crafts Festival started in 1974 as a one-day event held on May 10th, to benefit the construction of T.W. Briscoe Park. Snellville had until December of 1974 to raise matching funds for a grant for the construction. The Grand Marshal of the first parade was former Mayor Thomas Watson Briscoe, who served on the City Council and as the mayor in the 1960’s and 1970’s. He worked tirelessly on the development of the park on Lenora Church Road. The honorary Grand Marshal was WRNG radio (and later WSB) talk show host, Ludlow Porch. The festivities started with a concert at the boat dock from 8 to 11:30 p.m. on Friday, May 9. The parade started May 10 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church and ended at Briscoe Park at noon. The Jaycees sponsored barbecue chicken dinners at the park and there was an all day flea market, hot air balloon display, and a pigeon release. The park was dedicated at 3:30 pm.

Voted Best of Gwinnett for Local Festivals in 2012

One of Gwinnett County’s longest running festivals celebrates its 40th anniversary this spring, and it is right here in Snellville! Briscoe Park plays host to the Snellville Days festival on Saturday, May 4th and Sunday, May 5th. The festival kicks off on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Snellville Days Parade, starting at Wisteria Village and ending in front of City Hall. This year’s Grand Marshall is SGHS graduate Louis Williams, who now plays for the Atlanta Hawks. The theme for this year’s parade is “Happy 40th Birthday, Snellville Days. Remembering Our Past, Honoring Our Present, and Celebrating Our Future.” Over 20,000 visitors will enjoy a mix of entertainment, rides for children and over 150 vendors with everything from arts and crafts to traditional fair food at Briscoe Park. Admission to the festival and parking are free. The hours for this year’s festival are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The stage will provide live entertainment throughout both days of the festival. Saturday’s featured act is Jordan Rager, a country favorite, who returns for his fifth year at the festival. On Sunday the featured group is The Soul Purpose Band, a festival favorite, who performed several years during the 1990’s and returned to the stage last year. Jordan and Soul Purpose were immensely popular last year and demand was great for their return this year. Back by popular demand is Wildlife Wendy and her tropical birds. Festival goers are in for a special treat as the King BMX Stunt Show comes to Snellville for the very first time. Each will perform three shows each day.

WILDLIFE WENDY and her tropical birds provide a 25-minute performance where you have an up-close and personal encounter with the most entertaining species of the bird world. Crowds are amazed and laugh out loud at the antics of the talking and free-flight parrots, while the rarely seen African turaco captivates all! The show is for all ages and is fast-paced, fun, and includes on-stage guests from the audience.

THE KING BMX STUNT TEAM will provide a High Energy 30-minute Bike Stunt Show consisting of both flatland and ramp stunts. Keith King BMX Bike Stunt Show will amaze and thrill you with heart-stopping maneuvers just like the ones you’ve seen in the X Games and Gravity Games. Once again FUN FARE is providing a field full of rides for kids of all ages.

Nineteen-year-old JORDAN RAGER is a singer/songwriter; music is his passion. He has recorded several of his own songs, such as “Natural Born Charm”, “Man’s Man”, and “Don’t Tell Mama” and appeared as part of Team Blake on NBC’s “The Voice” last year. Jordan has many influences ranging from Jason Aldean, Brantley Gilbert, and Alan Jackson, to Lynyrd Skynyrd and AC/DC, but country music is what he loves to sing. Jordan plays at bars, clubs, and festivals all over the state of Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, and Alabama. Jordan brings his own band and shares his music with us as a five-year favorite at Snellville Days.

As the name implies, THE SOUL PURPOSE BAND is steeped in a true Soul/R&B tradition that offers the audience a combination of dance hits and soulful sounds from the 60’s to the 80’s, with an occasional tune from recent current pop charts. The Soul Purpose Band is an 11-piece band consisting of a five-piece rhythm section, a four-piece horn section and both a male and a female singer. This uniquely talented group of musicians knows how to keep the dance floor full. Soul Purpose performed several years at Snellville Days in the late 1990’s and again in 2012. By popular demand they are back in 2013.

2013 GRAND MARSHAL LOUIS WILLIAMS Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1986, Lou moved to Snellville, in 1997 and immediately made an impact on the hardwood, by playing AAU basketball. He took Snellville Middle to their first ever city wide championship and went on to play varsity at South Gwinnett High. As a sophomore, he scored a season high 50 points and in his junior year, led the team to the Georgia 5A State Championship. As a senior he was selected as a McDonald’s All American, Parade All American, Mr. Georgia Basketball and received the prestigious Naismith Award, signifying the nation’s top high school player. Lou originally committed to play at the University of Georgia, but decided to declare for the 2005 NBA draft. He was selected in the second round by the Philadelphia 76ers where he played seven years before returning home to play the 2012-2013 NBA season as a member of the Atlanta Hawks. Presently out with an ACL injury, Lou

will return to the court next season with the Hawks. In 2006, Louis founded The Lou Williams Foundation, Inc; his mother serves as Executive Director. The foundation provides support, empowerment and mentorship for youth in the sports community to prepare them for continued educational opportunities. He deems it necessary to give back to the community that has supported him greatly and sponsors a summer basketball camp at his alma mater each summer. “I was fortunate to be able to graduate from high school and go directly to the NBA; obviously, not everyone has that opportunity. I hope that I’ll be able to make enough of an impact that kids will understand that education is the key to becoming successful in life,” says Williams. Louis has just been named to 2013 Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame. He is the doting father of a precious 2- year old daughter named Jada Janine Williams.

Entrepreneur Summit Bolsters Business Community Rapidly gaining a reputation as Gwinnett’s most welcoming business environment, Snellville is positioned as a hotbed for start-ups and ventures. The year’s first two Entrepreneur Summits welcomed a crowd of current and future business owners to City Hall to develop and inspire their entrepreneurial plans. In the post-event polls, attendees raved that the Summit was a “tremendous asset to Snellville businesses” with 100 percent satisfaction for the relevancy of the keynote address and likelihood to recommend the event to others. Participants left certain they would return for future Summits, noting the program’s networking time, Business Toolbox explanation and peer advisory testimonials were especially beneficial. January’s keynote speaker, Dennis Daniels, presented “Promoting through Neuromarketing,” teaching how to target customers’ “buy button” in the brain. Local business owner Ruby Montgomery of Exposé Music Theatre and Dance School found the address especially helpful. “These are ideas you can apply immediately,” she said. The Commerce Club annually awards the scholarship to one graduating senior from each school who participates in one of the programs that help develop business leadership skills. Eastside Medical Center unveiled their new wing on Jan. 17, 2013, to a crowd of over 800 people. The new tower features advanced technology that includes a hybrid operating room (OR) suite, one of only two in the state of Georgia. Three floors are currently ready for use, with an additional three floors ready for expansion should they need the space. A large operating room for robotic surgery is among the new additions. Eastside Medical Center was the first hospital in Gwinnett to receive the da Vinci SI robot, which can perform minimally invasive surgery that reduces the risk of infection and recovery time. During the tour, hospital staff allowed visitors to try out the process, which includes sitting behind a machine and maneuvering the “hands” of the robot while viewing a threedimensional enhanced view of the operating area. According to Eastside’s Dr. Peter Mann, the machine measures whether any extra movements were used and how tight of a box your hands were in. One of the benefits of robotic surgery is that it offers doctors a rare chance to actually practice before doing the surgery. Across the hall from the robotic surgery room is a “hybrid operating room (OR)”. Only two of these exist in Georgia, with the other one at Emory Midtown. In this room, patients can be in the middle of surgery, and if they need a CT scan, it can be performed right where they are. The machine comes to the table like a robotic arm, and once the doctors are done with it, it retracts. It reduces the amount of radiation a patient is exposed to and maximizes the quality of the images, according to Dr. Takki Momin, a vascular and endovascular surgeon. “It brings me great pleasure to be involved in bringing this to Eastside,” said Dr. Momin, “where we can offer very sick patients the very best in treatment options in minimally invasive ways.” The patient rooms are equally impressive. Spacious and equipped with beds that raise up to a fully seated position, a recliner and a sofa, the rooms are designed with the patient’s comfort in mind. The rooms are ICU compatible, which means that if the patient becomes critical, they don’t have to change rooms. Among other upgrades is the ability to call your nurse’s cell phone from the hospital room directly, rather than going through a receptionist. While the hospital is only 31 years old, administrators want to make sure it keeps up with Snellville’s growth and offers residents the best medical care they can receive.

Community Garden to Open this Spring Gretchen Schulz Spring is in the air, which means it’s time to plant flower and vegetable gardens. And for a group of dedicated volunteers, this spring will be highlighted by the opening of the Community Garden @ Snellville where area residents will be able to rent garden beds on an annual basis. The garden is located in Briscoe Park at the intersection of Sawyer Parkway and Marigold Road. The garden committee expects to have approximately 25 beds available for rental the first year. Additional beds will be constructed as demand and funds allow. OUTDOOR FITNESS EQUIPMENT UNVEILED AT T.W. BRISCOE PARK Mayor Kelly Kautz’ trip to Turkey during the summer of 2012 with the Istanbul Center of Atlanta brought about a unique opportunity for Snellville’s residents looking to get in shape! Donated in their entirety by Aksa Park and Meyko Outdoor Fitness Equipment, the new outdoor fitness equipment was unveiled on March 4, 2013. According to Lisa Platt, Snellville’s Director of Parks & Recreation, the equipment will be placed in five different places along the walking trail “so that as a person is walking the trail, they can stop and utilize the equipment and continue walking.” While there are no plans to purchase additional equipment at this time, it is hoped that should the 2014 SPLOST be passed, improvements will be made along the entire fitness trail and some of those monies might be used to purchase more pieces from Aksa and Meyko.

Favorite Recipes From the Snellville Farmers Market Cookbook

SLOW-COOKER POT ROAST 2 tablespoons canola oil 3 pounds boneless beef chuck roast 6 carrots, peeled and cut in 2-inch pieces 1 large onion, peeled and cut in several wedges 1 (8-ounce) package mushrooms, washed, sliced Freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 (10.5-ounce) can cream of celery soup 1 (1.1-ounce) package onion soup mix 1 cup beef broth ¼ cup steak sauce Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the meat on both sides in the oil. While the meat is browning, prepare the vegetables. Place the meat in a slow cooker that has been sprayed with non-stick spray. Top the meat with the vegetables. Add pepper to taste. In a medium bowl, combine the cream of celery soup, onion soup mix, beef broth and steak sauce. Whisk until well mixed; pour over the meat and vegetables. Cook on high for about 2 hours, then reduce heat to low and cook an additional 4 to 5 hours. Remove the meat from the slow cooker and cut into 1/2-inch slices, cutting across the grain of the meat. Serve with vegetables and gravy. Note: I like to serve this pot roast with mashed potatoes. BUTTERSCOTCH BROWNIES 1 cup butter 1 (11 ounce) package butterscotch morsels 2-1/2 cups packed light brown sugar 3 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon vanilla 2-1/2 cups flour 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup chopped pecans, optional Preheat oven to 350º. Lightly grease a 15-inch x 11-inch x 1-inch pan. Combine butter and butterscotch morsels in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high in 30 second intervals stirring after each interval until morsels are melted, usually about 1-1/2 minutes. In a large bowl, combine brown sugar and eggs, stirring well. Add vanilla and melted butter mixture, stirring to combine. In a small bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt. Gradually mix into batter. Stir in pecans (optional). Pour into prepared pan and bake 30 to 35 minutes. Cool completely and cut into squares.
