In recent months, we have been inundated with the things that divide us - whether nationally, regionally or locally, we are bombarded with negativity claiming everything that is wrong and who is to blame – but the holidays tend to bring out the best in all of us. We tend to lay down our differences and remember what is truly important in life. I believe we all have more in common than we realize and this should be a lesson that we carry throughout the year. We all want to build a community in which our children can grow and thrive. Building a better community starts with each and every one of us and it has to begin locally by coming together and celebrating our common values … and not dwelling on our individual flaws. The holidays are a season for reflection on our traditions and the things that make our country and our community a great place to live; to remember and celebrate our family and friends and the values that we share. It is also a time to reach out to others with a kind word or helping hand and to be servant leaders in our community.

FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL AND UNIQUE ... SHOP LOCAL! Gail Lane Since moving to Snellville, our intentions to find our way to the mall for a dose of Christmas cheer seem to be consistently thwarted as we “start here”. We find most everything on our list amidst the retail mecca located in Snellville. In our family, Thanksgiving tradition includes turkey, pumpkin pie and plans for an early morning “out the door” on the Friday morning after as we made our way to the mall for the contact sport known as Black Friday Sales. My mom, my sister and I took turns with my Aunt Dale who, like many shoppers, trains for and plans the expedition with the precision of a General facing a formidable foe. The shopping season begins in earnest during that weekend with Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and then Cyber Monday. In Snellville, we’re blessed with some quality national chains to fulfill much of mainstream wish lists: Old Navy, Kohl’s, Belk’s, Target, TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, Ross, Best Buy, WalMart and Sams. But shopping local, supporting the entrepreneurs among the large retail franchises has rewards beyond helping out a business in our community. It is the treasures found in these little retail jewels that are the big reward for consumers. Finding truly unique SOMETHING for that really special SOMEBODY ... that truly special gift for those people in our lives that who deserve something just a bit more thoughtful. WHERE TO START? How about Play It Again Sports on Highway 78? Hottest gifts for Christmas include a full line of exercise equipment to help you keep those New Year’s resolutions as well as high-tech shoes to make getting in shape more colorful and comfortable. 32nd Annual Snellville Christmas Tree Lighting Enjoy the most wonderful time of the year at the 32nd Annual Christmas Tree Lighting in Snellville on Friday, December 6th from 5 – 8 PM Snellville residents and visitors will gather to celebrate a holiday tradition when the lights on the City’s 60-foot tall Christmas tree are switched on. To make the evening even more enjoyable, Snellville Tourism and Trade (STAT) has activities planned for children and adults on the Towne Green in front of City Hall. Santa and his elves will be in his tent taking wishes from children and posing for pictures. Andrew Watson Photography will be on site capturing that special moment with Santa. Snow will fill the air as Christmas carols are sung throughout the evening. You’ll be able to get warm around the fire pits, toast some s’mores, enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and even take a caroling hay ride. Activity tents will be available for children. The don’t-miss activities include craft build-it kits from Lowe’s, ornament decorating from Michael’s, and cookie decorating from Bill Rhodes Bakery. The main stage next to the tree will come alive with music from local choirs and just before the tree is illuminated at 7 PM, the crowd will light candles and sing Silent Night. Then Santa and Mayor Kelly Kautz will throw the switch and the tree will come alive with thousands of lights. STAT will be accepting canned goods at the Christmas Tree Lighting for the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry. Each craft activity, s’mores and hay ride requires one ticket equaling $1.00. You may bring two cans of food in exchange for one ticket for all activities. Food vendors will be on hand so don’t worry about going hungry. Tis the season for giving! Help others have a wonderful holiday!
Giving Hunger the Boot We are also having a “Give Hunger the Boot SHOE BOX DRIVE” this year. Since there are so many people in need, we are asking for your help in our community. The Southeast Gwinnett Co-op needs the following items that can fit neatly in a shoebox. Please fill a shoe box, shopping bag or other container with some of the necessities on the list and bring it with you to the Christmas Tree Lighting. The following items are needed: Toothbrush/toothpaste, deodorant, disposable razors, shampoo and conditioner, feminine products, band-aids, bars of soap, body wash, baby wipes. Other items needed that may not fit in the shoe box are: diapers for children size 1-6, pull-ups, disposable briefs for adults and depends, laundry, dish soap, napkins, toilet paper, paper towels. When you drop off your donation, include a business card or a slip of paper with your name and phone number on it and you’ll be entered in the “Give Hunger the Boot” drawing for a dinner for two, free appetizers or other great prizes. Making a difference at the SOUTHEAST GWINNETT COOPERATIVE MINISTRY Snellville Tourism and Trade had their first annual city wide Scarecrow contest benefiting the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministries. This was a great community event that engaged the entire city. Many families enjoyed driving around town with their children to vote on their favorite Scarecrow, which decorated the city during the month of October then enjoyed by all the visitors at the Snellville Fall Festival.

Snellville Arts Commission BRINGS HOPE AND CHRISTMAS CHEER
Kirk Buis Snellville Arts Commission Chairman The Snellville Arts Commission (SAC), in coalition with Artworks! Gwinnett and Habitat for Humanity, sponsored an exhibit on the lawn in front of City Hall during the month of October. It was called ‘Doors to Homes and Hope’ and featured doors that have been painted by local artists which were then auctioned to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. “It was an opportunity to help with a worthy cause as well as bring another art form to Snellville,” SAC Chairman Kirk Buis said. “We had a lot of help from Jon Davis and the Snellville Public Works Department, which made it a very interesting project.” The next project the Arts Commission is working on is a fundraiser to raise money for public sculptures in Snellville. With the help of Mayor Kelly Kautz and the entire City Council, the Commission is sponsoring a performance of A Christmas Carol at Summit Chase Country Club. All of the politicians have agreed to a cameo performance, and City Councilman Dave Emanuel has even taken a major role in the performance. There will also be a silent auction at the event The one-night only performance is Sunday, December 1st at Summit Chase. There will be a cash bar from 5:00-6:00 p.m., dinner from 6:00-7:00 p.m., results of the silent auction, and then the performance. Tickets are $35 for the dinner and show, and they must be reserved by calling Summit Chase Country Club at 770-979-9000.

The Entrepreneurship Academy at South Gwinnett YEAR THREE Scott Allen, Teacher

As we progress through the third year of our entrepreneurial adventure in The Entrepreneurship Academy at South Gwinnett, we’re excited with the growth of the program, and the successes achieved by many of our students. The creativity of the students, in combination with the new entrance policies into 1 our program are generating more opportunities, more focus, and more excitement as our students dive into the world of entrepreneurship. This year for the first time, we have had the chance to interview most of the students who 1 were signing up for our Entrepreneurship I class. Students entered the class knowledgeable in the elective they had chosen and eager to learn. Our classroom business, a custom labeled bottled water company, has been kick started with good creative executed in both Microsoft 2 2 and Adobe softwares. These focused students, in combination with a group of incoming freshman have stocked our classroom with 2 young entrepreneurs aplenty. We are looking forward to the declaration of their business ventures scheduled for November 11th. Our second year students are proven in their concepts through a year of business plan development and presentation to the Snellville Entrepreneurship Alliance Shark Tank. With venture capital earned and in hand, these young business owners are developing websites to capture that online presence. The business concepts they brought into their second year of study, are being fine tuned. Unique selling propositions are being defined and designed, too. We look forward to the year continuing as these young students learn the world of Wix, Weebli, and other online Website development programs, Quickbooks Pro for financial management, and the Adobe Creative Suite to provide the tools they need to merchandise, advertise and promote their products. A third year program is being offered this year as well to teach what it takes to grow a business once it is established. Suppliers and alternates are being defined, selected, and competitively quoted. Market position is being studied. Manufacturing processes are being looked at to determine efficiencies of production. Establishment of our third year program as a Work Based Learning opportunity for senior students is establishing the rule of responsibility towards business ownership as well. As our program ages, it matures and defines itself with the lessons both the students and the program are learning. We aim to continue the growth of the program, so that we can continue the growth of the students. Special thanks continue to be due to the City of Snellville, it’s Economic Development Department, and the people in the city government and in the Gwinnett County Public Schools Administration that support our program. Opportunities, businesses and students are all growing, as is the strength and health of The Entrepreneurship Academy at South Gwinnett High School.

Juan Hernandez, Student Throughout my years in the Entrepreneurship Program at South Gwinnett High School, I have learned the many challenges and tasks that not only occur when operating your own business, but the same adversity that occurs in daily life. The various factors and risks involved in entrepreneurship and managing your own business train an individual to learn how to adapt to situations, be flexible with the situations you face, and most importantly, network yourself within your peers and your community to create the best opportunities for yourself, rather than wait for them to happen. I’ve always been concerned about my future and where I will go to college or what I really want to focus with as a career, however with the skills I have learned in entrepreneurship over the last 3 years, I have learned that I can create my own future around the things and aspects of my life I want most. This is the key factor of the program that captivated me. As a creative individual, being in control of the way I learn and grow through managing my own business has provided me with tools necessary to walk through life confident that I can control and handle the most adverse and complex situations to always create the best possible outcome.

Creating Opportunities The Entrepreneur Alliance includes South Gwinnett High School (opposite page), Brookwood High School (top left), and this year, we welcome Grayson High School and Central Gwinnett High School (bottom left). More than 200 students in seven classes are participating in the Alliance. Within the four schools, these young entrepreneurs are working to start their own businesses which will create their own summer job by May, 2014.

On November 11th, Snellville welcomed the return of Councilmember Barbara Bender to the Council as she was sworn in with Tom Witts and Bobby Howard after their victories in the 2013 election. Tom, Barbara and Bobby join Mayor Kautz on the dais along with council members Dave Emanuel and Diane Krause. Kautz, Emanuel and Krause serve the citizens of Snellville with terms that will expire in 2015.

LOCAL ARTISTS TAKE PART IN VICE PRESIDENTIAL CHRISTMAS In June, Deborah Kepes, Owner & Director of Cobble Creek Studios received a call from Mr. Carlos Elizondo, the Social Secretary of Vice President Biden asking the students to create the ornaments for the Biden residence Christmas tree. The historic opportunity encompassed painting each of the 44 Presidents and a few American Icons on 4� x 5� canvases, framed in gold, and adorned with red, white and blue ribbon for hanging. The project was accomplished by the Cobble Creek Academy throughout the summer and fall at the CCS Academy Art Camp by 25 art students ranging in age from 7-17. They shipped during the week of November 10th, The project, themed Presidents & Vice Presidents, Future Past, will be showcased on the White House Christmas Special which will air on HGTV. CCS Artist Christion Rollin with his painting of Millard Fillmore.

SNELLVILLE’S AWARD WINNING FARMERS’ MARKET PREPARES FOR 2014 SEASON The 2013 Snellville Farmers’ Market season has officially ended, but behind the scenes, the administrative work for the market is a year-round task. “We’re now updating our policies and application for the 2014 season,” said Gretchen Schulz, a member of the Snellville Farmers’ Market committee. “Every season we seem to encounter new issues that require some tweaking of our policies. And 2013 was no exception. We continue to learn as we go how to better administer the market.” The policies and application for the 2014 season are expected to be available on the market’s website (www. snellvillefarmersmarket.com) in mid January. Potential vendors are encouraged to apply early to secure a booth at the popular market. “Last year we were placing vendors on a waiting list by February,” Gretchen said, explaining that the market does not place a limit on produce vendors who meet the market requirements as long as space is available. “First and foremost, we are a farmers’ market.” However, spaces for vendors wishing to sell baked goods, soap and body care products and craft items are reserved early in the application process. “We look for a variety of baked goods so we will only approve one—or two at the most—vendors who sell cupcakes,” said Marcy Pharris, another member of the market committee. “And all craft items sold at the market must have a relationship to food or gardening.”

The market season runs from the first Saturday in June through the last Saturday in September. Every year committee members receive requests from some vendors and customers to keep the market open longer. During the market’s second season the committee tried staying open through October, but found that competition from college football, kids’ sports and local fall festivals resulted in a limited number of vendors participating and a greatly reduced customer attendance. And it was very cold for the market volunteers who begin arriving at the Towne Green at 6:00 am to start the market set-up process.

Market volunteers are extremely proud that in this year’s American Farmland Trust competition, the Snellville market finished first in Georgia and first in the nation. The contest is based on entries received from market customers who pledge to spend $10 at their favorite farmers’ market. “We’re very proud of this recognition for our market and our community,” said Kurt Schulz, who coordinates the contest each year for the Snellville market. “This says a lot about the quality of our market, our vendors, and the enthusiasm our customers have for their hometown market.”

FAMILY TREE GARDEN CENTER OPENS PETE PIKE MUSEUM The Family Tree Garden Center Owner Dana Pike-Van Vlake’s vision to create a community and family gathering place is now expanding to include a tribute to her father’s efforts in beautifying Atlanta for more than 50 years. The Pete Pike Museum, a newly built addition to the garden center, spans the life todate of Pete Pike in photographs and historical artifacts. From his childhood on a farm, service in the Navy, working hard to make a living and introducing Pike Family Nursery to Atlanta, the museum’s storyline emphasizes the importance Pike places on building relationships, hard work and integrity. “The reason I wanted to build this museum is to inspire people, especially young people,” says Pete Pike. “There were a lot of times I was completely down, lost everything, I had nothing! But I never gave up. I had friends that helped me, a wife and family that believed in me and I worked hard with honesty and integrity. I want people to see that just because you are down, you don’t have to stay down, you can make your dream happen.” Pike’s hard work and treating people the way he would
want to be treated, Pike Nurseries became the largest independently owned garden center in the nation.

The City of Snellville, Snellville Veterans Memorial and Snellville Community Foundation hosted the Eyes of Freedom traveling art exhibit on November 4-6 at the Snellville Police Department. The Eyes of Freedom: Lima Company Memorial was created by Anita Miller, an Ohio artist who had a vision in which she saw the finished memorial and felt she was being asked to create it. With the help of the families of the fallen and the returned Marines of L3/25, the work was created and unveiled in the Ohio State House Rotunda in 2008, as the vision foretold. Although the paintings in this Memorial specifically depict the 23 fallen Marines from Lima 3/25, it has become much more; The Eyes of Freedom is for all who have answered the call to service. Behind each portrait we feel the honor and sacrifice of the thousands of men and women who have served our country, in every branch of the armed forces. Director of The Eyes of Freedom and a retired member of the Lima Company. Mike Strahle, a retired member of the Lima Company and Director of The Eyes of Freedom, saw the memorial unveiled in 2008. “We are very excited to bring a wonderful experience to Snellville,” said Strahle. For him, this mission is personal: he too was badly injured in the explosion that took six of his squad members; two more fell to enemy fire just days prior. The Memorial is meant to remember the Marines of L3/25, but also to honor all branches of service, past, present and future.It is delivered by by R+L Carriers. BAKED BEANS BANANA PUDDING 2 cups Heavy Cream 2 Cup of Half & Half 1 Cup Granulated Sugar 1-½ TSP Vanilla 4 ripe bananas sliced 8 Egg Yolks (separate whites and reserve)
2 Cups of Confectioner Sugar 3 TBSP Cornstarch ½ Cup Cold Water 1-½ TBSP Cream of Tartar
Combine heavy cream, half & half, granulated sugar and vanilla and bring to a boil. Reduce heat after reaching a boil.
1 #10 can of pork and beans ¼ cup of Sweet Baby Rays BBQ Sauce 2 TBSP Dijon Mustard ¼ Cup of Brown Sugar 1 TBSP of Black Pepper
1 TSP of Granulated Garlic 1 Cup of Cooked Bacon (Chopped) 1 Cup of Yellow Onion (Diced) 1/8 TSP of Liquid Smoke
Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix well. Pour into a 13 x 9 baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Chef Steven Chandler Summit Chase Country Club
Whip egg yolks. Slowly add hot cream mixture (1 cup) to yolks while whisking. Slowly add yolk mixture into main cream mixture while whisking. Make a slurry mixture with cornstarch and water. Mix into hot cream. Cook over medium heat until it thickens. Meringue – Whip egg whites until stiff. Add confectioner sugar and cream of tartar and whip until it forms peaks Layer Vanilla Wafers, bananas and top with cream mixture. Top with Meringue.
