Goodness, what a month!

First a new Prime Minister, then a New Monarch and a new Prince of Wales.

By the time you read this, it would be safe to say that millions of words have been written and spoken about Her Majesty’s life. Every news outlet will have published obituaries and tributes. It is not necessary for me to further recount the facts, but I would like to share my personal thoughts.

Like most people in the UK, I’ve never known any other British Head of State. Every stamp and coin I’ve ever used featured Her Majesty’s profile; every post box I’ve dropped my cards into is embossed with the ‘EIIR’ cypher and every state opening of Parliament during my lifetime (except 2022) was attended by the Queen.

Then there’s the thousands of personal appearances. From opening buildings and bridges, diplomatic meetings at home and overseas, awarding honours and of course her own Jubilee celebrations, the Queen’s presence touched many lives all over the world. And who could forget her cameo at the start of the 2012 Olympics or her address to the nation during dark times at the height of COVID?

It will be interesting to see how King Charles III changes the Monarchy over the coming years but at a time of considerable turmoil in the world, it is also no wonder that there was such sadness at the loss of Her Majesty.

A New Dawn

We look at the changing elements that will soon play themselves out in a very public way, as the Elizabeth II era assumes its cherished place in history.

It is doubtless that with a bittersweet heart King Charles III embarks on his new role as Head of State. Having waited 73 years to take up the post he was literally born for, His Majesty has long dreamed of this historic moment. And yet, the price of power comes at the loss of his greatest love, mentor, and ally: his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

And while Charles assimilates to a new life and role, this is not necessarily the only challenge he has to face, for the opinionated Prince must now become the impartial King.

Having waited in the wings for the past seven decades, it would have been ludicrous for the Prince of Wales to not only nurture opinions on society and the world-at-large, but to express them also. From environmental issues to a desire to revive grammar schools –and most recently a disdain

for the government’s Rwanda deportation plan – the Prince of Wales has not only never shied from letting his thoughts be known, often instigating change via his various charitable and passion projects.

The issue here is that a prince may have such hobbies and persuasions, whereas a king, in truth, must not.

One of the most abiding and best-known rules of the British constitution is that the monarch stays out of politics. This is the foundation on which the monarchy survives in a democratic society regardless of what personal gains may be made from wielding its enormous power, publicly or otherwise.

Thankfully, King Charles is a brave, sincere, grounded member of the royal family, who takes humility as a cornerstone of behaviour having seen such a lack of it in many of his

relations. He understands the next step in the line of Windsor is not in questioning what is right and proper, but more prioritising the elements of society that need his authority and guidance most, during what are difficult times for us all.

As king, Charles is responsible for carrying the weight of not just a nation, but the other 53 Commonwealth countries, across 14 realms, which now fall under his rule. He must be a champion of the people, cultivating pride when times are good, and courage when they are bad.

It is a mighty task, but one he is more than qualified for. He will undoubtedly be a very different monarch, yet what should reassure us all is the fact he has inherited his mother’s values, strength, and sense of duty.

Now, a new dawn has come… God save the King.

Money on my mind...the Martin Lewis column

He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers.

In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at whether it’s possible to still be green at times of real economic restraint.

None of us need reminding how tough this year has been, and while we’re all looking for the green shoots of recovery, that greenness has become another sticking point of late, with environmental campaigners looking to keep their own eco priorities live and real.

As consumers, we’re all pretty aware that products and services that are more organic, or better ethically sourced, or that contain a strong environmental edge, are typically more expensive, so that leads us to a potential conflict of choice – do we look after our planet, or do we prioritise the money in our

pockets?

The answer – from research I have been doing on part of my website, and a collection of other polls that pool data on this subject – is very much that green issues take a massive backseat when our backs are against the wall.

Now that’s not to say I don’t have a green conscience, or the average Joe in the street doesn’t work hard to preserve the planet, but the absolute truth is that in the vast, vast majority of cases – both at times of struggle and even when things are less chaotic –

individuals are not willing to make big sacrifices.

What I think is important though is that, in future, it would be nice if people are being incentivised to go green, and doing so means we are given all the support we expect from government. We expect tax cuts on fuel and a decrease in oil price to be reflected at the pump; we expect utility providers to play by the rules with clear billing and fair price schemes; we expect home insulation initiatives to really add up in the short-term, not 25 years down the line; and we expect new customer incentives to be accompanied by rewards for existing ones.

What’s more, the days of us feeling guilt-tripped into buying a green product over one that isn’t, are probably and hopefully over. Of course, we all want to get back to a place of economic and environmental prosperity, and I’m sure that will come, but our conscience to feed our families has been proven, time and again, to be stronger than anything else.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK, with around 55,500 women and 370 men diagnosed each year. The statistics are scary, but the more we understand about breast cancer, the better our chances of successful treatment.

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the breast tissue, when cells begin to divide and grow in an unusual and uncontrolled way. One of the dangers of breast cancer is how easily it can be spread to other parts of the body. This is due to the network of lymph glands close to the breast, which are part of the lymphatic system that runs throughout the body. Cancer cells that have broken away from the breast tissue can be carried by lymph fluid to nearby lymph nodes.

What are the causes of breast cancer?

Unfortunately, no one knows the exact causes of breast cancer. There are, however, certain risk factors which may increase a person’s chance of developing breast cancer.

Some examples of avoidable risk factors include lack of physical activity, poor diet, being overweight, drinking too much alcohol and undergoing combined Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). You’re also more likely to

develop breast cancer if you’re a white female, over the age of 55 or if your mother, sister or child has been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer. Other unavoidable risks include starting menstruation before the age of twelve, reaching the menopause after the age of 55 and having children at an older age.

What are the symptoms of breast cancer?

The most common symptoms of breast cancer include:

• A lump in the breast, upper chest or armpit

• A change to the skin, such as puckering or dimpling

• A change in the colour of the breast

• A nipple change, for example an inversion

• Rash or crusting around the nipple

• Unusual discharge from the nipple

• Changes in size or shape of the breast

See your GP if you notice a change to your breast that’s new or unusual for you.

Imagine your breast is a clock face

Gently press and move around the breast tissue in small circular motions across the entire breast

The survival rate for breast cancer is reasonably high, especially if you’re diagnosed early.

Fortunately, there are several different treatment options for breast cancer, most of which include a combination of surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapies. Your doctor will take many different factors into account when deciding which treatment is best for you, including how big the cancer is, whether it has spread and your general health.

What can I do to help?

Whether you’re suffering from breast cancer

Feel all around the breast, including under your arm and underneath where the underwire of your bra would sit

Make sure you check higher up, above your breast (as the ‘tail’ of the breast reaches up here as well)

yourself, supporting a loved one through their treatment or looking to raise awareness in your community, there are many ways in which you can seek and provide support in the face of breast cancer.

Charities such as Prevent Breast Cancer, Breast Cancer Now, Breast Cancer UK, Against Breast Cancer and the Pink Ribbon Foundation offer care packages, support groups, expert guidance and more to help people battling with breast cancer. You can also get involved in sports challenges, fundraising and volunteering initiatives, or donate to a breast cancer charity that resonates with you.

What’s on your Bucket List?

Recently, our Rebecca Robinson and our Head of Private Client, Lynette Viney-Passig took on the challenge of climbing Mount Snowdon! The motivation was to “tick one thing off the bucket list”!

Everyone has a bucket list, whether its wacky, wild, fearless or frivolous, most of us have compiled a list of things to do and/or places to see before we die. But what about the things you really should do before you die: things not as fun perhaps as doing a skydive or swimming with a dolphin but things that will bring you peace of mind now and order and guidance to those left behind.

Here are 5 things that everyone should do before they die:

1. Power of Attorney

If you become ill and are no longer able to deal with your own affairs who is going to pay your bills, deposit your cheques or drawer your pension?

Statistics tell us that we are going to live longer in general and that unfortunately means more of us will suffer illness.

Your Goal: to live with as much control and quality of life as possible. This includes giving someone the power to manage your affairs when you are no longer able to.

2. Write a Will

Many people plan on leaving money to loved ones but believe that their money will automatically go to the people they wish so do not write a Will recording their wishes. Without a Will, your assets will pass in accordance with the rules of intestacy – complex rules that dictate which family members can inherit. Alarmingly, under these rules your spouse many not automatically inherit your entire estate if it is over a specified figure. If you are not married to your partner they will not automatically inherit any of your assets. Putting a Will in place will ensure that those closest to you are provided for.

3. Name a Guardian for your Children Ensure that the right person will look after your children.

Also, if you have a disabled child you may wish to

consider putting assets into a Trust to ensure that after you death they can continue to claim any benefits that they are entitled to.

l partner (having inherited the whole estate) then requires care, most of the pleted in order to meet the cost of

4. Protect your Business

The continuity of your business is crucial to business planning – for business owners, not having a Will may result in difficulties regarding the continuing of the business after you death – shares may be sold, the business could be broken up or fall apart if direction is not given in relation to the day to day running of it. Careful Will planning can address such issues.

5. Think about Long Term Care

What will happen if you or your spouse needs to go into a nursing home? The Local Authority will only fund a certain amount of care – they will take contributions from your capital to fund your care and this may include having to sell your house.

Making adequate provision in your Will may allow you to protect some of your assets from third party claims such as these.

After a scorching summer, the thought of carving through powder snow and soaking up outstanding mountain scenery sounds like the perfect way to welcome in the winter months.

From the world-famous Rockies to the Alpine landscapes here in Europe, here are just a few of the world’s most popular skiing destinations.

The Alps

Spanning Italy, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Slovenia and Germany, the Alps are where the tradition of skiing was born. With some of the best skiing scenery in the world, picture-perfect chalets, gigantic ski circuits and a lively après-ski scene, it’s no wonder the mountains are a top choice for skiers across the globe.

Some of the top resorts include Val d’Isère in France, with its reputation for challenging black pistes, off-piste terrain and buzzing après ski scene, and Italy’s Courmayeur, renowned for its mountain restaurants and glamorous shopping. Then there’s the Swiss resorts – Zermatt with its gorgeous Matterhorn views and gourmet dining, and the more relaxed resort of Obergurgl. And that’s just touching the surface! With 1,152 ski resorts to choose from, the Alps truly have something for everyone.

Bulgaria

With excellent ski schools, cheap drinks, buzzing bars and gentle slopes, Bulgaria is the perfect place for beginners to learn to ski on a budget. Borovets and Bansko are the country’s largest ski areas – Borovets being the oldest of the two, located on the northern slopes of the Rila mountain range with pistes reaching 2,600m high. The resort’s scenic pine forests, lively atmosphere and traditional Balkan pubs make it a great spot for skiers looking to ski hard – and party hard too.

Further south, at the foot of the Pirin mountains, lies Bankso, which has grown to become Bulgaria’s largest ski resort. Offering 70km of well-groomed pistes for skiers and snowboarders of all ability levels, it’s popular with families looking for a more leisurely skiing holiday.

Canada

A bucket-list destination for skiers and snowboarders alike, Canada’s world-class slopes are famed for their knee-deep powder, immaculate tree-lined runs and unrivalled hospitality – not to mention their spectacular scenery and wildlife.

Repeatedly rated as North America’s top ski resort, Whistler is Canada’s pride and joy. With over 200 trails spread between the Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, linked by the famous Peak2Peak gondola, the resort sits at the higher end of the price scale – but it’s worth every penny. After a day on the slopes, kick back in the town’s mountain bars, indulge in some holiday shopping or soothe your aching muscles in a top-notch spa.

Japan

Japan is an underrated skiing destination, but one thing its 600 resorts are renowned for are their abundance of super light and extraordinarily dry snow.

The most popular ski areas are split across two regions – Hakuba on the southern main island and Niseko, Rusutsu and Furano in the northern island of Hokkaido. The resorts in Japan are worlds apart from European and North American resorts. Sample incredible food, from sushi and ramen to fried chicken and potatoes, and hop between Japanese onsens, natural hot springs that offer a traditional après-ski experience. However you look at it, Japan offers a skiing holiday that you just won’t find anywhere else.

Though there’s a real push toward full-electric vehicles, for many people a hybrid vehicle is a great fit. Combining an internal combustion engine with an electric motor and battery means a traditional engine to fall back on, but with the opportunity to benefit from the lower running costs that electrification brings.

Fortunately, hybrids have been on sale for a little while now, so there is a reasonable number available in the used market. Let’s take a look.

Lexus CT

Lexus has been using electrical assistance in its cars for quite some time now and has the technology down to a fine art. The CT, a slightly elongated hatchback with a typically sharp Lexus design, is a ‘regular ’ hybrid with a 1.8-litre engine and an electric motor and battery.

It’s exempt from London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone charge, too. Early, high-mileage examples can be had for around £5,500, but reasonable-mileage versions with plenty of equipment are around the £10,000 mark.

Toyota Prius

There are few better-known names in the hybrid world than Prius and it’s now a very tried-and-tested option. There are plenty of used examples, too, with prices starting from around £2,000 – though these will be earlier models with seriously high mileage.

Later models use a 1.8-litre engine – compared with the older 1.5-litre version – but you’ll still get a very respectable 70.6mpg combined, so it’s ideal for reducing fuel bills.

Volkswagen Golf GTE

Fancy something a little sportier? The Golf GTE aimed to combine Golf GTi driver involvement with the efficient running of a hybrid. With a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor with a battery, this plug-in hybrid can slot into everyday life easily.

First-generation cars – built around 2015 – can be had for as little as £12,000, though expect to pay slightly more for lower-mileage, higherspec versions.

BMW 530e

The BMW 530e could be a great more-refined option. It’s as comfortable and spacious as the regular 5, but has that efficient petrol-electric hybrid setup to help reduce fuel bills. Early 2018 models of the spacious 530e can be had for under £20,000, so it’s definitely at the top end of our price list. Push that budget higher and you’ll find lower-mileage versions, of course.

Mitsubishi Outlander

The Outlander was one of the groundbreaking hybrid models, and the plug-in hybrid is the go-to choice as it offers super-efficient motoring and the chance of seeing up to 156mpg providing you keep it topped up with electricity.

Prices are competitive, with second-generation cars built around 2015 standing at around £17,000. It’s a big, practical car for the money.

Sometimes, you want to spend an hour soaking in the bath with a face mask or take your time perfecting your make-up. But most days, you’re lucky to have five minutes to spend on your morning make-up, and a fifteen-minute face mask would need booking into your calendar.

Time-saving, multi-tasking products are your friend.

When time is of the essence, you need easy to apply makeup that won’t smudge and stays put. Kosas 10-Second Eye Gel Watercolor Eyeshadow (£16) ticks all those boxes and more. Just swipe the applicator over your lid, wait ten seconds and then tap to blend. You can do both eyes in under two minutes.

There are six neutral shades to choose from. Visit www.cultbeauty.co.uk to see how each one would look on your skin tone.

There’s no denying that disposable make-up wipes are convenient, but they’re terrible for the environment. Ogato’s Reusable Makeup Wipes (£9.99 for five at www.amazon.co.uk) are just as quick to use but can be washed and reused hundreds of times. You don’t even need a separate cleanser, so they’ll save you money as well as time.

Most of us know we should be applying sunscreen every day, all year around. That doesn’t mean we actually do it though. So, look for a moisturiser with SPF. Even better, make it a tinted one. My new favourite product is Morphe’s Glowstunner Hydrating Tinted Moisturiser (£18 from uk.morphe.com). It’s SPF30, available in fifteen shades, easy to apply and stays put all day. SPF, moisturiser and foundation in one, what’s not to like? Want a higher SPF? Go for Sunny Daze Mineral Moisturiser SPF50 by Bondi Sands (£12.99, www.bondisands.co.uk).

Sometimes, you need to spend time to save time. A professional gel polish, for example, might take a bit longer to apply, but it should stay chip-free for around three weeks. Likewise, an eyelash and eyebrow tint could shave minutes off your make-up routine.

off your make-up routine.

Is your hair in desperate need of a deep conditioning treatment but you just don’t have the time? Try amika’s Flash Instant Shine Mask (£20 from www.loveamika.co.uk). In just 60 seconds, it smooths the cuticles to boost shine and leaves hair feeling softer and less frizzy.

Late for work and don’t have time to wash your hair? Try a dry shampoo. Spray it on your roots, run it through with your fingers and watch the oil disappear. In the evening, wash your hair and plait it while it’s wet for effortless waves the following day. You’ve finally made it to the gym. You even made it into the shower. But you’re hot, sweaty and pretty sure your skin is going to rebel with a breakout tomorrow. You need Faace Sweaty Face Mask (£24). It’s designed to tackle post-workout spots, while soothing skin and replenishing moisture. Plus, it’s a leave-on mask, so there’s no need to hang around the changing room a moment longer.

Under a law that came into effect in April 2016, all dogs and puppies must be microchipped and registered by the age of eight weeks. Furthermore, a government press release issued in December 2021 stated that cat microchipping will also be made compulsory in the very near future.

The aim of this legislation is to relieve the pressure on local authorities and animal welfare charities to care for lost animals. Of course, the benefit for you is that microchipping your pet will make it easier for you to be reunited should they be lost or stolen, as your contact details are placed on an approved database.

How does microchipping work?

A tiny electronic chip is implanted under your pet’s skin, between the shoulder blades. It contains a unique number that correlates with your contact details. If you move home, or rehome your pet with new owners, you must update the details.

What if your dog isn’t microchipped?

If you don’t microchip your dog you risk a fine of £500 (and the same charge when cat microchipping becomes compulsory). You’ll receive a warning notice giving you 21 days in which to comply.

Current legislation means dog wardens and other enforcers, including community support officers, have the right to seize your dog and make sure it is microchipped, and to reclaim the cost from you.

Microchipping doesn’t need an anaesthetic as it’s no more painful than a standard vaccination. www.bluecross.org.uk

As we dip into the mellow days of autumn, it’s a good time to reach for the camera. The light levels are often perfect for photography in the garden. Capture those glistening spiders’ webs and moisture droplets that decorate leaves. Soak up every moment of the golden times when long shadows make great shots. There is generally less pollution in autumn due to cooler weather, and skies tend to be clearer. October can catch you out. There are days that feel like an Indian summer, with bright blue skies and sun that warms, but also unexpected frosts. Protect vulnerable plants by moving them to sheltered sites, or cover them in horticultural fleece.

During this magical month, don’t miss the petrichor! It’s a real treat, and is the scent of rain that arises from damp earth after it falls on dry soil. This is a time to savour the daylight, knowing it will be seeping gradually away. But rather than mourn the loss of longer days, there’s work to be done outdoors as you need to get your garden in order to make it winter-ready. Before leaves are filling up every crevice and corner, remember to cover ponds using fine mesh. It will stop the debris from falling to the bottom of the water where it will rot.

Stop and think before you cut things back during autumn pruning. Many plants have high feed value for garden birds. The seeds provide food and the leaves and stems offer shelter for birds, small mammals and mini-beasts. Leave them in situ if you can.

Collect seeds for propagation. Many of them can be sown right away, but some can be scattered later. Check the preferences of each type of seed, as some require ‘cold stratification’, where they need to undergo a cold period before they are likely to germinate. They include many acer trees, most shrubs such as cornus (dogwood) and forsythia, clematis and perennials including lavender, nepeta, sedum and rudbeckia.

This is a perfect pruning time for certain climbers and shrubs. Beware of cutting into old wood on lavender and rosemary, however. You can prune shrub roses and soft fruit bushes. Cut hedges without too much fear of disturbing bird nests and consider giving your hedge a mulch around the base. Always check before adding fresh wood chippings, however. Some newly shredded wood can change the pH value of the soil and others might deplete nitrogen levels in the ground underneath.

Lawn lovers will be in their element during October, as this is a good time to rake out the thatch and apply autumn lawn fertiliser. Trim the lawn edges to give it a crisp shape that should last until spring.

It’s time to plant some underground flower power while there is still warmth in the soil. This is the best bulb-planting month for spring-flowering beauties such as daffodils, crocuses, snowdrops, alliums and hyacinths. Tulips can wait until November, or even later if the weather is mild. This helps to avoid the dreaded tulip fire virus.

Teething grief

Seeing a baby or toddler teething; presents one of the biggest anguishes for any parent, yet there are some useful tips for detection, and to aid aches and pains.

Detection

1. Drool Rules

In babies, the appearance of drool – and lots of it – is a tell-tale sign that teeth are on their way. Many parents opt for the handy neck cravat to prevent clothes from getting soaked.

2. Chew Bad

Also keep an eye out for your baby gnawing or chewing on any available surface, with red and sore gums showing that there’s plenty of activity lurking below. A loss of appetite may also indicate dental pain.

3. Rash Dash

4. Hot or What?

Another tell-tale sign is a slightly raised temperaturethis can be anything up to 38 degrees.

Help

Teething may also bring out a rash, usually around the face, or a flushed cheek. This is, predictably, caused by the build-up of saliva and the fact your child has a permanently moist cheek.

Of course, we all look to quickfire solutions when our children are ill, but teething is something you have to let progress in its own time, so try to limit the discomfort.

Paracetamol and ibuprofen will take the edge off the pain, while a number of parents opt for teething powders.

In addition, a teething chew – usually made out of rubber or silicon, and which can be kept in the freezer for a great cooling sensation – will undoubtedly provide relief, with teething gel and even frozen banana offering those troubled gums a bit of light relief.

Serves 8 Takes about 1 hour

Ingredients

• 200g pistachio kernels, finely ground – use a spice grinder or food processor

• Zest and juice of 1 orange

• 200g bramata polenta

• 4 eggs

• 150g runny honey

• 200ml extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for greasing

For the syrup and decoration

• Zest and juice of 1 orange

• 75g runny honey

• 50g pistachio kernels, roughly chopped

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C / 180°C fan / gas mark 6, grease a 24cm springform cake tin with oil and line the base with baking paper.

2. In a large bowl, mix the ground pistachios, orange zest and the polenta together. Crack the eggs into another bowl and whisk in the honey, orange juice and olive oil until smooth.

3. Pour the wet mixture into the dry and thoroughly combine to a smooth batter, then pour the batter into the prepared tin. Bake in the oven for 40 minutes, until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean, then remove the cake from the oven and transfer it to a wire rack to cool in the tin.

4. Once the cake is cool, release it from the tin and transfer it to a large plate.

5. To make the syrup, stir the orange juice and honey together in a small saucepan. Place the pan over a medium-low heat and bring the ingredients to a simmer, stirring to fully combine. Immediately remove the syrup from the heat.

6. Using a fine skewer, prick a few holes into the top of the cake and pour the honey and orange syrup over the top. Sprinkle on the orange zest and pistachios to decorate.

This is truly a cake for everyone. Made with polenta and olive oil, it is both dairy-free and gluten-free Recipe extracted from The Italian Pantry by Theo Randall, published by Quadrille on 1st September, priced £26, with photography by Lizzie Mayson.

Even in a small home office or a shared space, you can create a working environment that functions efficiently and effectively – while also being a pleasure to spend time in. Desk decisions

Your desk should be at least 50cm deep (75cm is better), and wide enough for a computer and some paperwork, perhaps with drawers at the sides. Depending on room configuration, an L-shaped or corner desk may be best. Style-wise there are endless choices, dependent on budget and the room style. One option is a customised built-in work area, taking advantage of awkward features such as sloping ceilings, level changes, niches etc., while a middle ground is a modular system with elements combined as required. Sitting comfortably

A good chair is essential for preventing back problems and muscle strain. For some, a kneeling chair works well, while others prefer a saddle chair or a balance ball. However, for most people an ergonomic chair is ideal. Experts recommend a height-adjustable chair on wheels with a five-castor base, with a seat depth giving adequate leg support and a back rest providing lower and middle back support.

A desk with a view is always nice, and this home office has plenty of storage as well as a stylish and comfortable vibe. Storage solutions

Storage is vital and should provide room for expansion. A filing cabinet may be best, or stacking boxes, a shelf full of folders or plenty of shallow drawers. In shared rooms, such as an office in a bedroom, concealment may be important, so consider appropriating part of a wardrobe or cupboard to physically separate work and shut it away. Otherwise, choose storage that suits the overall room decor and that can be well-integrated.

Heat and light

A comfortable working temperature is important, and if the room is likely to suffer from extremes of temperature, consider a plug-in heater and/or fan or air conditioning. Good task and general lighting is vital – the more natural light the better. Desk lamps should be bright and easily adjustable. Make it your own Seek out furnishings that suit your home and your personality. Chain stores and independent shops sell home office furniture but there are interesting alternatives, such as old school lockers, a trestle resting on a pair of metal filing cabinets or a desktop made from blackboard. Add accessories to brighten up your day. Decorate and add finishing touches such as plants, family photographs and scented reed diffusers, making it a space where you want to spend time.

Any small table can become informal desk space for quick home admin, blending prettily into its surroundings. This image showcases the autumn/winter range of home office accessories from dunelm.com.

What Shall We Do with a Leftover Pumpkin?

Once The Halloween Celebrations Are Over

Halloween is an ancient festival with Celtic origins, traditionally believed to be the day on which the souls of those who had died that year progressed to the underworld. Halloween has gained massive popularity in the UK only in recent years, turning into one of the country’s biggest cultural and commercial events.

In 2021 we spent over £25 million on pumpkins, and we bought a total of 17 million of them. But the statistics on pumpkin food waste are frightening. According to the charity Hubbub, 18,000 tonnes of edible pumpkin end up in the bin each year – that’s the same weight as 1,500 double decker buses.

Instead of wasting these wonderfully versatile winter vegetables, re-use them. Here are two of our favourite recipes for you to try.

Pumpkin Soup

Ingredients:

2 tbsp olive oil

2 onions, finely chopped

1kg pumpkin peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks

700ml vegetable stock or chicken stock

150ml double cream

Method:

1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan, then gently cook the finely chopped onions for 5 mins, until soft but not coloured.

2. Add the diced pumpkin to the pan, then carry on cooking for 8-10 mins, stirring occasionally until it starts to soften and turn golden.

3. Pour 700ml vegetable or chicken stock into the pan and season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 mins until the pumpkin is very soft.

4. Pour the double cream into the pan, bring back to the boil, then purée with a hand blender. For an extravelvety consistency you can pour the soup through a fine sieve.

The soup can now be frozen for up to 2 months.

Pumpkin Curry with Chickpeas

Ingredients:

1 tbsp sunflower oil

3 tbsp Thai yellow curry paste, or vegetarian alternative

2 onions, finely chopped 3 large stalks lemongrass, bashed with the back of a knife

6 cardamom pods

1 tbsp mustard seed 1 pumpkin (about 1kg)

250ml vegetable stock 400ml can reduced-fat coconut milk 400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed

2 limes

Large handful mint leaves Naan bread, to serve

Method:

1. Heat the oil in a sauté pan, then gently fry the curry paste with the onions, lemongrass, cardamom and mustard seed for 2-3 minutes until fragrant.

2. Stir the pumpkin into the pan and coat in the paste, then pour in the stock and coconut milk.

3. Bring everything to a simmer, add the chickpeas, then cook for about 10 mins until the pumpkin is tender.

4. Squeeze the juice of one lime into the curry, then cut the other lime into wedges to serve alongside.

5. Just before serving, tear over mint leaves, then bring to the table with the lime wedges and warm naan breads.

LOCAL GROUPS and MEETINGS

Food Bank Donation Day!

Saturday 1st October 10am to 2pm at the Presbyterian Church Ruthin Wynnstay Road, Ruthin

Shed in Rhuthun.

Ruthin Men’s Shed has been created to help Men with their mental health and to stop guys feeling isolated and on their own during their bad periods, there is no actual correct way of running a shed it’s entirely up to the guys involved in the shed activities can be anything.

We have been meeting at Nibbles cafe for the past few months where the guys will have a brew and a bite to eat if they want to but we generally discuss anything that may be causing anyone problems in their life, we openly talk, laugh, cry about mental health and no judgement is made on anyone. We are part of the Resource group from Cai Dai Denbigh where people can participate in Gardening work or craft work, caring for nature and wildlife in general, there are two other groups we are also part of Repair cafe very similar to the BBC program and Library of things where the idea is you can borrow a gardening implement and return it when you have finished with it with a small donation. There is a lot a potential for further activities to be carried out by anyone coming along to any of the groups . Our email ruthinmensshed@gmail.com Rhuthun Men’s Shed The Skills and Happiness Exchange is our Facebook page.
