GREAT COMBE

BOWDEN

This renovation project involved the careful restoration of a mid-17th century ornate lath and plaster ceiling and fireplace overmantle. The main area of the ceiling was missing a substantial portion of its design, so F.H. Crocker & Co had to research other ceilings of similar dates to identify the missing motifs. Once this was done, squeezes were taken from the original patterns and moulds to create the replacement features.

The overmantle was also in danger of collapse due to its background lath and plaster and timbers being rotten and detached. We carefully framed the complete mantle, lowered it flat and strengthened the back of the coat of arms with plaster of paris, hessian and timber laths using a traditional fibrous plaster repair technique. Once this was complete, the mantle was then remounted on new supporting background timbers.
