Managing Director F.H. Crocker & Co. has been in the Lidstone family for the past 40 years, with Jonathan first dipping his toe into the plastering world at the age of just 15. Starting by helping out in the school holidays, he has since racked up 34 years of experience with the company, eventually taking the helm himself in 1994 as Managing Director. Jonathan is passionate about all aspects of decorative plastering and takes immense pride in his work, from breathing new life into damaged or neglected plasterwork, to painstakingly restoring original patterns and mouldings.
By accessing historic archives and images, we can breathe new life into damaged plasterwork.
After many years of neglect this grade II listed building, which is also a prominent landmark on Plymouth Esplanade, was restored to its former glory by F.H Crocker & Co in partnership with our parent company J.H. Lidstone (Plastering) Ltd. The external lime render was renewed where necessary and all of the existing architectural features were beautifully reinstated. Many of
the existing features were so badly eroded and weather-beaten that original master moulds had to be created from salvaged samples and by referring to the surviving original architect drawings. Four large decorative urns were reinstated to their lofty location - reproduced by referring to the only existing urn (which was also badly damaged), which had lain dormant in the courtyard.
This renovation project involved the careful restoration of a mid-17th century ornate lath and plaster ceiling and fireplace overmantle. The main area of the ceiling was missing a substantial portion of its design, so F.H. Crocker & Co had to research other ceilings of similar dates to identify the missing motifs. Once this was done, squeezes were taken from the original patterns and moulds to create the replacement features.
The overmantle was also in danger of collapse due to its background lath and plaster and timbers being rotten and detached. We carefully framed the complete mantle, lowered it flat and strengthened the back of the coat of arms with plaster of paris, hessian and timber laths using a traditional fibrous plaster repair technique. Once this was complete, the mantle was then remounted on new supporting background timbers.
Our team of craftsmen work alongside architects and restoration specialists to ensure that historic plastering can be enjoyed for generations to come.
