Movement was a key area of interest in my initial ideas relating to my primary user. I was interested in the bicycle chain mechanism, and the power one individual holds in momentum.

Maunsell Sea Forts in the Thames Estuary, built during the Second World War, then later adopted by pirate radio stations. I came across these early in the project when I was researching bunkers.

These images taken in Dungeness show my intial interest in industrial structures, and the user. The image on the left is a small make-shift den, this now reflects my user and his intentions of invention. A sense of play from the den, which may have been made by children is something my user retains is his experiments and inventions.

I have looked at functional industrial structures like oil rigs and scaffolding. I am interested in designing my structure to communicate its functions, and not hiding the services and other requirements.

These images, three from the site at different angles and times show the existing materials in use. From the site I have chosen to use corrugated sheet metal in my design.

Left, from Hackney House and the right from Hanway St show scaffolding and different methods of concealing, and protecting the temporary structure from weather.

The pavilion Humanidade 2012 by Carla Juaรงaba is a good example of a scaffolding structure suspending voids, I plan to use scaffolding to support designated areas for sensory experience.

The image on the left is from a farmers market in Brighton made from scaffolding and corrugated sheets. The top right image is from a shop at the Shoreditch Boxpark interior appropriating scaffolding into shelving units. Bottom right image is the roof of Hackney House, again made from scaffolding and corrugated plastic roofing. These are all materials and methods I plan to incorporate into my design.

These images of the Spanish billboard house show my intentions of the refined living space which my user would have, a small living space made from cheap materials, in this case O.S.B maintaining only the essential living requirements.

These images all from NASA’s Apollo archive, show the supporting structures of the launch pads. These structures are purely functional and heavily engineered. An asthetic I am keen to mimic.

I took these pictures during a technical studies tour of the services below the street at CSM. I have become increasingly interesting in purely functional objects and space like this. These tubes and pipes flow throughout the building un-noticed.

These images show an early model, quite rigid it its form. The bottom right shows Hugh Broughton Architects’ Antarctic research station, made up of steel frame modules. Similar to my model which functions in two seperate buildings.

The structure on the left designed by Peter Zumthor housing a piece of work by Louise Bourgeois, although I did not see this work until after I made my model it communicates a very similar intentions. The void within the framework/ skeleton. In my design this is a space for a controlled experience.

This is where I have started to re-look at movement, the images on the right are from the science museum. The image on the left is a small experimental model I have made over the Easter break.

Here I have started to look at the work of Constant Nieuwenhuys work on ‘New Babylon’ and as a point of inspiration I have made a small model attempting to display movement between two planes of experience. This will be an area for me to explore, how do I best transport secondary users between sculpted experiences.

These are some visual experimentations with overlaying and attempts at anaglyph 3D images of some models. I hope to experiment further into sensory experiences and specific areas of sense.

Top left is one of my drawings that is attempting to show areas of sensory experiance. Below is a photo form Cape Canaveral and a still from Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. The main image is from Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys. All these images show interpretations of control panels.
