A family of four who loves to entertain and play outside wanted to upgrade the rough exterior which they inherited with their new urban terrace in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The design is based on initial sun and light study that helps to determine where program zones—for sitting, sun bathing, day and evening entertaining, and terrace planting—would be located. The design of terrace, as seen in the final floor plan, reflects a simple patterned ground plane that reflects the clients’ desire for easily removable teak tile flooring and vertical a palette of orange and gray and planters that, when viewed from different viewpoints on the terrace, would animate the space and create visual interest.
