ENRICHING LIVES BUILDING FUTURES 1
2013–2014 / 2014–2015 ANNUAL REPORT
Our cause. Our children. Our future. The Children at the Crossroads Foundation was created in 1990 on the belief that economic circumstances should not preclude an eager and capable child from receiving a quality education. The Foundation seeks to enrich our community by significantly improving the academic achievement, self-esteem and life opportunities of school children by offering need-based scholarship support to students attending The Frances Xavier Warde School.

Dear Friends of CATC As the Children at the Crossroads Foundation (CATC) concludes our twenty-fifth year, we continue to pursue our mission of providing scholarships to eager and capable children in the Chicago area that are attending The Frances Xavier Warde School (FXW). We are delighted to report that 21 new CATC Scholars enrolled at FXW for the 2014-2015 academic year bringing the total number of students who have received CATC assistance to over 560. These children came to us from various Chicago neighborhoods and represent the diversity of our great city in every way possible; ethnic, religious and social economic. As you review this annual report, I hope you are inspired by the intelligence and passion for lifelong learning demonstrated by our students, alumni, teachers and staff. Their accomplishments are a direct result of your generosity and we thank you for all your support. As we look to our next twenty-five years, we celebrate the success we have achieved in the past and the lives we will touch and inspire in the future. Sincerely yours,

Our Stories Geomele Moya FXW ‘99, Loyola Academy ‘03, Boston College ‘07 For 29 year-old Geomele Moya, becoming a teacher meant getting to share those ‘aha moments’ with her students. Moya has been teaching since graduating from Boston College in 2007, first with Teach for America, and more recently at Gary Comer College Prep on Chicago’s south side. Moya says that she often thinks about her own experience at FXW when teaching her students. “We were constantly learning, even if we didn’t think we were,” says Moya. “Our teachers had the energy and the passion to find ways to relate to us and to make us interested in what they were teaching. As a teacher, I know how difficult that is,” she says. Moya works with students who are often a grade level or more behind. “I see how FXW helped me with the fundamentals, such as giving me the grit and determination to keep trying when I didn’t figure things out the first time,” she says. “The kids I work with don’t have this. They have grit in life, but they cannot apply those skills to learning.” “FXW [also] taught us to understand the world around us, and to try to make it a better place,” she says. “Teaching is how I give back to those who come after me.” Moya only recently learned that her experiences at FXW would not have been possible without the support of a CATC scholarship. Moya’s step-father passed away when she was in the 4th grade. “As a single mother, my mom would not have been able to provide us with an FXW education without scholarship support from CATC. I am so grateful for my FXW education. As a teacher, I am committed to the idea that everyone deserves an awesome education, regardless of financial circumstances,” she says. Today, Geomele continues to be part of the FXW community as an active member of the Alumni Planning Committee.

Sean and Molly Durkin Parents of Patrick (FXW ’11) and Jack (FXW ’08) Sean and Molly Durkin have been supporters and advocates of the Children at the Crossroads Foundation (CATC) since they enrolled their eldest son, Jack, at FXW in 1999. “CATC really embodies what FXW is all about,” says Molly Durkin, an alumni parent and member of the CATC Board for the past five years. “It makes it possible to offer some form of scholarship support to 30 percent of the students at FXW,” she explains. “And that, in turn, ensures a truly diverse student experience.” “We really value the experience that both our boys had at FXW,” says Molly. “They interacted with children from all backgrounds,” she continues. “Going to school in an urban environment exposed our children to different things than they would have experienced in the suburbs,” added Sean. Molly noted, “Our oldest son, Patrick, is a junior at NYU. He didn’t skip a beat when he went away to college. His experience at FXW prepared him to embrace the diversity of student backgrounds that he [encounters in classes and student experiences] at NYU every day.” “FXW had an impact on our approach to parenting, as well,” she says. “We learned to let go and let our kids experience the world. That is a valuable gift,” says Molly. “We view it as our privilege to raise funds for CATC to support more kids who want to attend FXW,” says Molly. “It is our hope that FXW continues to embrace diversity, and that once kids graduate that their parents continue to support FXW through CATC,” she says. “FXW was a gift that we gave our children [and supporting CATC is a great] way to give back to help other children have that same gift.”

Adriana Moreno FXW ‘02, Cristo Rey ‘06, Spring Hill College ‘10 Before starting at FXW in the first grade, Adriana Moreno had never met anyone who had graduated from college. “Most of the students from my neighborhood in Pilsen didn’t even expect to graduate from high school,” says Adriana. Adriana’s mother, Concepcion Rodriguez, was working as an administrative assistant at her local parish when she learned of FXW from a friend. She was initially hesitant to send her children to FXW. “I was intimidated by the amount of affluence,” she says. “We came from a working class background and I didn’t know how the other children and families would perceive [us].” Once enrolled at FXW the Morenos were immediately welcomed into the community. “I didn’t feel any different from my friends who were not on scholarship,” says Adriana. “I was going to school with kids who were from the one percent and those who came from almost nothing, but you wouldn’t know it. We didn’t see money or color, we only saw friends,” she explains. “After I left FXW, I realized what a privilege it was to go there,” says Adriana. “I was very well-prepared for high school and college. The teachers at FXW taught me that I should not settle for just being good, that I should aim for being great. I learned that there is a whole world out there that is bigger than Pilsen, bigger than Chicago — and I was ready for it,” she says. After graduating from Spring Hill College, Adriana spent two years teaching English in Santiago, Chile with the Jesuit Service Corps. She then returned to Chicago and taught at her local parish school, and more recently, as part of FXW’s extended day program. She plans to continue her higher education, and has recently been accepted into the Masters in Public Service program at DePaul University. 7

2015 Annual Scholarship Dinner Celebrating 25 Years of Generosity and Impact Peg and Steve Lombardo and Mary Reiling were honored with the Founders Award and Heart of the Crossroads Award at our Annual Scholarship dinner on May 8, 2015. The Lombardos were longtime benefactors of CATC as grandparents of current students and their daugther’s work as an FXW teacher. For Ms. Reiling, her years of service as Head of School of FXW gave her direct opportunities to work with CATC in their mission of supporting students with financial need at the school. More importantly, her work in growing and leading the community of FXW, for nearly 10 years, highlights her service and impact to the school, its students and families. In addition to recognition of these honorees, FXW alumna and scholarship recipient, Carla Lynn Smith ’99 shared her personal story with guests. The evening also celebrated CATC’s 25th anniversary and recognized FXW alumni and past CATC scholars and families. The dinner, which was organized by Co-Chairs Pamella Capitanini and Pam Farley and their dedicated volunteers, raised over $400,000 for CATC scholarships and hosted a sell-out crowd of 450 guests at the Four Seasons Chicago. Alumni Giving Back The 25th Anniversary Alumni Scholarship Fund In honor of FXW’s 25th Anniversary, alumni were asked to help pave the way for the boys and girls following in their footsteps by making a donation to the Children at the Crossroads Foundation. This was the first time Alumni were collectively asked to donate to their alma mater. Through their direct gifts or financial participation at events, they were able to raise more than half of one full scholarship. We congratulate and thank them for supporting and investing in the future of an FXW student. Generosity 2013 Golf Outing, Generosity on the Green 204 golfers and friends gathered at Harborside International Golf Course in September 2013 for a day of golf and philanthropy. The event sported the first ever ladies only activities. Gals on the Green included an early morning golf lesson, manicures and mimosas and ended with lunch. After a warm weather round of golf, our guest golfer, Chicago Bears legend, Mr. Dick Butkus, joined our attendees for cocktails and dinner. The evening ended with a viewing of the season opener of Monday Night Football. What a great mix of Greens and Gridiron! We would like to thank all who came out to support us that day. Due to the generosity of our event sponsors and donors, $164,000 was raised for CATC scholarships. Special thanks to event chairs Scott Hanlon, DJ Romano and their committee members for organizing such a great event. Ways to Give Donors to the Children at the Crossroads Foundation (CATC) are essential partners in our mission – generous individuals, corporations and foundations who also believe in a world where children are empowered to reach their full potential. There are many ways to make a tax-deductible gift to CATC. No matter which method you choose, your support is deeply appreciated.
Direct Gifts Direct monetary gifts are accepted in the form of checks, charges or money orders. Payments can be made to the offices of Children at the Crossroads Foundation or visit our website www.catc.org to donate online. Please contact a development officer for more information on giving or making a pledge.
Gifts of Stock The Children at the Crossroads Foundation accepts gifts of stock held at a brokerage house or in certificate form. Instructions for giving stock or bond can be accessed by visiting http://catc.org/ways-to-give/giving-to-catc/
Matching Gifts Under our Matching Gifts program, your employer may double or even triple your gift. The Children at the Crossroads Foundation Matching Gifts Program will help you to complete the necessary paperwork to request a matching gift from your employer. Once the paperwork has been filed, we will follow-up with your employer to ensure that your gift is matched.
Planned Gifts Wills, charitable remainder trusts, and life insurance policies offer the opportunity for leaving a lasting legacy to benefit future CATC scholars, while providing the donor with income, tax, and personal benefits.
Gifts-In-Kind To make a donation of goods or services rather than cash or appreciated property please contact Kymberly Marrinson, Director of Development at 312.268.2567.
