AT THE CORE OF EDUCATION

MISSION The Frances Xavier Warde School is a Catholic elementary school in downtown Chicago that provides an academically excellent, values-oriented education to students of all ethnic, religious, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds in a child-centered urban environment. As a keystone of its diverse community, The Frances Xavier Warde School provides need-based scholarships to 30 percent of its students. The Frances Xavier Warde School partners with its families, nurtures faith development for its Catholic students, and engages all its students to learn about and respect other faith traditions. The Frances Xavier Warde School uses a rigorous curriculum that enables students to grow, clarify their values, and develop decision-making skills and a sense of responsibility for themselves and the world they will inherit.

To instruct is an easy matter, but to educate requires ingenuity, energy and perseverance without end. –M Frances Warde

LETTER FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL & BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIR It is with a spirit of gratitude and pride that we share with you this FY14 Annual Report. This publication is about the many people who care deeply about The Frances Xavier Warde School (FXW). Its pages are filled with stories of committed and talented faculty and staff, students whose lives are enriched by unique classroom and extracurricular experiences, and the impact of support from our donors and benefactors. These are very exciting times for FXW, with our school reaching its milestone 25th year during the 2014-15 school year and more importantly a moment of great success. FXW is enjoying capacity enrollment, students are educated by passionate faculty and staff, and we are led by an Administration and Board of Directors committed to preserving our core values and traditions as we embark into the future. We are deeply grateful to all of our loyal supporters who shared our journey last year, parents of current students, and our many donors and volunteers whose gifts, large and small, have made all the difference in helping us achieve so much in FY14. Thank you again for the many ways you have supported us in the past and for your continued loyalty in the future. Sincerely,

Mary Reiling

THE YEAR IN REVIEW While we remained true to our mission of fostering intellectual, spiritual, social and moral development of our students, we also continued to evolve to meet the challenges of a changing world. We further integrated technology with our traditional pedagogy, we enhanced our curriculum to meet new Common Core State Standards and we continued to provide resources to meet the diverse learning needs of our students.

perform in the top percentiles on standardized tests. We have some of the highest admission rates to the most selective high schools in the Chicagoland area. Our students go on to attend the top colleges and universities in the nation. Why, one might ask, would FXW consider changing their very effective formula for success?

“One of the key differences we have seen is in the timing of student-acquired knowledge,” says 5th grade social studies and science teacher, Liz Mason. “Before aligning with the Common Core, we would expect our fifth graders to be able to research and write a full page on a subject, pulling quotes from the primary sources

ATHLETICS & CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMS At FXW, we believe that the development of the total person results from a balanced approach to growth in all areas. We encourage students to not only excel in academic achievement, but also participate in a variety of co-curricular experiences which shape character and develop social and interpersonal skills. Whether on the stage, in the classroom, on the playing field or through Extended Day and other club activities, together we celebrate each child’s gifts, talents and interests.

the community at large. Across grade levels, students undertake numerous service-learning projects. The focus in each grade builds a comprehensive program that takes students through different levels of service and areas of need and impact. Our youngest students spearhead a Thanksgiving food drive while our primary and intermediate service projects range from blanket making to visits with the elderly at Warren Barr. In 2013-2014, following the devastating tornados in Central Illinois our 8th graders felt compelled to take action. After arranging a supplies and toy drive they traveled to the area to deliver. They spent time with local children bringing a bit of relief around the holiday season. Principal Jackie Miller reports that FXW students were affected by seeing firsthand the destruction caused by the tornado. “This type of trip is important service as they learn to empathize with others, she added.

THE FXW COMMUNITY FXW is a joyful and ever growing community. Its members – current students and families, alumni and past parents, faculty and staff — are closely-knit, collaborative and diverse.

For this college crowd, the afternoon of bowling and nonstop reminiscing was a great way to reconnect with FXW. Former teachers, Annessa Staab, Rebecca Ward, Katherine Lavin and Jessica Lopez also surprised students at the event.

Alumni Give Back A special thank you is extended to everyone who participated in our alumni service and volunteer events throughout FY14. From preparing and serving meals at Ronald McDonald House, to volunteering at the annual Ultimate Family Playdate and Children at the Crossroads Scholarship Dinner, our alumni made a difference in our local community and at FXW. Alumni Camaraderie The FXW Alumni Planning Committee continued in its second year with new events and communications to connect with alumni. From a continued presence on social media outlets, supporting our partner parish, Old St. Pat’s at the annual Block Party, or hanging out to watch local sporting events together, alumni have stayed connected to FXW and each other. 8th Grade Welcome to the Alumni Association In conjunction with the annual 8th grade graduation luncheon, the Alumni Association welcomed the class of 2014 into the Alumni Association with messages from other alumni and a small welcome gift.

GIVING ANNUAL FUND The Annual Fund Program was once again a bright spot on FXW’s philanthropic horizon. “We focused on educating FXW’s constituents about the importance of annual fund gifts through print appeals, electronic media, social media and a rebranded Annual Fund campaign – Annual Fund first,” notes Kymberly Marrinson, FXW Director of Development. “Many people were not aware that annual fund contributions are a vital and necessary source of support for all aspects of the FXW experience – from academic programs to competitive compensation and professional development for faculty to maintaining our two campuses.” Marrinson also encouraged all members of the FXW community to get involved at any level rather than not giving at all. We thank all those that supported the Annual Fund. By the end of the fiscal year, the Annual Fund raised over $560,000. GALA 2014 My Kind of School A snow storm on March 1, 2014, did not stop the nearly 875 guests from stepping out to celebrate FXW, My Kind of School. The annual dinner and auction at The Marriot Magnificent Mile, which featured dinner, dancing, silent and live auctions and paddle raise, generated over $501,000 to continue to make the FXW experience possible. We owe a debt of gratitude to our countless volunteers and especially Gala Chairpersons, Aimee Daley, Amy Freshwater, Amy Honney and Teri Montes, for making this year’s Gala such a phenomenal success. CHILDREN AT THE CROSSROADS FOUNDATION Founded in 1990, the Children at the Crossroads Foundation (CATC) supports FXW’s mission of economic diversity through endowed and annual scholarship funding. Through the generosity of corporations, foundations and individuals, FXW receives funding to offer need-based scholarships to 30-percent of our current population. Many FXW families participate in CATC development efforts by playing in the annual golf outing, making contributions to the Scholarship Sunday Appeals, and attending the annual Scholarship Dinner and Ultimate Family Playdate or other events throughout the year. The FXW community is grateful for CATC’s partnership and support. For more information about CATC visit www.catc.org.

Parents at the Heart (PATH) Parents at the Heart (PATH) is a committee that supports the mission of the school by working with faculty, staff and families to enhance and encourage spirituality through personal support and community building events. Each class has a parent room representative that works with the teacher to organize support to families during times of illness, death, births and any life-altering event where the family could use a Good Samaritan. The committee also hosts four key family events each year: Fun Fest, Grandparents’ Day, Mardi Gras and the Mothers’ Day Luncheon. Chairs

Living the Legacy Living the Legacy is an annual community wide service project which seeks to honor the School’s namesake, Mother Frances Xavier Warde. Her tireless efforts on behalf of those in need inspire current students, families, faculty and staff to honor her legacy by completing a designated total of service hours. For the 2013-2014 year, FXW set a goal of completing 5,000 hours of service. Through the hard work and determination our students, we completed over 6,000 hours of service! Chairs

WAYS TO GIVE SUMMARY FXW, like most independent schools, relies on your support to sustain its academic programming, provide for facilities maintenance and retain outstanding faculty. Tuition does not cover the full cost of an FXW education and we turn to our entire community for involvement and support. With your continued generosity, we are able to provide the unique programs and support the faculty and staff who make The Frances Xavier Warde School experience special. We invite you to join us in our fundraising efforts especially through your support of: • The Annual Fund, the cornerstone of our fundraising efforts. • Gala, our annual benefit dinner and auction. • Children at the Crossroads Foundation (CATC), an independent 501(c)3 charitable organization that supports FXW’s mission of economic diversity through endowed and annual scholarships. For more information on how you can give to FXW visit www.fxw.org/supporting-fxw. The Frances Xavier Warde School is entirely self-supporting and does not receive subsidies from the Archdiocese of Chicago or partner parishes. As a 501(c)3, not-for-profit institution, gifts to The Frances Xavier Warde School (Federal Tax ID#27-0259853) are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. All gifts made between July 1 and June 30 are recognized in our Annual Report and distributed annually.

Although every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this Annual Report, we realize that errors may have occurred. If your name has been omitted, misspelled, or incorrectly listed, please accept our sincere apologies and notify us of the discrepancy so that we may correct our records. Please contact us with corrections by contacting Kymberly Marrinson at (312) 268-2567 or marrinsonk@fxw.org.
