2013 Annual Report

Message from our founder

The year 2013 has been one of the most rewarding and exciting years since I first arrived in Cambodia in 1993, exactly twenty years ago. It has been a rewarding year, because I have watched with pride as Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) has continued to thrive and grow under the management of the talented and dedicated Cambodian staff. Designing and securing the funding for the new neonatal ward was one of their many improvements. More importantly, even with their impressive successes, our original goal of “compassionate care” is still in the heart of every doctor, nurse, and staff member as they care for the children of Cambodia. I am so proud that AHC has become the premier children’s hospital in Cambodia, but I am even more proud that we continue to treat each child as if he or she was our own. It has been an exciting year, because we are “expanding the dream” by bringing this compassionate care to another country, Lao PDR. In November of 2013, we had the official ground breaking ceremony to begin construction of Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) in Luang Prabang. This ceremony was attended by leading Laotian officials in the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Buddhist monks blessed the ground in a moving and beautiful ceremony, and many of our dedicated and generous supporters were able to attend. Please enjoy the video of the ceremony on our website at www.fwab.org/currentnews. As we expected, there have been considerable challenges in going to a new country and creating a new children’s hospital of international standards. But I am happy to report that our team continues to meet these challenges. Meeting these challenges has truly made me feel young again. I am so thankful for the continued dedicated support of the Friends’ staff, our Board of Directors, AHC, and our team on the ground in Luang Prabang. And I am especially grateful to our donors and supporters who have joined us on this adventure to “expand the dream.” — Kenro Izu, Founder and Honorary President

Message from our BOARD CHAIR

A great deal has happened at Friends Without A Border (Friends) over the last 12 months – all positive. We transferred AHC to local management, we initiated the construction and development plans for LFHC, and we continued to strengthen our financial position and management team.

The financial challenge of creating a new children’s hospital in a new country is a daunting one, but I am happy to report that our donors are both excited and supportive of our newest project, LFHC.

Our financial status remains stable and on target to meet our obligations both now and in the future. Detailed financial statements are always set forth on our website at www.fwab.org/financials. Friends continues to enjoy a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, the leading watchdog and evaluator of U.S. charities. Friends has received a fourstar rating since its first evaluation six years ago. Less than 3% of all charities achieve this impressive milestone. These successes could not have been achieved without our dedicated and generous supporters. The financial challenge of creating a new children’s hospital in a new country is a daunting one, but I am happy to report that our donors are both excited and supportive of our newest project, LFHC. We are grateful to the many supporters listed in this Annual Report, keeping in mind that many of our recent donors will not be listed until the Annual Report for next year. It is our unwavering commitment to make LFHC the finest pediatric teaching hospital in Laos. We know from direct experience that this is no small challenge. We can only accomplish this goal with your continued financial support. I invite you to visit our website to learn how you can continue to support Friends and to help us achieve our goal that “every child has the right to a healthy and loving life.” — Michael Stern, Board of Directors Chair

Message from our executive director

The year 2013 represents the 20th anniversary of when Kenro first arrived in Cambodia. During those twenty years, we have faced both exceedingly difficult years and amazingly successful years. Certainly 2013 will stand out as one of the most memorable. 2013 was the first full year of AHC being managed by the Cambodian leadership. And 2013 was the launch of LFHC. Two remarkable events in the history of Friends. Without a doubt, Kenro remains the inspirational leader of Friends. But if you know Kenro, you know that he will be the first one to say that these successes are a team effort. This team includes our Board of Directors, the Friends staff, our team on the ground in Luang Prabang, and all of our amazing supporters. But I would like to take this opportunity to give particular thanks to another component of the team, the men and women of AHC. When we first explored the feasibility of building a new children’s hospital in Laos, we were warned by many experienced NGOs that we would face overwhelming governmental, bureaucratic, and cultural difficulties in trying to start a hospital in the Lao PDR. Fortunately, although there continues to be a number of challenges, the cooperation of the Lao Government and Ministry of Health has not been one of the challenges; and the reason for this has a lot to do with AHC. Very early in the strategic planning for LFHC, Friends invited certain leaders from the Lao Government and Ministry of Health to visit AHC in Siem Reap, Cambodia. It was no surprise that the Lao leadership was extremely impressed with the sophistication of medical care as well as the reach and success of the Community Outreach Programs in the Province of Siem Reap. But what seemed even more impressive to these officials was that the medical care and outreach programs were being organized and operated by the Cambodians themselves. The Lao officials recognized that they too could have such a program in their own country, and they welcomed Friends with open arms. Friends was one of the quickest approved NGOs in recent history, and so was the Memorandum of Understanding with the Lao Government for the construction and operation of LFHC. Looking forward, we at Friends are so grateful that the leadership at AHC is committed to work with us in the training of Laotian doctors, nurses, technicians, community healthcare workers, and management team. Although LFHC will also have world class instructors from such countries as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan, we are confident that the training received from the talented personnel at AHC will greatly increase the speed and quality of our training programs. Thank you AHC!

friends events New York Gala

Friends of Friends

Over 200 guests attended the 11th Annual Friends Gala in April, and helped raise over $270,000 to support healthcare programs in Cambodia and Laos. The theme of the Gala was “Celebrate! Celebrate! Two Big Milestones!” to commemorate achieving two goals: the independence of Angkor Hospital for Children, and the start of a new pediatric hospital in Laos. Guests enjoyed a beautiful Apsara dance by performers from Cambodian American Heritage, Inc., and Arn Chorn-Pond joined us again and performed two lovely Cambodian songs with his group The Waterek Ensemble.

On October 19th, 2013, Friends of Friends New York/New Jersey held their annual dinner/dance fundraiser for the 13th year in a row. They raised over $27,000 for Angkor Hospital for Children while celebrating Cambodian culture with delicious food, lively music, and unique auction items.

Friends was proud to present the third Healing Cambodia Award to Dr. Helen Ibbitson Jessup and Friends of Khmer Culture, Inc. (FOKCI). Dr. Jessup founded FOKCI in 2000 to support the art and culture of Cambodia, and to foster the development of Cambodians so that they can become the guardians of their own heritage. Friends also recognized Tetsuo Kodaira/Restaurant Tokyo, Thana Nop Lee, Amy Farges, Chazz Levi, and Trudi Oothout for their many years of dedication and support with the Best Friend of Friends Award.

Friends Photography Auction The Annual Friends Photography Auction is the signature event of Friends symbolizing “Art Can Make a Difference”, and has raised over $2 million since 1997. The 16th Annual Friends Photography Auction was held on December 10th. Over 250 photography enthusiasts joined Friends to bid on over 150 pieces by established and emerging photographers. With prints from artists like Annie Leibovitz, Steve McCurry, Daido Moriyama, Herb Ritts, and Hiroshi Sugimoto, the event raised over $170,000 for children’s healthcare. The 2014 auction will be held on Tuesday, December 9th at Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City. For more information visit the photo auction website at fwabphotoauction.org.

Volunteers We are so grateful for the tremendous support we receive from our volunteer community. Over 150 volunteers helped us with events, mailings, office duties, and outreach in 2013. Thank you to each and every one of our amazing helpers!

friends IN THE COMMUNITY

The Dam Climb Two friends, Carlos Agudelo and Annelise Tripp, braved 540 feet and 650 artificial holds to conquer the world’s largest artificial climbing wall, the Luzzone Dam in Ticino, Switzerland, in support of Angkor Hospital for Children. While on vacation in Cambodia, Carlos learned all about the work of AHC while donating blood to help children affected by dengue fever. Inspired to help, Carlos called his climbing buddy Annelise and they got to work. On August 18th, after 7 months of intense training, Carlos and Annelise scaled the wall hold by hold, step by step, in only 2 hours and 30 minutes! Their courageous efforts raised over $10,000 for children’s health care in Cambodia.

Beatrice & Richard’s Wedding After working in the advertising Industry for 12 years, Beatrice quit her job during the recession and embarked on a soul-searching adventure. It was in Cambodia when Bea had a sobering dose of reality. She was saddened by the impoverished condition the Cambodian people live in, and the lack of even the most basic healthcare. Upon a friend’s suggestion, she visited Angkor Hospital for Children and was deeply moved by the quality of care being given to the children. Beatrice and Richard decided rather than having a wedding registry, they would give back to others in need and asked friends and family to donate to AHC. Their touching gesture raised $6,000 for AHC.

LAO FRIENDS HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN A Snapshot of Health in Laos Kazumi Akao, our Nursing Education Director and Outreach Program Director for Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC), has seen firsthand the desperate situation children in Laos face during her visits to villages across the country. In one village, Kazumi met a boy who had never seen a medical professional, and whose toe was disintegrating because some bacteria had entered through a scratch. At several other villages, she met many mothers who were feeding their babies condensed milk as they could not afford formula. These mothers were not aware their babies weren’t receiving the proper nutrients their bodies need to survive which will eventually cause several health issues. These are not unique cases, and what is more disheartening is to know they are easily preventable with the right care. Although there typically are health facilities nearby these villages, parents hesitate to bring their children in for treatment because of the poorly trained medical staff and unsanitary conditions. These are the issues that will be addressed when LFHC opens its doors in 2015.

Ground Breaking Ceremony & Construction On November 26th, Friends joined together with leaders from the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as members of the local community to celebrate the ground breaking of LFHC. The festivities began with a Baci ceremony and monk blessing followed by traditional Laotian music and dancing. With a hard hat on and a shovel in hand, Kenro Izu led the charge as he scooped up the first bit of earth and officially broke ground on the hospital site. Slated to open in the spring of 2015, LFHC will include: 24 beds, Inpatient & Outpatient Departments, Emergency Room, Intensive Care Unit, Operation Theater, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Radiology, lecture rooms & library to teach pediatric medicine to the future leaders of the hospital, a kitchen & laundry for families visiting the hospital, and a vegetable garden to teach families how to prepare

nutritious meals. Replicating the successful model of Treatment + Education + Prevention achieved at AHC, Friends will also implement outreach programs to teach health promotion and disease prevention to the Lao community. Friends is proud to once again work with Friends Without A Border Japan on this project. Since 1996, Friends Japan has been working in close collaboration with Friends U.S. to bring highquality and compassionate care to the children of Southeast Asia. We are thrilled to have received such enthusiastic support for the new hospital. Many wonderful supporters have already pledged to adopt a room at LFHC. By adopting a room our supporters are providing the funds needed to build the room as well as outfit it with the necessary medical equipment. If you are interested in participating in the Adopt A Room program at LFHC, please get in touch with Jenni Cheers at jenni@fwab.org or 212.691.0909.

Baseline Medical Survey As construction progresses, Friends is currently conducting a baseline medical survey (BMS) in the Luang Prabang Province. A total of 4 teams, each with 5 team members – 1 supervisor, 2 interviewers and 2 biomarker data collectors – will be conducting the survey. In all, the teams will be visiting 90 randomly selected villages. The BMS will help us better understand the health needs of the children in the community, ensuring that the doctors and nurses of LFHC will be able to provide the best possible care. Over time, repeated assessments will enable LFHC to evaluate changes in the health status of children in Luang Prabang and measure LFHC’s impact. We are excited to be working with Dr. Jeffrey Measelle, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Oregon, who has been published extensively in the area of early childhood development. Dr. Measelle is donating his time and talents for this project.

Medical Education Classes Medical education classes are essential to long-term, high-quality consistency in care of the patients. Starting in June 2014, the medical personnel at LFHC will be taught international hospital procedures, English language skills, bedside manner, and state-of-the-art medical practices. The classes will be led by our Medical Education Director, Dr. Michael Maher, and our Nursing Education Director and Outreach Program Director, Kazumi Akao, with additional support from Nursing Clinical Educator, Yvonne Taylor.

AnGKor HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN In early 2013, Friends and AHC came together to celebrate a large milestone – the transition of hospital management from Friends to the Cambodian staff of AHC. One of Kenro’s goals was to create a world-class pediatric teaching hospital entirely staffed and managed by the Cambodians themselves. This transition was made possible by the hard work and demonstrated competence of the Cambodian staff in providing sophisticated medical care, financial and fundraising excellence, and managerial and visionary skills…all the while continuing to provide compassionate care, treating each child as if they were their own.

2013 Patients by Department Outpatient Department – 115,570 Inpatient Department – 3,622 Low Acuity Unit – 1,178 Emergency Room – 18,126 Intensive Care Unit – 729 Surgery Ward – 1,050 Surgery – 1,663 Satellite Clinic Outpatient – 18,455 Satellite Clinic Inpatient – 1,580 Dental – 31,440 Eye Clinic – 10,504 Homecare – 3,004

It’s no wonder that on January 20th, Kenro had a huge smile on his face as he handed the green, heart-shaped “key to the hospital” to the staff of AHC, entrusting the management and operations to a new local NGO called AHC International. Kenro says, “It’s like watching your child grow up and take their first steps in the world.” AHC took those first steps confidently, and throughout 2013 has continued to successfully deliver high-quality and compassionate care to the children of Cambodia. Among their major accomplishments in 2013 was adding a new Neonatal Unit. The new unit consists of two main areas: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for critical babies, and the Special Care Baby Unit. In the last 4 years over 1,000 neonates (babies under 28 days old) have been treated by AHC’s medical team and, until recently, just five beds were dedicated to care for AHC’s tiniest patients. With the opening of the new Neonatal Unit, AHC can care for up to 12 babies at any one time. For more information, visit angkorhospital.org.

Among their major accomplishments in 2013 was adding a new Neonatal Unit. A Strong Heart for Pov When Pov was two years old, his family noticed he was not developing like other children. His breathing was fast, and he was having difficulty keeping up with the other kids. In 2012, Pov was taken to a local government hospital after having a seizure, and was diagnosed with a serious congenital heart disease. Unfortunately, the hospital was unable to perform surgery, but his parents were told AHC may be able to help. After several tests at AHC, results showed Pov had Tetralogy of Fallot, a rare and complex heart defect that affects the normal flow of blood through the heart. Pov had been living with this condition for seven years before seeing the doctors at AHC. Pov was asked to take medication and come back for monthly check-ups until his condition improved enough for surgery. In May 2013, AHC’s cardiac team, in collaboration with Dr. Stefano Marianeschi and the AIB Foundation team from Italy, successfully operated on brave Pov, giving him the gift of a strong heart. Pov’s family says he is now much stronger, healthier and more active. He is always outside playing with his friends and has the biggest smile in the village!

Did you know that Friends also supports the efforts of The Lake Clinic (TLC)? Jon Morgan, who was the founding director of AHC, established TLC in 2007 to provide basic healthcare and health education to the isolated and underserved families living in floating villages on the Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia’s largest lake, and its tributaries. For those families, travel is possible only by boat, and healthcare can be more than 60 miles away. The average family income is roughly $2 (USD) per day, and the cost to bring an ill person to the nearest facility is beyond most families’ means.

TLC’s boat-based clinics represent the only sustained attempt at delivering care, treatment, and prevention to thousands of otherwise ignored families. What started as just an idea has now grown to five floating clinics (in five out of nine villages) and a small “fleet” of boats providing transport and support for two clinical teams. In 2013, TLC’s medical teams saw a total of 20,033 patients, of which 7,698 were children. One of TLC’s biggest accomplishments in 2013 included launching The Taxi, a brand new highspeed boat designed to get medical care to the families much quicker.
