Summer is Here!

by Dr. Ralph Carter | Pastor

Evidence that summer is here aboundS! Temperatures are unseasonably high (I am writing this on June 9). All the children are out of school. And most importantly, if you are a pastor, attendance at church has hit the summer slump. People have begun taking vacations and started heading to the area lakes to get cool. I hope your summer is filled with fun family outings and that you get to take a memorable vacation, if possible. I also hope you will be faithful in your commitment to the Lord. Can I tell you several things you can do to help us further our work, even while more people than normal are away? 1. When you are in town, don’t miss Sunday School and worship. There is plenty of time to get to the lake or mountains after morning worship. I promise you that taking the time to worship the Lord and to support the work and ministry of our church will only allow you to enjoy the day all the more. 2. When you must be away, don’t wait until the last minute to find a replacement. Every job is important and you will be missed. Find a replacement, whether you are a teacher, usher, or greeter. Take your commitments seriously.

3. While you are away, the expenses of the church continue as usual. Be sure to be as faithful in tithing in the summer as you are all the other seasons of the year. 4. Finally, when guests visit you this summer, bring them with you to church. We would love to meet them and the Lord might use this opportunity to speak to their hearts about spiritual matters. Wouldn’t it be great if your grandchildren, children or parents found the Lord while worshiping with you?

Let’s make this a summer to remember, recreationally and spiritually.

Muchas Gracias

by Jim Russell | Rescue Minister

On May 7, we held our second Hispanic Family Festival here on our campus. Pastor Carlos Ruiz and our Hispanic Ministry members, along with a number of other Brushy Creekers, worked very hard to make it all happen. The Mexican Consulate also set up to serve the community at Brushy Creek that day. When all was said and done, well over 1000 people from the Hispanic Community came to Brushy Creek! In addition to the work of the consulate, we had a medical care center, offering blood tests and blood sugar checks, eye exams, and dental checks. In addition, several of our doctors gave talks on heath. We even gave out free vitamins. There were also inflatables, free food, and a special speaker who shared the Gospel in Spanish, right out on our front yard.

I just want to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their help to make the festival a reality. Marshall Croy and David Nabors, and their crew, spent many hours, before, during, and after the festival, to make it happen. Doctors Francis Nuthalapaty, John Eberly, Lyn Hammond, and Tom Tucker all gave of their time and expertise. And many more Brushy Creekers helped out in a myriad of ways. So to everyone, let me just offer a sincere muchas gracias/ thank you! We already know of at least two men who have prayed to receive Christ and are now active in the Brushy Creek Hispanic Ministry, as a result of the Hispanic Family Festival. We expect to see more fruit born in the future. One thing we do know for sure, many of the Hispanic Community now view our church as a congregation that cares about them. Thank the Lord for that privilege.

The Prodigal God

| JULY 2011

by David Kay | Associate Pastor

Just wanted to let you know about a class I’m facilitating next year during Greenhouse. The class is called “The Prodigal God” by Tim Keller. The class format is as follows: We come together and watch about 15 minutes of DVD and then spend the rest of the time discussing what we see. This is a great class for people new to the faith or for those who have been serving God for years. This class will certainly make you conclude as did the apostle Paul: “And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is” (Ephesians 3:18). Be looking for more details as we approach the Greenhouse schedule for 2011-2012.

Success! by Robbie Sox | Minister of Music We had a wonderful Creative Arts Camp last month. Our children developed their hidden talents in art, drama, dance, guitar and percussion. I hope that next year will be even better. Thanks for enrolling your child for this wonderful experience!

Think of Others by Angela Carter | Minister of College and Missions I have been training to run in a 5K later this month (June). Don’t ask me about my time, because it will just embarrass the both of us. But, I have been training, trying to shave 4 minutes off of my Swamp Rabbit 5K time. I have a friend who is a runner. We have done a couple of 5Ks together and he always finishes light years ahead of me. He has run a marathon and while he isn’t currently at the top of his game, a 12-minute mile feels like a walk in the park to him. About a month ago, I asked him if he would help me improve. He quickly agreed. We have been jogging about four nights a week since then…at my pace. Over the last few weeks, I have watched him run backwards to be able to look at me and encourage me, finish a practice 5K without any labored breathing, and put in late hours to put together the perfect music mix to motivate me. This week I have been trying to figure out what in the world he is getting out of this. I keep thinking that he must be bored to death and so ready for this to be over. And then yesterday he said, “when this 5K is over, I think we should start with a new goal. Let’s not lose this momentum.” REALLY??? Why in the world would he want to keep helping me? And then I thought about one of my favorite passages in scripture, Philippians 2:1-11. If we really want to live like Christ, it has to permeate every area of our lives. Verses 3-4 say, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Do you practice this command? Is there anything that you do, not because it is good for you, but because it is good for someone else? I have been encouraged in tremendous ways through the actions of my “Coach”! Let’s check our motivations and make sure that what we say we believe, is evidenced in how we live!

Foundation

by Jeremiah Oliver | Middle School Pastor

what: pastorS’ camp // when: august 5-7 // Where: camp awanita - Marietta, SC // Cost: $100 // Registration: 7/11 - 7/25 This year’s theme for Pastors’ camp is “Foundation”. Our goal through this camp is to build a strong foundation of family, friendship, and fellowship within our middle school ministry. Jesus Christ is our sure foundation and we know that apart from Him we cannot do anything! (John 15:5) I am praying that this year’s Pastors’ camp is going to be the best one ever! The purpose of this camp is for our students to get to know their pastors at Brushy Creek and to build a stronger relationship with Jesus. The incredible part of this is that they have the opportunity to get to know their Sunday school teachers and also build relationships with other kids in the youth group! This has continued to be the favorite camp of the summer and this year will be no exception!

Brazil Bound

I am excited to say that we are going to Camp Awanita this year! (Awanita.org) Hummer rides, horseback riding, low ropes challenge course, zip line, waterslide, mud pit, and Frisbee golf are a few of the exciting things this camp offers! Not to mention the mountain setting is beautiful and the overall experience is going to be life-changing! No rising 6th grader through rising 9th grader will want to miss this camp! It is going to be the best Pastors’ Camp ever. Don’t delay! Registration begins July 11 at BrushyCreek.org. Join your pastors and Sunday school teachers to build and strengthen your spiritual foundation for the 2011-2012 school year! God bless and thanks for the privilege of ministering at Brushy Creek!

by Benji Ladd | High School Pastor

This month, roughly 20 high school seniors and 10 adults will spend 10 days in Fortaleza, Brazil. We will be ministering to orphans at Davis Lar Orphanage. I ask that you would partner with us in prayer so that God would be glorified in every aspect of this trip.

Awana by Tammy Roach | Director of Awana

I remember as a child what an impact my youth pastor had on my life. He encouraged me to live my life for the Lord. Just last week, I heard him preach a sermon and it brought back so many wonderful memories. Wow, isn’t that amazing? I haven’t seen him in years but he still touched me. Have you touched someone’s life lately? By serving in AWANA, you can! We have many spots to fill before August. Please prayerfully consider serving in AWANA. No preparation is necessary...just a willing heart to serve. We need leaders for K-3, K-4, K-5 Girls, K-5 Boys, 1st Grade Girls, 2nd Grade Girls, 2nd Grade Boys, 3rd Grade Girls, 5th Grade Girls, 5th Grade Boys, Cubbies, Sparks and T & T Directors, and an Awana Store Manager. If you are interested, please contact Tammy Roach at dtroach@charter.net, Amy Childers at amy@childersmail.com, or Eleanor Bishop at eleanor0930@yahoo.com.

Women of Brushy Creek The 2nd Annual Single Moms Event was held on Friday, May 6. We had nearly 90 single moms attend. A wonderful dinner was served by Winston Florence and Culinary Catering. Our guest speaker was Elsa Kok Colopy. We had one salvation, one recommitment to Christ, and four moms committed to reading their Bibles every day! The event was a wonderful night to honor these moms who rarely get a pat on the back. Over 20 companies donated items to be used as door prizes. Since the Single Moms Ministry has started just over a year ago, we have had

two salvations and seven single moms become members of Brushy Creek. Not bad for what started as a Bible study with only nine moms and now has over 50 moms in the Single Moms Ministry. The Single Moms Ministry is currently collecting pillow cases to help with the “Dress A Girl Around the World” Project. The Single Moms help out each month with the “Angel Food Ministry” and have recently just started their own help program called “Help A Mama” where they help other single moms with house projects. We hope to use this as an outreach very soon.

For more information regarding the Single Moms Ministry please contact Sarah Uber at 864-283-6754 or 772-285-4040 or wesleysarahandautumn@juno.com or Christine Pressley at 864-704-3418 or eliz.pres@yahoo.com
