From the Desk of Editor-in-Chief Arun K. Bansal

Our Goal - Regeneration of Astrology The history of astrology dates back to the Vedic times. It was a much more developed science at that time and had a high level of credibility. Over the ages, it lost credentials slowly and slowly. The mantras we recite, the Goal we worship are all done because ancestors have been doing without having a firm belief about the results like that of a medicine. In the modern era computers & modern astronomy have come to its rescue. Now we know a lot about the cosmos around is & we can compute the planetary positions with the help of computers almost instantaneously. The only task left is to test the information available to us in piece meals and bind them together to give rules appropriate to modern life. This will rebuild the confidence in Astrology and remedies adopted for various planets. At AIFAS our main goal is nothing but Regeneration of Astrology To achieve this goal our first aim is to teach the available information astrology and then to carry research on it and test each & every rule in Astrology to understand the behaving of planets on human life. The researches when compiled together will definitely lead to new level of confidence in this science. To give the work done by such researches a value addition, we are now affiliated to Mewar University of Chattisgarh. Due to this affiliation the student will be able to get Graduation & Post Graducation degrees and researches will be able to get M.Phil & Ph.D. degrees. We are also proposing for B. Tech & M. Tech in Astrology to make it technical subject use astrology as a tool to detect nature’s unforeseen in advance for the benefit of mankind. We should not underestimate application of astrology became it is only this subject which can help us know the events much in advance, like heart attack, cancer or other health hazards in a human life and earthquakes famines, droughts in nature. With the umbrella of our Patrons Pt. Shukdev Chaturvediji, Pt. Jai Prakash Sharma Ji, Dr. S.D. Sharma & Sh. Rajiv Shulka of our Chief General Secretary Pt. S. R. Swamy and help of our all the office bearers, Chapter chairman faculty members and hard work of all the students, I hope your Federation will be able to lead this Vedic Science to a new dimension.

From the Desk of Managing Editor Pt. S. R. Swamy

AIFAS - A New Era in Astrology It is indeed a very joyful event that All India federation of Astrologers Societies is bringing its long awaited Research Journal. It gives me a great pleasure to write the History of AIFAS from its humble start on 9th May 2001 to this date. All India federation of Astrologers societies started during 2001 where more than 12 Astrologers Societies belonging to different states joined together and formed this All India federation, mainly with the intention to promote this divine science of Astrology in the entire world and to encourage the Astrologers of our Country by rendering necessary assistance needed by them in all respects. The federation has undertaken a herculean task to build a large and unique force of Astrologers throughout the world by opening different chapters not only in our country but also in other countries to teach astrology scientifically. Our efforts attracted the public in a big way and thousands of students qualified in last two and a half years. We are proud to announce that AIFAS has registered 101 chapters as on 31st December 2003, merely two and a half years of its incorporation and has over 5000 students enrolled to study astrology, vastu, palmistry and numerology. The federation also encouraged many deserving astrologers to write required text books in easy languages and published many such books for the benefit of students. Under the promotional activities of Astrology, Federation has conducted numerous conferences through out the country and created public awareness. AIFAS also enjoyed the proud privilege by organizing two successful conferences out side our country i.e. one at MAURITIUS and the other at NETHERLANDS. Today we are proud to announce that ours is the only Astrological institute affiliated to a full fledged University thereby we can offer University level regular and full time courses as per the norms of the University in the near future. We are solely committed to promote this divine science of Astrology and other similar occult sciences through out the world and create a common platform for the entire community of Astrologers.

What is Correct?

Nirayan, or Sayan? Indian, or Western? Arun K. Bansal

There has been a lot of confusion to the fact whether Sayan system is right or Nirayan. Though being a major difference, yet it has not been well understood. Here, in this article, we try to clarify that the planets in the sky are moving according to Nirayan system, and hence only the nirayan system should be followed in astrology. Sayan system is merely meant for knowing the earth's position with respect to Sun and thus determining the seasons but it is not meant for knowing which planet is passing through which sign.

A

s per the western system sun enters into Aries on 22nd March every year whereas in Indian system Sun goes to Aries on 13/14th of April every year. What is correct? Both can not be correct at one time & definitely this means a lot in astrology. A difference of 23-24 days can not be ignored when we are talking of few minutes or seconds accuracy in giving predictions. The followers of Sayan system strongly recommend the usage of 22nd March as entry of Sun into Aries. We at “Future Point have tried to go into the root of this problem by looking at the stars physically in the sky and arrived at a conclusion that in the sky, all planets move according to the nirayan system only. To understand it fully let us divide the study into two parts. 1. What is the situation of various planets as computed presently versus the stars. 2. What was the situation 2000 years ago & what will be the situation after 2000 years. Second condition amplifies the difference of Ayanamsa to give a more clear view about the Sayan & Nirayan systems. Now we will discuss both the points in detail. January-March 2004

1. Present Star Position It is difficult to watch the stars while Sun is in the sky. During month of May no planet shall be visible in the sky at night. So we are giving the position of Moon every day when it is visible at night during the month of May 98. As per Sayan & Nirayan system the longitudes of Moon during first half of May '98 given in table I. Moon's transit into different signs from May 1-15th 1998 are given in table-II. If we look into the figures of table I, we find that Moon attains, after 2 days appox. the same degree in Nirayan system as in Sayan system e.g. It is at Leo 160 on 3rd May as per Sayan system and on 5th May as per nirayan system. The fig. A show the position of Moon during the first half of May 98, at 10 pm. in Delhi. If we look into the position of Moon & compare with its degrees as per Sayan and Nirayan system, it is very obvious that Moon’s actual movement is very close to the Nirayan system & it does not tally with Sayan system at all. For example on 5th May 98 it is at Leo-160 as per nirayan system. In the sky also, (fig A) moon is in mid of Leo sign, whereas Sayan system gives a value of Virgo-100. The moon is visible in Virgo not before 7th May 98. This situation can be studied daily between 1-15 May as per table I and sky map A to find the actual movement of moon in the sky. Hence we can say that we should follow only the Nirayan system for all astrological computations. 2. Past & Future Star Positions To look into the past & future, we shall take 10

help of sky maps as computed by scientific programmes which are known to be accurate by todays scientists of the world. Let us look at the position of Sun as per Sayan & Nirayan system at a gap of 1000 years from 15 May 0001 to 15th May 5001 at 12 Noon at Delhi. The position of Sun are given in table III. Fig. B shows clearly that Sun is in Pisces on 15th May in year 5001 whereas as per the Sayan system it should be in Taurus. This is far away from the truth. Secondly we can clearly see the movement of Sun with respect to stars. It is moving behind by appox. 140 every 1000 years. This is exactly what the ayanamsa is. Fig B shows clearly that Sun enters into Taurus on 15 May 1998. It is not towards end of Taurus as suggested by Sayan system. The above explanation clearly & undoubtedly prove that Nirayan system as followed in vedic astrology is correct and is in accordance to the star position in the sky. Does it mean that western system which is quite accurate as per the modern science is wrong ? The answer is No. Table-III Position of Sun on 15th May at 12 hrs. at Delhi during year 1-5001 Year 1 1001 2001 3001 4001 5001

Fig. D. Position of the Sun in the Milky Way Galaxy è

Then how both the systems can be correct at the same time & still be different? We know that western system is basically a solar system & not based on stars. Here zero degree refers to a position with respect to the Sun coordinates or the Vernal equinoctial point i.e. the ascending node of the ecliptic on the equator. It does not have to do any thing with the Aries star whereas in the Nirayan system, 0 degree means a position in the direction of Aries star. Actually zero degree of sayan system which never refers to Aries star has mistakenly been taken as zero degree of Aries. This small anomaly has led to the confusion between the Sayan & the Nirayan system. We should not confuse overselves & say that Sun enters into Aries on 22nd March every year. We should rather say that Sun attains a longitude of zero degree on 22nd March as per Sayan system or the Solar coordinate system. With this clarification let us also clarify that astrological predictions given as per the sayan system does not have sound astrological basis. We can not & should not take the properties of various signs same for Sayan and Nirayan systems. 12

Let us understand what is ayanamsa which makes all this difference in the two systems. Ayanamsa is basically precession of the equinoxes. It can be understood better when we look at our galaxy. We know that our solar system is a part of galaxy called "Milky Way" which looks like fig. C & our solar system is moving around the centre of the milky way as shown in fig. D. Sun takes roughly 26,000 years appox. to complete one circle around the galaxy. The stars remain fixed and do not move around. Because of the motion of the sun, the position of stars changes by 50.3 arc seconds every year and it takes roughly 20 minutes 24 seconds more time for earth to complete the circle around Sun with respect to these stars. That is why the sidereal year is 365.256363 days compared to solar year of 365.2422 days only. To sum up we Know that Indian astrology is based on stars and any planet passing through the particular star gives the results of that star or changes its behaviour acco-rding to the stars it passes through. Only Nirayan system gives us computations of planets with respect to stars; Sayan system refers to planet positions in solar coordinate system. Hence only Nirayan system should be r followed for predictions in astrology.

Guideline for Prediction Pt. S. R. Swamy (Ahmedabad)

T

he principles enumerated below are collected from variety of rare classicals, in Sanskrit, Hindi, English, Telugu and Kannada and my practical application in my career in Astrology for the last thirty years, or even more. Initially I am starting with different Yogas to be observed carefully at the time of birth of a child. Yogas enumerated below are some of the few which are generally and frequently found in various horoscopes of new born. •

If the birth takes place is Mesha Lagna and Navamsha Lagna being Mithuna and Mars being occupied in Navamsha Lagna, then the child will have it’s ambilical chord around its neck at the time of birth.

If Moon occupy the Lagna and strong malefics occupy 2nd, 12th, 7th and 8th houses, then child may not survive immediately after birth.

Moon under the aspect of a strong malefic and Mars occupying 7th or 11th house, in conjunction with Saturn, will result in abandoning the child by mother and the child will die.

In the natal chart if the moon having the aspect of strong & benefic Jupiter the child will have long life. A Child born in Simha Lagna and conjunction of Sun and Moon in Lagna under the aspect of Mars and Saturn, will cause loss of eyesight right from the time of birth. Combust or retrogated, Sun, Moon or Venus in 2nd, or 12 th house, sandwiched in

between strong malifics, will give blindness right from birth. •

Conjunction of Lords of Lagna & 12th house with sun or venus in 6th, 8th or 12th house will give blindness right from birth.

If a lady conceives during the transit of Sun on natal Ketu, she will give birth to a mentally retarded child.

If a lady conceives during the transit of Ketu on natal Sun, occupying 5th house in his own Rasi, she will give birth to a mentally retarded child.

In a female horoscope, Ketu having relation either with 5th house, or with the lord of 5th house and 7th house, is badly afflicted by malefics. She will give birth to a defective (limbs) child.

If a child is born in Makara Lagna between 270 to 300 and Lagna is under the aspect of Sun, Moon and Saturn, the child will become a dwarf.

A child born in Meena Lagna and the Lagna is under the aspect of Moon, Mars and Saturn, the child will have defective limbs (legs) at the time of birth.

Lagna &7th house occupied by strong malefics & Moon is also badly afflicted by malefics, will cause immediate death of the child.

A child born 48 minutes before sunrise, or 48 minutes after sunset and Chandra Hora being raising at the time of birth and the most powerful malefic planet of the chart

will avert the evil Yogas at the time of birth.

occupying its last Navamsa will result in death of the child immediately after birth.

If weak Moon occupying 12 house with evil planets occupying Lagna and 8th house and Kendra Sthana’s are without any benefic, will result in death of the child immediately after birth.

Full moon in a Kendra, or Trikona, placed in between two powerful benefics and without any malefic influence will give long life to the newborn.

If retro gate Satrun occupying the signs of Mars and Mars occupying 6th or 8th houses, without any benefic aspect, then the child may not live for more than 2 years.

If any of the PanchMaha Purasha Yoga (proper in all respects) is seen in the birth chart, then the child is free from all evils and enjoy long life.

If Sun, weak Moon and Mars in conjunction occupy 5th house, without the relation of any benefic planet, the child may not live beyond 9 years.

Full Moon in conjunction with a powerful Guru without any malefic influence and occupying a Kendra and aspecting the Janma Rasi or it's Lord will save the child from all the evils.

Conjunction of Sun, Moon and Saturn in 8th house without any benefic aspect, the child may not live beyond 9 years.

th

Antidotes for the Above Evil Yogas •

Astrology : A Science, or Myth Dr. Amar Aggarwal, Chandigarh Chapter

T

he oldest scriptures of the world are the Vedas and Vedas are supreme knowledge. In beginning Vedas were undivided and were known as 'SRUTI'. But as time advanced, these were divided into four parts viz. Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda. Historical facts hold that Rigveda is the first written document of the world. Vedanga, such as Vyakaran, Nirukta, Siksha, Kalpa, Chhanda and Jyotisha developed likewise. Thus Jyotisha is Vedanga i.e. a limb of Vedas. In fact, Jyotisha Shastra, or Astro Science has been accepted as the eye of Vedas. Thus it is very clear that before learning Vedas one must learn Jyotishaa or Astro-Science. This Jyotisha Shastra or Astro-Science is further divided into three sections. The first one is Sidhanta Sakanda, or Astronomy, the second one is Hora Skanda, which deals with the study of the impact of heavenly bodies on Jataka, or human and the third one is Sakha Skanda, which tells about the study of rising, setting, retrogression and various other aspects of planets. The very name Astrology is derived from the words 'Astro' meaning star and 'Logos' meaning reason. Thus the word Astrology means the reason , or logic of stars. In vedas it is called 'Jyotisham' which means the science of the bright heavenly bodies. In

18

Sanskrit it is known as 'Hora-Shastra', the science of time. Thus in few words it can be said that Astrology is the science which corelates the stars, time, reason and the earth. That is the reason Astrology covers the influence of stars and planets on human beings, animal kingdom, future of the country, various diseases, floods, earthquakes, weather and market etc. affecting both the animates and the inanimates. Thus our sages by their powerful intuition and foresight could discover that though the man is mortal, but his soul is immortal. The results of our deeds good or bad, remain stored in an unknown form to affect us at its own time reason Vedic knowledge holds that as the reason for our being subjected to re-birth time and again, to settle our score with destiny, born out of our past deeds. Now we come to the scientific reasons to prove that Astrology is a science. • On a full moon doctors generally avoid surgery without citing any reason, since they do not have one but astrology tells that on a full moon if a person is operated, it can be harmful due to excessive bleeding. • In many places people do not cut bamboos on a full moon, as to prevent it from worm infestation, be cause if a bamboo tree is cut on a full moon, it looses much of it's fluid. • On a eclipse scientists have only one theory

that it happens because the light omitted by Sun is blocked either by moon or by earth. But can they tell the reason that whenever there is an eclipse, either sages, with their sheer intelligence, have given the reasons for this phenomenon.

deals with horoscopes of individuals made at the time of their birth and studies are conducted related to one's general as well as specific problems, with permutations and combinations of planets, their placement in various houses and relevant Dasa.

• Regarding this one can find it's mention in the oldest scripture Rig-Veda, vide Mandala 5, Sukta 40 and Mantra 5.9; that is when Rahu (Swarbhanu) covered the Sun with darkness (Tamasa) the individuals having no knowledge of astronomy (Kshetra Vidya) were surprised. It was only sage Atri, who was an authority on astronomy, knew the reason and timing of eclipse in details, as he described the commencement of the event (eclipse) and its ending time perfectly, while one else was able to find any reason for an eclipse.

2. Horary : This is an important branch of astrology, which many a time scores over the natal horoscopy. An instant query can be answered in a perfect and authentic manner.

• Similar description stands mentioned in the name of sage Atri in Tandya Brahmana, vide Manadla 6, Sukta 6 and Mantra 8. Again in Mandala 14, Sukta 11, and Mantra 15 the description of the occurrence of an eclipse and its timing, ie. the beginning, the middle and the end of eclipse. The role of Sun, Rahu and the umbra/penumbra has been clearly hinted at. • Again Rigveda in Mandala 10, Sukta 4 and Mantra 55 has a word "Panchdevan Ritusheh", which means five planets from Mars to Saturn represent five elements i.e. fire, earth, ether, water and air, which form the basis of all creations. They also represent the five seasons. Thus these quotes from the Vedas confirm that astrology is a complete science. It has been further divided into so many branches as under : 1. Natal Horoscopy : This branch of astrology January-March 2004

3. Mundane Astrology : This branch of astrology deals with the National and International forecasting. Great Varahamihira, an ancient astrologer, has made comprehensive mention of this subject in his classic Brihat Samhita. This branch also deals in forecasting of market trends, rains, earthquakes etc. These are the few examples out of thousands and if applied in a proper way with sincere efforts, this science scores over the other sciences. Hence astrology is a complete r science and not a myth, or hoax.
