Attendees Welcome the Return of the CEDIA Expo Exhibit Hall

With the education tracks firmly underway, the CEDIA Expo exhibit floor opened yesterday morning to give industry pros the opportunity to engage in fact-to-face interaction with their peers, something they’ve not been able to do in a long time.

“It’s been two years since CEDIA Expo 2019 and clearly there is a pent-up demand to get back to events,” said Jason McGraw, group vice president, CEDIA Expo and KBIS, Emerald. “We have some very enthusiastic exhibitors and attendees—there’s a great education program put on by CEDIA, lots of show floor sessions, and dozens of new-to-market companies or first-time exhibitors here, which is great.”

Though not nearly as big as past events, this year’s CEDIA Expo still offers ample opportunity to meet and connect. “I have attended CEDIA Expo as an integrator looking to improve my business, and I’ve also attended working the booth for manufacturers,” said attendee Morgan Harman. “I am returning now as an independent consultant with the intention

of reconnecting with associates in the industry, as well as to try and be more involved with CEDIA as an association.

“Of course, in the last two weeks I watched as the opportunity to connect with colleagues evaporated because many of them have chosen to not come [to Indianapolis], or their companies have chosen to not be here, but for me personally, it was still important to attend. In fact, I’ve already bumped into a few people this morning and the show floor is not even open yet, so it’s looking promising.”

James Chavers is a consultant for end users, and he is on the lookout for next big thing. “I’ve come to see some of the latest tech in home integration,” he said. “Clients are looking to upgrade and see what kinds of products are out there. I am here to find innovative technology that they might be interested in. Plus, it’s nice to get out of the house.”

Integrators Ric Warner and Jordan Smith from Warner Audio & Video are also on the hunt for the latest technology. “You always come to see the new

products,” said Warner. “You always find something, and the new companies are interesting.”

For Smith, this is his first time at a CEDIA Expo.

“I’m really excited to see everything,” he said. “I just started getting into the industry, and there’s a whole lot of new stuff that I’m still clueless on, but I’m excited to learn. And this is one of the best chances to do that, even with a small crowd.”

McGraw sums it up well, saying, “I’m looking forward to a great few days, and I hope this will propel us on to more success in the channel throughout the rest of this year and into next year. Of course, we’ll look forward to reconvening a full-size show next year in Dallas.”

The Common Thread Is Matter

By Cindy Davis The Tuesday CEDIA Expo panel “Platform Playground: Shaping the Future of the Smart Home & Where Protocols Face Opportunities and Challenges” brought together six people representing seemingly competitive protocols and alliances to discuss the idea of creating a universal standard for interoperability among all smart home devices and ecosystems, the big kahuna for the Internet of Things (IoT) in the home.

The panelists were Michelle Mindala-Freeman, head of marketing for the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), Kevin Kraus, director of technology and integration support at Yale Residential, Mitch Klein, executive director of the Z-Wave Alliance, Mariusz Malkowski, director of customer success and integration at Building 36 Technologies, Kevin Po, senior product manager at Google, and John Osborne, president of LEEDARSON NA, past chairman of the Connectivity Standards Alliance, and vice chairman of the Z-Wave Alliance. AVNation founder Tim Albright moderated.

The smart home industry representatives on this panel weren’t espousing a particular product or solution but discussing the context of a universal standard for interoperability—in this case, Matter.

As stated on the Matter website, “This industry–unifying standard is a promise of reliable, secure connectivity—a seal of approval that devices will work seamlessly together, today and tomorrow. This collaborative breakthrough is built on proven technologies and guided by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (formerly Zigbee Alliance), whose members come together from across industries to transform the future of connectivity.”

Matter is supported by more organizations than those represented on the panel. “We have over 200

companies participating in the standard specification development and in the development of the SDK. We will also have interoperability among those devices and with most of the major ecosystem providers globally,” said Mindala-Freeman. “We have HomeKit onboard, as well as Amazon, Google and Samsung SmartThings. When we talk about implementing Matter, we’re really talking about devices being able to communicate with ecosystems, irrespective of the underlying brands.”

Addressing the custom installers in the room who install control systems from any number of manufacturers, Z-Wave Alliance’s Mitch Klein characterized the market today as being made up of a number of “walled garden systems that right now are requiring you to buy the products that they specify.” He said, “Each time you want to add as a device, if it’s not already in that database, you then have to build an API that can create and build a new interface, or you can pay a third party to make those interfaces for you.”

Positing a future with a universal standard, he continued, “Imagine what happens when you don’t have to do that anymore? You can now be more focused on your customer than on what you can do with the products that you have.”

By Cindy Davis CEDIA Expo’s Launchpad is a pavilion on the show floor where the newest residential technology brands share their innovations. Located there are brands that have been in business for fewer than three years or have never exhibited at CEDIA Expo, as well as CEDIA Propel brands.

This year’s Launchpad brands include: Allterco Robotics, AutoSlide, Blonder Tongue Labs, Dejero, GDC Technology (USA), guardDog Solutions, HideA-Trim, Juke Audio, KEW Labs and Orro.

JUKE AUDIO Having launched its first product in November 2019, and after winning a CE Pro 2020 Best Product Award in the multiroom audio category, Brad and Colton Forth, the father and son team (respectively) of Los Angeles-based Juke Audio decided it was time to exhibit at CEDIA.

Colton Forth (left) and Brad Forth of Juke Audio “It is a very innovative solution for multiroom audio,” said Brad Forth, co-founder of Juke Audio, of the Juke product. “One Juke device powers all of the speakers throughout a home or property, and then everything is done wirelessly from smartphones and tablets.”

Juke has already been installed in more than 1,500 homes. “The company has four dozen dealers and is looking to sign up more at CEDIA.” said Juke Audio’s president, Colton Forth.

Two Juke multiroom audio systems are available: the Juke-6 (12 channels) and the Juke-8 (16 channels). “If it’s a larger home, then you can have a multitude of these devices on the same network. They discover each other, no setup is required, and then you can make a 24-zone system, a 32-zone system,” Brad Forth added.

KEW LABS Kew Labs has invented a device that delivers invisible wireless phone charging to every environment.

(except a metal one) up to 1 inch thick. Simply place a phone on the icon that has been applied to the surface and charging begins.

“Basically, wireless Paul Brown, Kew Labs charging ends up everywhere and charging your phone doesn’t become an inconvenience,” said Paul Brown, vice president of sales and marketing at Kew Labs. “With our technology, you can daisy chain two of them together,” he added. “One has the power adapter, and then a connector connects both.”

GUARDDOG SOLUTIONS With more than 20,000 cybersecurity solutions on the market, how does a company like guardDog Solutions stand a chance at a niche smart home industry show like CEDIA? guardDog’s business development advisor, Glenn Merlin Johnson, said it’s simple. “Our CEO, Peter Bookman, created this plug-and-play device that’s very simple to deploy. You don’t have to be an IT specialist, you can deploy it in five minutes, and it protects the entire network for your homeowner or your office.” The device installed in the home is aptly called Fido and is ready for deployment today.

Johnson explained that Bookman has been working on the technology for the past 25 years, and five years ago created the AI for the product and connectivity of guardDog. With everyone being sent home to work 18 months ago at the start of the pandemic, protecting the home network from intruders has become a particularly important and underserved category. “We call this ‘protecting the edge territory,’” Johnson said. “The edge territory is everything outside of the enterprise network.”

Where other alarm companies protect the contents of and the people inside the home, guardDog sits at the cyber door. “We are like a cyber alarm company making sure that nobody can get in to take personal property and identities.” Johnson said.

Johnson added that they are currently working on the details of a dealer program with a recurring revenue stream.

AUTOSLIDE Autoslide’s vice president, Joseph Castonguay, is proud to announce that in December 2020, the company became a CEDIA member and part of the Propel program. Autoslide designs and manufactures automatic sliding door and window systems for residential and light commercial applications.

onto existing doors,” Castonguay said. “You can add our product onto a manually-open door or window and automate them.”

Currently, the biggest application for Autoslide is in increasing accessibility for users such as the elderly, “who have limited mobility, have to struggle to open doors, especially in places like Florida, where they have heavy-impact doors for hurricanes,” Castonguay said. “Instead of having to strain to open the door, they can just push a button, use a motion sensor, or use a phone to open those doors.”

The second biggest application for Autoslide is in the pet market. “We have a built-in pet mode, so you can convert your patio doors into automatic pet doors,” CasJoseph Castonguay, Autoslide tonguay said.
