The best of 2016
Here at FM Towers, we’re lucky enough to have a steady stream of exciting new instruments, effects and studio gear landing on our test bench all year round. Despite this, we still spend months looking forward to the creation of our annual Gear Of The Year issue. There’s something extra exciting about being able to round up all of our favourite pieces of production gear, connect it all up and then take a step back to reconsider it all. Towards the end of each year, we do exactly that – re-examine all the hardware and software that’s impressed us over the previous 12 months, re-visiting our reviews of each and considering how each piece has held up since then. The contents of this issue are the results of that process. From page 25 onwards, you’ll find our selections of 2016’s best synths, drum machines, controllers, software and more. In each case, we’ve collated shortlists and highlighted winners, handing out a few special awards along the way. Whether things have impressed us through sound, workflow, value or innovation, you can be sure that everything is worthy of a place in your studio. We hope you enjoy reading the issue as much as we have making it!

Modal unveil £79 synth kit Modal Electronics have produced some powerful and expensive synths, but their latest project is a small and affordable one… Or should we say your project, because the CRAFTsynth is something that you need to build yourself. This is a monophonic eight-knob instrument that we’re told can be put together without the need to solder in less than ten minutes. There are two oscillators per voice, though the unison/spread mode enables you to split each oscillator into four separate detunable sub oscillators, effectively giving you eight (got that?). There’s also an LFO with six destinations, a resonant low-pass filter and delay and distortion effects. The instrument can be played from a five-note touch panel, though the CRAFTsynth can also send and receive MIDI over USB. There’s a CRAFTapp in the offing, too, which will enable you to change the state of the filter and get “in-depth” with your synthesis. The CRAFTsynth can be powered by USB or batteries and sports headphone and line outputs. It’s available exclusively from Gear4music and can be ordered now for £79 with delivery expected to be 14th December.
