hat fun to be asked to ‘guest edit’ this issue! Humans have always wanted to honour the landscape and be as near to it as possible. There’s a primal need to get close to the land. Photographers, painters and poets just cannot seem to let it go: it’s as if they’ve got to bring their emotional experience of the land to life. There’s a burning compulsion to say: “I find this experience wonderful, and I need to evoke it”. The camera is a conduit to all those things. Choosing 25 landscape locations was a challenge, so I thought of places where I feel I’ve come away a better human being, enriched by having been blessed by the experience of that part of the world. The process of discovery is so illuminating and uplifting, and I’m so grateful to have experienced such amazing beauty. I hope you enjoy my selection...

Our cover photographer CHARLIE WAITE tells the story of how he captured this month’s cover image: “Someone only has to mention the region of Provence, and your mind immediately summons up images of vast swathes of lavender. If you are fortunate enough to come across a farmer who likes to

go Technicolor, there is a fair chance of finding a field of lavender adjacent to a field of what I call the ‘comic crop’ sunflowers. “If lavender is your bag, timing is everything in Provence. It can be hot in this marvellous region, but there will always be some fine stone barns in which to

find some shade, or the legendary Senanque Abbey for a pause. “Near the Camargue, made so famous with rampaging horses, there are gentle stretches of reed flanked canals that may have some appeal, and there is always more lavender.”

Val d’Orcia Dawn, Tuscany, Italy PHIL MALPAS “The image was taken during our 2016 tour to Tuscany (led by Clive Minnitt and me). The Val d’Orcia in springtime is truly a special location. If conditions are right, there is often low-lying mist as the sun rises over nearby Pienza. On this day, conditions were perfect: ever since, everyone who was on the tour with us has referred to 25 May 2016 as ‘That dawn’! ” Kit Nikon D800 with Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 lens at 200mm Exposure 1/250 sec at f/11

It’s why l keep returning Andalucia to lead this wonderful tour: it’s where my photographic journey began.” Kit Fujifilm XT-1 with XF50-140mm lens Exposure 1/50 sec at f/11

Midas Touch, Bruges, Belgium valda bailey “This was taken during an Impressions of Bruges workshop, co-led with Doug Chinnery. The Christmas markets had just opened up. I have a long-standing obsession with stained glass, so I tried incorporating elements of this with the church.” Kit Canon 5DS R with 70-300m f/4-5.6L IS USM lens Exposure Multiple exposures 10

Gold Pralines, Czech republic DAMIeN DEMOLDER “Occasionally everything just comes together, and the feeling I get at those moments is what I take pictures for. It starts with incredible light and a dramatic scene, and when it ends well, the perfect person steps into precisely the right spot in the composition – and does it with style. This was just one of those moments, and I was lucky enough to be pointing my camera in the right direction when it happened.  ‘Gold Pralines’ was taken during an afternoon enjoying the low-angled sun of a February day in Prague. The light was exactly as if I’d ordered it from above, and the opportunities were coming thick and fast, like a passing shoal of mackerel at the turning of the tide. I had to ignore all around me and just wait patiently for one golden moment to materialise, and this was my reward.” Kit Olympus OM-D E-M1 with M.Zuiko Digital ED 12mm lens Exposure 1/8,000 sec at f/2, ISO 200

Mending fishing nets, Bac Lieu Province, Vietnam CLIVE MINNITT “In 2017 I was privileged to lead a Light & Land tour to Vietnam with Phil Malpas. This lady was part of a team who painstakingly mend the fishing nets on a daily basis. The gorgeous turquoise colour was enhanced by the soft natural daylight coming through a nearby window, while the criss-cross pattern of her blouse replicated the shape of the nets perfectly.”  Kit Fujifilm X-T2 with Fujinon XF55-200mm f3.5-4.8 R LM OIS lens at 90.4mm Exposure 1/70 sec at f/5
