VOTING IS ABOUT APPROVING BEST PEOPLE & IDEAS Voting in the upcoming general election is a major topic as politicians and pollsters are busy trying to gauge your support for them and their ideas. You would be surprised how many of these politicians actually set out to make a difference in government with great ideas. The fresh ideas and youthful faces always inspire me as I sort through who is who in the field of candidates and what ballot proposals are worthy of my support. This By Dr. José A. Flores election is no different. There are great candidates and novel ideas to consider. As I reviewed the questions on the November 6th Ballot, I am reminded that there is a phrase in the Preamble of the United States Constitution “We the People.” I always focus my actions when voting on the basic principles that guide our democracy, government of the people, by the people and for the people. Therefore, I recommend voting in the spirit of Abraham Lincoln who in 1863 in his Gettysburg Address said, “…that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

Proposal 4: Should In-Home Health Care workers be governed by a Home Health Care Council to establish standards for health care workers including background checks and should they be given the right to collective bargaining? The In-Home health care service field should have oversight and the workers should be protected by collective bargaining. Vote Yes on Proposal 4 Proposal 5: Should a 2/3 majority vote of the State legislature be required or a general election in order to raise taxes? Taxes are always on the rise and rarely come down. A more difficult process for raising taxes may help the people of our state with needed financial relief. It has become impossible for businesses and individuals to keep up with the never-ending tax increases. Vote Yes on Proposal 5 Proposal 6: Require a vote of the general population of Michigan before taxes can be assessed to build international bridges and tunnels such as that bridge to Canada that the Governor intends to build without public consent. Vote Yes on Proposal 6

Brandon Dillon, Mayor George Heartwell and Former Mayor John Logie and Grand Rapids City Commissioners, Ruth Kelly, and Jim White for it’s efforts to reduce penalties for simple use and possession of small amounts of marijuana.

A Brighter Future: The real benefits of being bilingual

According to an article by Allessandra Hickson of NBCLatino News, studies show being bilingual benefits your brain functions for life, and some researchers believe bilingualism can even help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. “From a very young age, children who are bilingual are using their executive control system and in a way that advances its development,” says Dr. Ellen Bialystok ,a cognitive neuroscientist and Distinguished Research Professor of Psychology at York University in Toronto. The executive control system is, “the basis for every hard thing we do. It helps us pay attention to this and ignore that,” says Dr. Bialystok, adding, “It’s precisely the system the brain calls on to pay attention to one language over the other.” This means bilingual children constantly use their executive control systems to switch between languages. And frequently exercising this function makes bilinguals better at planning, focusing, multitasking and problem solving. This doesn’t mean bilinguals have a higher I.Q., but it does mean their executive control systems are more advanced. Bialystok’s 2004 study with Martin-Rhee, bilingual children were faster than monolingual children at sorting objects into bins by shape despite conflicting colors. “Switching between languages is a strengthening agent for the brain,” said Dr. Patricia Kuhl, Co-Director of the Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences and Bezos Family Foundation Endowed Chair in Early Childhood. Dr. Kuhl even goes so far as to say bilingualism, “allows you, in those frontal areas, to make decisions better, to be more creative in your thinking and it’s protective against age or brain disease like dementia and Alzheimer’s. In a small 2012 study headed by neuropsychologist Dr. Tamar Gollan with 44 elderly Spanish-English bilinguals, those with a higher degree of bilingualism resisted Alzheimer’s better than others. And in Bialystok’s 2012 Neurology study of 211 bilinguals and monolinguals, those who spoke multiple languages showed signs of Alzheimer’s five years later than their monolingual counterparts. Speaking more than one language and exercising the executive control system regularly is, in Dr. Bialystok’s words, “the ultimate Sudoku or ultimate crossword puzzle!” “We’re doing it incorrectly,” says Dr. Kuhl about the United States’ strides to develop and teach multiple languages in classrooms. Dr. Kuhl isn’t the only researcher who thinks the U.S. needs to tweak bilingual education programs before schools lag too far behind. In a 2009 study by Travis England in the Washington University Law Review, England details 2001 s No Child Left Behind Act and English immersion programs that hinder bilingual students. ESL programs alone will not lead to higher achievement for Latino children. To develop better dual-language programs, the U.S. would need to start language learning earlier than high school, provide native speakers and educate teachers. Dr. Kuhl adds, “As you can see, successful programs [like Geddes Elementary School in Baldwin Park, CA.] do exist. But that doesn’t mean we’re there yet.” Dual language program in California helps Latino children succeed While children in other countries like China are learning in multiple languages, the United States is battling over dual-language education reform. According to Dr. Kuhl, bilingual education reform is essential or, “We’re simply not going to compete on the world stage.”

Frank Alvarez, the President and CEO of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. A third-generation Mexican American, the man in charge of the largest Latino scholarship organization in the country dropped out of community college and returned only years later, after volunteering in the Army during Vietnam. Once he returned, though, he turned his life around, and he credits it all to education. Now his job is to spread the word – and help Latino students get there. On Latinos and higher education, there has been encouraging news. A recent Pew Hispanic report by Richard Fry and Mark Hugo Lopez found Hispanic bachelor’s degrees as well as associate degrees have reached a historic high in the last couple of years, and these graduation rates have increased seven-fold in the last 40 years, outpacing some other groups. Of even more interest to Alvarez, however is the 3 percent increase, from 2010 to 2011, of Latinos eligible for college – in other words, the increase in Latinos graduating from high school or getting a GED. ”From a statistical perspective this is significant, and it catches your eye, especially during bad economic times,” says Alvarez. ”Perhaps the message, that we should be going to college, is getting through,” he says. Getting to college is one thing, but it is crucial to improve Latino college graduation rates. “Our Latino students graduate at about an 85 percent rate in five and a half years,” says Alvarez. HSF has campus chapters to help Hispanic students connect and receive mentoring, if necessary. English Proficiency and Citizenship English Proficiency Nearly two-thirds (65%) of all U.S. Hispanics ages five and older either speak only English at home or speak English very well. This compares with 91% of the total U.S. population who are English proficient. The Hispanic origin groups with the highest rates of English proficiency are Puerto Ricans (82%), Mexicans (64%), Colombians (59%) and Peruvians (59%). Guatemalans (41%), Hondurans (42%) and Salvadorans (46%) have the lowest rates of English proficiency and are the only groups in which less than half of the population ages five and older is proficient in English. The Nation’s 10 Largest Hispanic Origin Groups

Citizenship Nearly three-in-four (74%) Hispanics are U.S. citizens, compared with 93% of the entire U.S. population. Those born in Puerto Rico are U.S. citizens by birth, and fully 99% of Puerto Ricans hold citizenship.7 Cubans (74%) and Mexicans (73%) have the next highest shares of U.S. citizens. Hondurans (47%) and Guatemalans (49%) are the only groups among the 10 most populous Hispanic origin groups in which less than half of their populations are U.S. citizens. Hispanics of Salvadoran origin (55%) are the third least likely group to be U.S. citizens.

Hispanics More Often Waiting for Organ Donors In America, more than 20,000 Latinos are currently awaiting an organ transplant. Hispanic ailments including sugar diabetes, strokes, and cancer are outpacing other groups. Health Officials are concerned about the increased Kidney failure among Latinos and their lack of participation in organ donation. They say Latinos are among the 18 Americans of all ethnicities that die each day—more than 6,000 annually—because of the shortage of qualified organ donor matches. It is a crisis, they say, caused by misconceptions and cultural taboos. Many Hispanics who are Roman Catholics wrongly believe the church opposes organ donations. Several Catholic Popes have hailed them as an act of love. Some Latinos have the mistaken belief that organ donation prevents grieving families from having an opencasket funeral. In greater Los Angeles, nearly half the people awaiting organ transplants are Hispanic, according to the nonprofit OneLegacy, an organ and tissue recovery organization. Their wait is often even longer than usual, according to officials, because of the difficulty in finding a suitable donor since it is more likely for those needing an organ to find matches within their own genetic background. You may recall the most famous Hispanic to have undergone a transplant is Comedian George Lopez, who received a kidney from his wife Ann in 2005 to correct lifelong kidney problems. His transplant match was easier since his wife made the donor list and they were a genetic match too!

AWARENESS/CONCIENCIA The educational campaign, which launches later this month, will feature regular health and wellness segments on Univision Network’s popular morning show “Despierta América” (Wake-Up America). Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and devastating condition that gradually causes the loss of memory and complications with thinking and behavior. Hispanics are 1.5 times more likely to develop the disease vs. the nonHispanic white population. Research has also shown that Hispanics have very low awareness levels about the condition, which results in them not being diagnosed or treated. As part of its “Salud es Vida” health platform, and health programs will provide information on Alzheimer’s ranging from general disease awareness and specific symptom recognition to the actions that need to be taken to get a timely diagnosis. Additionally, on Saturdays, the Univision Network’s long-running signature variety program “Sabado Gigante” (Giant Saturday) will feature health related messaging by the show’s legendary host and creator, Don Francisco. There is rising hope that Hispanic Americans will get on board with organ donation. According to OneLegacy, the number of Latino families agreeing to donate organs at the death of a relative in a hospital increased 75 percent last year—a record number and a dramatic hike from 40-60 percent a decade ago. We are making progress! En Estados Unidos, más de 20.000 latinos están a la espera de un trasplante de órgano. Enfermedades como la diabetes, envolias y el cáncer están superando otros grupos. TURKEY CLUB SANDWICH

Cuántas veces hemos preferido sacrificar una comida en toda regla para tener tiempo y poder ir a hacer un poco de gimnasia, leer un libro, ver una buena película o, por qué no, para seguir jugando a las cartas. En esta circunstancia se encontraba precisamente el cuarto conde de Sándwich, jugador empedernido de naipes, cuando un día, el camarero de su club social le anunció que su carne estaba servida, a lo que el aristócrata respondió rápidamente: “¡Pues que me la traigan entre dos rebanadas de pan!”. Y así, de esta curiosa manera, fue como nació el sabroso sándwich que todos conocemos hoy. EL PAN Lo habitual es preparar los sándwiches con pan de miga o pan de molde pero, cuidado, porque si viajamos a otros países, como nuestra vecina Francia, veremos que se llama sándwich a lo que nosotros llamamos bocadillo. Por lo tanto, si lo que queremos es un sándwich de pan de molde propiamente dicho, deberemos especificarlo. Podemos preparar sándwiches más ligeros a partir de pan con fibra (tiene un poder saciante mayor), que rellenaremos, por ejemplo, con pavo y manzanas. Aparte del pan que se encuentra previamente cortado en muchas panaderías, se puede utilizar el pan de molde entero, que haremos cortar a nuestro gusto, más fino o más grueso. Las rebanadas más anchas resultan idóneas para sándwiches que pensamos servir tostados. LA PRESENTACIÓN Aparte de presentar los sándwiches en la forma tradicional, en triángulos, cuadrados y rectángulos sobre una fuente o plato, también existen otras posibilidades: - Si se va a servir a niños, le sugerimos que componga una casita colocando dos pilas juntas de sándwiches rectangulares cubiertos con algunos de forma triangular colocados encima, a modo de tejado. Con un poco de mantequilla blanda puesta en la manga pastelera podrá dibujar las ventanas o las puertas de la casita. - También puede sacar, cortando con un cuchillo bien afilado, la miga de un pan de molde entero, dejando hueco el interior. Luego cortará esa miga en cuadrados pequeños que, posteriormente volverá a introducir en el pan de molde. Así, el mismo pan le servirá como original caja de presentación. - Los enrollados resultan muy decorativos porque, al cortarse horizontalmente, forman espirales de colores. - Otra forma muy habitual es presentar el pan sin los bordes. Podrá encontrarlo preparado ya de esta manera en tiendas y supermercados. - Si el sándwich lleva huevo una buena idea de

presentación es cortar un círculo en la rebanada superior (puede hacerlo con un vaso de boca estrecha del revés) de forma que la yema quede visible. Here are some ways to make healthier sandwiches: - Use low-fat or fat-free lunch meats. They are good in sandwiches or cut into strips on top of a salad. - Buy leaner meats, such as turkey, chicken or veggie dogs. - Put leftover chicken or turkey strips in a tortilla to make a cold fajita (add strips of raw red and green peppers and onions). Use fat-free sour cream as a dressing. - Stuff a pita-bread "pocket" with vegetables, fatfree cheese and bits of leftover grilled chicken. - Cut up vegetables such as onion, carrot, celery and green peppers to add to tuna salad. Mix vegetables and water-packed tuna with fat-free mayonnaise or, for a different taste, mix with a fat-free salad dressing. - Chunky bits of leftover chicken mixed with fat-free mayonnaise, raisins, shredded carrots and sliced almonds is a great chicken salad. Serve it in a pitabread pocket. Top it with salsa for a Southwestern flavor. Mix cranberry sauce and fat-free mayonnaise to add to a turkey sandwich. - When buying peanut butter, choose an "allnatural" option. For jelly, buy one that 100% fruit and does not contain high fructose corn syrup. This will make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches much healthier. - Sliced ham and lowfat or fat-free cheese with mustard is great on rye bread. - Make grilled-cheese sandwiches with lowfat or fat-free cheese and serve them with raw carrot and celer

Before beginning the entire process, you should assemble your ingredients. For a single turkey club sandwich, you will need three slices of bread, about three tablespoons of mayonnaise, a few leaves of Romaine lettuce, four slices of vineripened tomatoes, four slices of crispy bacon, four ounces of sliced turkey, some salt and pepper, and four toothpicks or cocktail swords. Use a toaster or broiler to toast your bread on both sides. Cut your lettuce leaves in half and make two neat stacks with it. Lay your three slices of toast on a clean working surface and spread about a tablespoon of mayonnaise on one side of each slice. Place one stack of lettuce on the first slice of toast, followed by two slices of tomato, some salt and pepper, two slices of bacon, and half of your

sliced turkey. Break the bacon and fold the turkey and lettuce so that your sandwich is neat and compact, with little hanging over the edges. Repeat these steps with the second slice of toast. Place the second piece of toast, complete with its toppings, on the first. The second slice of toast should be an effective barrier between the two sets of sandwich fixings. Cover your towering sandwich with the third slice of toast, placing it so the side with mayonnaise is facing down. You can pin the sandwich together using the toothpicks or cocktail swords. Cut your sandwich in half diagonally with a serrated knife; this will make eating the sandwich much easier. Turkey club sandwiches are best served with potato chips and pickles.
