ANNA MARIA CHÁVEZ SELECTED CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF GIRL SCOUTS OF THE USA Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) announced today that Anna Maria Chávez, who grew up in a small town in southern Arizona and rose to become deputy chief of staff to that state’s then-Gov. Janet Napolitano, has been appointed to the top post at the iconic organization. Chávez is set to officially assume her new role at the Girl Scouts National Council Session/52nd Convention in November. Chávez’s appointment as the 19th chief executive of Girl Scouts, among the largest and most widely recognized nonprofits in the country, comes as the organization readies to launch a national celebration as part of its 100th anniversary designed to honor its legacy and create urgency around girls’ issues. She will replace Kathy Cloninger, who is retiring after leading the organization for eight years. Chávez will take over as chief executive after a dramatic period of change for the organization. Cloninger has led Girl Scouts through a historic transformation designed to ensure that the organization delivers the best leadership experience for a new generation of girls whose lives—and the opportunities they face—are ever changing. The wideranging effort has included consolidating councils from 312 to 112, as well as developing a nationally consistent program portfolio for girls that includes a series of leadership journeys, or coordinated series of activities grouped around a theme, and a revamped system of badges and awards that align with the leadership program.

The march was led by community and labor leaders, including Bob King, International President of the United Auto Workers, Reverend Dr. Wendell Anthony, President of the NAACP, Congressman John Conyers, and Congressman Hansen Clarke. "We are struggling to raise our children, feed our families and keep a roof over our heads,” state State Representative Rashida Tlaib, “We should not be living in fear of a knock on our door, or of being targeted by legislation or agents because of our ethnicity or faith.

Latino leaders demanded an end abusive behavior by ICE and Border Patrol, “Immigration agents don’t belong at our elementary schools, and Border Patrol doesn’t belong at our churches and community centers. We will not be afraid to speak out, we will not be afraid to challenge this injustice, and we will not be afraid to demand respect and dignity for our families and community,” said Lidia Reyes, director of Latino Family Services, speaking on behalf of the Alliance for Immigrants Rights. Border Patrol agents have harassed clients and staff at Reyes’ agency numerous times, based solely on their ethnicity. Muslim leaders echoed the sentiment, and pointed to incidents at the Detroit/Windsor border, “Law-abiding Muslims have been surrounded by agents at the border, with guns drawn, sometimes backed up by snipers. They then faced hours of interrogation about their religion— which mosque they attend, how often, and with whom. We’re marching today because we will not be afraid to exercise that fundamental American right we all hold dear: freedom of religion,” said Imam Dawud Walid, Director of the Council on American Islamic Relations – Michigan. Leaders of the African-American community addressed the ongoing challenge of an unaccountable police department and multi-jurisdictional task forces, “Our police department has been under federal order to clean up their act for 10 years, and still we face profiling, abuse, and brutality. Now, the federal government is giving them more resources, without accountability or oversight. We’re marching together today to change the culture of the police department so that they can serve citizens in a lawful manner,” said Ron Scott, spokesperson for the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality.

Although the songs depict a nation surging with high spirits, millions of men were bidding farewell to wives or girlfriends and many would never return from battle. The dance focuses on such poignant dualities.

Entonces mi personaje está embarazada de Poncho “Juanes is an artist in every sense of the word. This sentiment represents one of the many reasons that the Hispanic Heritage Awards is proud to honor this singer, musician, producer and philanthropist with the Vision Award.”

Anonymous Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds ranging from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens to Henry James and Sigmund Freud, namely: who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles hungry for the power of the throne were exposed in the most unlikely of places: the London stage. Rated: PG-13.

Will they be able to find a way to serve and protect those that are most dear to them? TIP: The fewer beans in the pan, the quicker they cook and the better they taste. If cooking more than one pound at a

time, use separate pans. Boiling Green Beans: In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, bring water to a gentle boil. Add trimmed green beans and cook, uncovered, 4 to 5 minutes or until crisp-tender (you may need to experiment with the degree of doneness you like). NOTE: You can also use a steamer basket. Steaming Green Beans: To steam green beans, set a steamer basket with the green beans into a saucepan just large enough to hold it tightly covered. Add oneinch of water, bring to the boil, and cover the pan tightly. Regulate heat to moderate. Green beans will take only 3 to 5 minutes. Microwave Green Beans: Place prepared bean in a microwave-safe bowl. Add approximately 2 tablespoons water. Cover with plastic wrap, leaving a small corner open. NOTE: If you seal them completely, the plastic wrap will almost shrink-wrap itself to the beans. Microwave on high for approximately 3 to 4 minutes (you might need to experiment to get the beans done to your likeing). REMEMBER: The beans will continue to cook after you remove them from the heat source. Either take them out just before they are cooked the way you like or plunge them in ice water immediately to stop the cooking process. Storage: Will keep for about 4 days, wrapped in plastic bag or wrap, refrigerated. Freezing: - To freeze beans, wash, and cut ends. Beans can be frozen directly, or blanched for 3 minutes then submerged in ice water before freezing. Nutritional Value: Good source of vitamin A and potassium. 40 calories per cup.
