HERE ARE A FEW ALBUMS THAT HAVE EITHER BEEN RELEASED IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS, ARE UPCOMING NEW RELEASES AND/OR BOTH. SINCE WE PUBLISH OUR ISSUE ONCE A MONTH, IT’S HARD TO COVER ALL NEW MUSIC BUT EVEN WITH THAT, NEW, GOOD, MUSIC DESERVES AN OUTLET. ANY ONE OF THESE WILL BE WORTH YOUR TIME WITH EACH ONE POSSESSING SPECIAL MOMENTS ALL THROUGHOUT. ERYKAH BADU –- NEW AMERYKAH PART TWO (Return of the Ankh) (March 30, Universal Motown) [Hip-hop, R&B, Soul] She’s an incredibly busy woman who recently welcomed in a baby daughter into the world on February 1st and as usual, she’s tight-lipped regarding her new album. Now that we’ve gotten a chance to hear it, it focuses more on the spiritual moments of life whereas New Amerykah Parth One (4th World War) was a much darker, socially-conscious album. The results are still tremendous, with her voice being the shining star.

METHOD MAN, GHOSTFACE KILLAH, RAEKWON -– WU-MASSACRE (March 30, Def Jam) [Hip-hop, Rap] It’s been a long time since we’ve received new music from the legendary clan but this new supergroup firmly throws away all doubts that they’ve lost any of their swagger. Clocking in at just under 30 minutes, it’s a steady amount of hard-hitting lines that are all cemented by the RZA and Mathematics’ production. It’s a terrific reminder of the magic they’re capable of and a look into three MCs that are all in fine form.

NICE NICE –- EXTRA WOW (April 6, Warp) [Experimental, electronic, pop/rock] This drum and guitar duo recently graced the main headlining night of El Paso’s own Surreal Week with a set that was utterly fantastic. Their music is both graceful with each member looping instruments to create a towering wall of noise. Pick out any song and you’d never guess it was two members but that’s not the only thing, they’re impeccable musicians. It’s worthy of a listen or two and even more so, an incredible amount of energy and musicianship.

DR. DOG - SHAME, SHAME (April 6, ANTI-) [Indie-Rock, Pop/Rock, Retro-Rock] Dr. Dog has always been an undeniably consistent band where each album possessing a driving force of freely employed music. While they’ve never reached the highest status of statuses, their reputation as an excellent live band has found them finding more and more new fans. Their new album focuses on their raw energy and showcases a band hitting on all cylinders; a brilliant five-piece that is nothing short of superb.

SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS –- I LEARNED THE HARD WAY (April 6, Daptone) [Funk, Jazz, Soul] When you’ve got a set of musicians that are as talented, as gifted and as brilliant as the Dap-Kings then you’re already off to a fantastic start. Now throw in a sultry, emotionally-charged, spectacular voice like that of Sharon Jones’ and well, now you’re just playing with me. But what we have here is a group that has almost single-handedly charged to lead the movement in modern soul with affecting lyrics, immaculate musicianship and flawless compositions; their fourth album is no different with enough of that essential power to carry you on, for as long as you’d like.

THE TALLEST MAN ON EARTH - THE WILD HUNT (April 13, Dead Oceans) [Folk, singer-songwriter] His first album was a breathtaking piece of rugged Americana/folk that took the indie world by storm with his guitar-playing, shocking everyone to the core. It may not be a new-found sound but more of the same greatness and it takes off where Shallow Grave left off and then, there’s that voice, that so closely resembles Bob Dylan, it’s incredible. It’s yet another gifted album, with sublime story-telling that should find a safe place in your heart.

DOSH –- TOMMY (April 13, Anticon) [Electronic, Experimental, Ambient] The multi-instrumentalist returns with yet another piece of head-turning music that is neither shy, nor timid. Dosh helps himself by providing fresh-sounding live drums to his palette of instruments and is aided by the help of Andrew Bird on a few songs. But this new one is both thicker and heartier in sound. Nonetheless, when you’re this good of a musician, the melodies just pour out into your music leaving everything feeling gorgeous and lush, as it should.

ROKY ERICKSON WITH OKKERVIL RIVER - TRUE LOVE CAST OUT ALL EVIL (April 20, ANTI-) [Singer-songwriter, pop/rock, folk] This is the legendary musician’s first album of new music in fourteen years. It was produced by the Okkervil River’s Will Sheff and his band is used as the backing band for Erickson’s songs. The music is all gathered from songs that Erickson had long written but never recorded and while it’s caught up in the struggles he’s suffered (mental illness, love loss, shock treatment) it’s uplifting through its grace and power – not to mention that the backing band is utterly exceptional.

STARKEY –- EAR DRUMS AND BLACK HOLES (April 20, Planet Mu) [Electronic, Dubstep, Street-Bass] What’s so remarkable about the electronic genre is not only the massive amount of specific genres underneath its sweeping umbrella but the quality at which this music is delivered with. For his second album, the Philadelphiabased producer created ‘street bass’ to describe his bottom-heavy, clubbanging, special music – all while still maintaining Starkey’s fashionable palette of colors and shifting melodies. The album is filled with towering moments of heavy dubstep but with rapping, vocal singing and plenty change of paces: it’s an absolute beast of an album that should not be overlooked.
