Replace despeRation with Right decisions!

Currently, businesses are facing desperation for payments and demand. People are frantically looking for way outs from the mounting pressure. Be it a furniture maker, turnkey contractor, OEM or a retailer in the furniture segment, barring some of the organised and large OEMs with deep pockets, majority of businesses are fighting with liquidity and demand uncertainty. Material suppliers and small-sized players in the segment are badly impacted.

I can see two contrasting scenes in different segments of the industry. On one side, the large players are exploring options to add new furniture processing lines that are fully automated, laced with high speed and precision. On the other side, small players are shutting down factories especially those catering to the commercial furniture segment. The entire working in commercial furniture OEM segment has become very competitive leaving very small room for small players operating on a low scale, less capital and little margins. In residential furniture domain, manufacturers are busy in business without much growth in their sales numbers, instead, more occupied in fighting competition from many sides.

The reality is, future belongs to either large-sized players with the capacity to retain design uniqueness, brand recall, capacity to move with the tide, along with strong national presence, or it is the regional furniture makers who will rule, especially those that depend on the local market for supply, service and customisation. One can not walk on both the ropes together. These ropes are far apart and not aligned on the same level.

Presently, stakeholders in the Indian furniture industry are largely preparing themselves to find new directions amidst bold reforms taken up by Modi Government which somewhere

indicate a brighter time for big and branded ones. The focused players in furniture are certainly going to grow faster if they stick to continuous upgradation in technology, design and organised working, of course, when coupled with the right sales plan.

The team of Furniture Design & Technology (FDT) have been busy for the past few months in various exhibitions across the world. This issue has covered some special designs from Milan Design Week, Interzum and some relevant content from Ligna. For more, check out the issue.

Grasshopper

re-LAunCHeD

In the summer of 1938 Finn Juhl designed a grasshopper-like armchair. Juhl was not constrained by what was possible, or impossible - and only with help from master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, Finn Juhl’s rudimentary drawings were translated into physical designs. Namely the Grasshopper is, despite its apparent simplicity, exceedingly hard to construct due to its tricky angles, joints and complex shapes.

The only two existing chairs are perceived as some of the most prized collectibles within Danish furniture design. In November 2018, one of the two Grasshoppers was auctioned off for â‚Ź319,000 at Artcurial in Paris. Also, the Grasshopper has already reached iconstatus via numerous illustrations in the design literature.

machinery orders drops by 11%: According to the Acimall Studies Office, the first quarter 2019 showed an overall reduction of orders, which can be considered “inevitable” after the booming growth of 2017 and further expansion last year. On the basis of traditional Acimall survey, the woodworking machinery and tools industry marked time in the first three months of 2019, with an 11 percent reduction of orders compared to the same period of the previous year.

Orders from abroad decreased by

10.2 percent. The book of orders is at 3.7 months, while prices have been growing by 0.5 percent since the beginning of 2019. Revenue figures are recording an opposite trend to orders, with a 10.3 percent increase.

It says that the forecast survey results are clear: for the domestic market, only 7 percent expect growth, 60 percent indicate stability and 33 percent fear shrinking business (the negative balance is minus 26). More optimism on the export side: according to 13 percent of the

sample, foreign orders will increase in the next quarter, while they will remain stable for 60 percent and 27 percent expect a reduction (negative balance -14).

The Market is gaining momentum with the exponential growth due to renovation plans for hospital infrastructure which is well guided by the latest technological development. Patient comfort and for the hospital staffs, ease of functional capabilities are of prime importance; to take it to the optimal level, advancing technologies are imparting useful components to the furniture.

The major factor responsible for the growth of hospital furniture market

is increasing number of hospitals and clinics. Increasing prevalence of different chronic diseases and increasing expectation of the patients towards the hospital infrastructure had also contributed in growth of the market.

The government initiative like ‘Aayushman Bharat Yojana’ to ensure good health by giving health insurance and funding them directly or indirectly has also boost the demand of hospital furniture in the country. Besides, the continuous development in technology and introduction of innovative furniture such as eye surgery chair and advance hospital stretchers advanced mechanised beds etc has provided fuel for the growth of the market.

According to a study conducted by ICRA hospital sector in India may see 12-14% revenue growth over 5 yers. The agency also said that the long-term outlook for the hospital sector is stable with annual revenue likely to grow at 12-14 per cent over the next five years on rising demand and medical needs.

Major development for the industry has been the announcement of the National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS) in the 2018-19 budget that envisages health insurance cover for 100 million families (around 500 million beneficiaries) for a sum of up to Rs 0.5 million per family per year. “Launch of a governmentfunded healthcare plan of this scale has the potential to significantly increase the healthcare spend in the country,” the report said. The agency expects the introduction of NHPS to likely improve the occupancies at implementing hospitals albeit with lower profit margins. The agency expects the growth momentum to improve the credit metrics of the companies operating in the sector.

Medical tourism is also expected to boost revenues, according to the agency, given the affordability and quality of care in the country. Hospital Furniture manufactured in India is also exported to various countries in very large quantity.

lUmber exportS to IndIa rISeS The value of U.S. hardwood lumber exports to India topped USD 664,224 in the first quarter of 2019, according to the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), the leading international trade association for the American hardwood industry. The statistics, which have been compiled from the latest data released by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), reveal an incredible 273 percent increase in the value of exports compared to the same time period last year. In addition, the volume of American hardwood lumber shipped to India in the first three months of this year reached 1,168 cubic meters, increasing by 397 percent from the 235 40

The increases in the volume and value of U.S. hardwood lumber are indicative of the massive potential for the consumption of American hardwoods across many different sectors and both for domestic and export manufacturing in India. In contrast, exports of U.S. hardwood logs to India in the first quarter of 2019 have dropped by 49 percent in volume from 1,830 cubic meters to 930 cubic meters. A closer look at the numbers revealed that red oak and hickory exports in the first quarter jumped to 597 cubic meters

and 249 cubic meters respectively from next to nothing in the same time period last year. In addition, white oak exports also grew to 189 cubic meters from the 152 cubic meters recorded in quarter one of last year.

India has traditionally been a logfocused market. The increase in U.S. hardwood lumber exports is in line with a study by the World Bank, which projects that India’s organized furniture industry will cross USD 32 billion this year. While U.S. hardwood exports to India still remain low relative to the potential size of market, awareness is increasing, perceptions are changing, and demand is on the rise. AHEC believes that this is a key time for the industry to redouble its efforts in India and to try to capitalize on what could be a turning point in the market.

“We firmly believe that the timing is right for American hardwoods in India and that genuine opportunities for business now exist. With this in mind, we fully intend to keep up the momentum in India and are planning a mini convention in Jaipur in October and participation at the MumbaiWood,” concluded Wiles.

LEAVES A LASTING IMPRESSION AT INDEX 2019 The FII Booth & the Gold Lounge for select Architects were the centre of attraction at the trade fair, Index 2019 held in Mumbai at BEC from May 1-4, 2019. Canadian Wood species of western hemlock, western red cedar and Douglas fir were used to create a warm and inspirational networking space. FII was the Sustainability Partner at the 31st edition of Index 2019, a trade show on architecture and interiordesign and materials.

The Canadian Wood booth attracted over 400 architects, interiors designers, manufacturers, real estate developers and timber importers and traders. The event showstopper was the Gold Lounge at the Central Design Atrium. This exclusive, by-invitation only networking arena of 133 sq. m. was built with 100% certified Canadian Wood species from B.C. Canada – a world leader in sustainable forest management.

The Gold Lounge’s periphery was embellished with free standing western red cedar screens; and the interiors showcased beautifully designed and finished pieces of furniture.

The door and door frames on display were made of western hemlock & Douglas fir; in addition, a door and window set made in yellow cedar was also on display.

Other items such as solid wood sofas, upholstered furniture, tables and benches/ stools etc. all made in (SPF) sprucepine-fir, western hemlock & Douglas fir completed the exhibits. Outdoors display of western red cedar decking and an outdoor bench with canopy and planters completed the picture.

The architects, interior designers and the developers were highly impressed with the versatility of the Canadian Wood species and the many possibilities it presented to them to design in wood for different applications in future.

Forestry Innovation Consulting Pvt Ltd (Canadian Wood) The brand Canadian Wood was established in 2013 to reach out to and the ease of understanding of its activities by its target audience globally by FII (Forestry Innovation Consulting Pvt Ltd) - a crown agency of the government of British Columbia (B.C.), the westernmost province of Canada. It’s mandate is to promote wood products from B.C. Canada in the offshore markets and to position it as a global supplier of quality, environmentally responsible wood products from sustainably managed forests by creating awareness and spreading education through information on the wide variety of timber products available from B.C. Canada and the technical support.

Canadian Wood lumber samples and technical information were made available at the booth and the team of wood experts from FII assisted visitors on how best to use different Canadian Wood species in their projects or product lines. This one-on-one interaction made the visitors aware about where to look for and who to talk to for choosing the right specie, grade and size of lumber depending on the intended end-use of the wood.

The best part of different products on display at the Gold Lounge and the FII Booth made with Canadian Wood species was that all were made by manufacturers from different parts of India; noteworthy amongst them

A highly informative presentation on Canadian Wood as the new-age material by Mr Peter Bradfield, Technical Advisor at FII, covering topics of certification, sustainable forestry management, LCA, carbon positive wood miles and endless possibilities of working with wood for interiors, outdoors and structural uses caught the audience’s attention.

Ltd., Udaipur When we talk about OEM, its manufacturing set up is in such a way that a variation of even a fraction of a millimeter in panel thickness matters. If the variation is more than the excepted level, the drilling goes out and the product output is not as desired. For a quality OEM, perfection is a must, which can be obtained only with a quality calibrated plywood. WIGWAM FABRICATE’s quality is very good as there is no gap in between the cores, the thickness is proper and the tolerance is less than 0.30 mm, which is perfectly fine. I personally feel that their offerings are good and perfect for OEMs like us. As an option to imported plywood, it gives better results in terms of consistency of products and delivery period. Mr. Dinesh Gandhi, Sawdust Industries, Nagpur For an OEM calibrated plywood, it is a must to give better results and perfection in output. We have used three to four truckloads of WIGWAM FABRICATE in three months and have not received any complaints yet. As for the customer feedback regarding the usability, we will have to wait for at least six months because this is a newly introduced product in the market. At a considerably reasonable price, it’s very good for furniture manufacturing using machines.

With very few thickness variations, it is perfect for OEMs who have adopted automation. With WIGWAM FABRICATE, we are covering 90% of our production with quality output. In terms of an alternative for imported plywood, it has resulted in a lot of savings at our end, in terms of cost, time and variation in inventory as there is no issue of delivery with WIGWAM. On the other hand, for imported plywood we had to wait for more 45 days to receive the consignment.

The main benefit we feel is that being a veneer finish calibrated plywood, it gives us the benefit of executing the work very quickly. It also saves our cost as we do not need to apply veneer on it before polishing. Its calibration is also very good which give us perfection in making furniture. An OEM will also benefit from its calibration to achieve perfect results. We have not put it on automatic machines till date but I am sure it will definitely give perfect results as it has very less thickness variation. GSP is one of the largest and oldest uS trade preference programme with india for last 43 years. india exported goods approximately worth uSd 5.6 billion under GSP last year. but uS President donald trump has accused india for not adopting business equality policy and has announced the termination of relief under GSP trade Programme. it can be considered the biggest blow to indian industries and traders. in the changed circumstances, exporters of furniture, handicrafts and manufacturers of other products are feeling restless. regarding this hot and important issue related to domestic and global trade fdt talked to various stake holder of the industry and try to find out its impact on the trade.

Due to the announcement of termination of relief under GSP Trade Program and impose the import duty on various products by the USA, the concerns of Indian entrepreneurs, including the government, have increased, even though the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s furniture and handicraft industry can breathe easy, as under the GSP trade program, most of the furniture items can continue to be exported to USA as before. According to media reports after two months the US Government released Chapter 94 in which most of the handicraft items including furniture have been kept duty free.

The range of Handicrafts products, which are exported from India to the USA includes a variety of furniture and

wood products. In this case, the import duty slabs can also vary on different products, while some products can be exported duty free. Industry experts believe that in some cases, if there is import duty on some products, its slab can be up to 3 to 12 percent.

Entrepreneurs associated with the Indian Handicrafts Industry say that the situation has not been cleared since the new announcement to the GSP Trade Program made by the US Government is vague in terms of furniture industry. Due to that they are in a state of confusion and facing huge problems in determining the price of their products and business strategies set forth in the future.

are pressurizing Indian exporters to declare new rates for future business or to complete orders under new agreement or deal. Due to uncertainties of this kind, the orders are being fulfilled on old rates and tariffs by Indian entrepreneurs at present. At the moment, the entrepreneurs are in position of wait and watch.

Talking to FDT correspondent Mr. Naresh Bohra, President of Jodhpur Handicrafts Exporters Federation said that there will be no change in export of furniture under the American GSP Trade Program. There will be no import duty on furniture in America, which is good news for the industry and Exporters.

But due to different categories in handicrafts, different products may have different import duties. This tax can start from 3% to five-seven percent.

If the whole handicrafts are kept import duty free as earlier, then it would have been best for industry.

Amit Kumar Malhotra, Director of the Asian Handicrafts Company says that the end of the import duty imposed by the United States to a developing country like India will be a huge burden.

Due to the strong relations between the US and India, we hope that our government will keep its position better and the exporters will get relief.

Although, after the announcement, our American customers have begun to ask us a new rate and inquire into this matter and raising their query, but due to unclear situation we are not in any position to respond them clearly.

Mr. Sajjan Jangid, Director of Leela Handicrafts (Jodhpur) says that the situation is not clear, but we are working on old fashion. We are paying the old rates on the containers sending to other external countries including the US. If the import duty on handicrafts and furniture is eliminated by the US, then our problems will increase and Handicrafts items will become expensive.

Removal fRom CITes lIkely To be RejeCTed The demand for Dalbergia sissoo (Indian rosewood) for deletion from Appendix II by the proponent countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal under the Proposal no 51 has been rejected in the provisional assessment by the Secretariat of CITES. The CITES Secretariat has presented its final assessment and recommendation on species for 18th meeting of Conference of the Parties to amend Appendices I and II of the Convention. The same has been also notified to them which will draw on these evaluations and recommendations to make their own decisions at the conference about which proposals should be adopted and which rejected.

The 18th conference is likely to be held in the month of October this year. It was scheduled to be held in the last week of May 2019 in Sri Lanka and has been postponed to further date.

The secretariat gave conclusions that Dalbergia sissoo is native to 11 countries in Asia and South Africa and has been introduced as an exotic species in around 35 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, North and South America, and Oceania. The species seems to be

The supporting statement for removal The supporting statement suggests that Dalbergia sissoo does not satisfy criteria A and B in Annex 2a of Resolution Conf. 9.24 (Rev. CoP17) for listing under Appendix II. This overlooks the fact that, when the Conference of the Parties adopted the proposal to include Dalbergia spp. in Appendix II, at CoP17, the proposal indicated that species were included not only under Annex 2a of the Resolution, but also under Annex 2b, which relates to species that are similar in appearance to those referred to in Annex 2a (so-called â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;look-alikeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; species).

The statement also says that Indian rosewood is said to be fast growing and abundantly found in the wild throughout its natural range in India. This seems to be further confirmed by the fact that the species has been successfully introduced in various countries throughout the world. The Secretariat notes that the conservation status of the species throughout its range has thus far not been formally assessed at the global level. National assessments in India suggest that its populations of Indian rosewood do not fall under any threatened categories.

Indian rosewood is used at the local level for a variety of purposes (including medicinal ones), but its wood is the product most valued in international trade. The main specimens in international trade are handicraft items, furniture, veneer, plywood and musical instruments. There is also a formal agroforestry industry in place that seems capable of meeting the demands of the international market. However, there are considerable information gaps related to the conservation status, management and production of the species throughout the speciesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; range States other than India.

widespread throughout its range, and there seems to be a strong agroforestry industry in place in India to (partially) satisfy the demand for the species in international trade.

It further said that however, should the proposal be adopted, no information is available as to how specimens of D. sissoo in trade can be easily distinguished from those of Dalbergia spp. that would remain listed in the Appendices. Furthermore, there is a considerable gap of information regarding the conservation status and management of the species in range States other than India.

They recommended that Dalbergia sissoo continues to meet criterion A of Annex 2b of Resolution Conf. 9.24 (Rev. CoP17) regarding species similar in appearance. Furthermore, although some Indian populations of D. sissoo appear not to meet criteria A or B of Annex 2a of Resolution Conf. 9.24 (Rev. CoP17) for inclusion in Appendix II, the same cannot be said of the populations of the species throughout other range States of the species. And the secretariat recommends the proposal to be rejected.

This is hundred percent true with Ram Punit Sharma, who at present lives in Lucknow, has turned himself a skilled furniture artisan from a traditional carpenter strengthening his talent with passion. His achievement is not less than a miracle as Ram Punit who once used to work as a daily wage worker is now giving employment to many people through his venture. Ram Punit struggled a lot before deciding to become a furniture producer. He used to dreaming to have his own workstation.

His dedication leads his journey on the path of success. He creates attractive and innovative furniture designs and varieties of artworks.

FDT team visited his factory and talked to Ram Punit and tried to understand the specialty of his furniture, know about his difficult journey to become a successful artisan and his current business activities that can inspire others.

He started his career as a carpenter, and now he has many big orders.

Working in Embassy I got an opportunity to go to the UK and understand furniture manufacturers and market there. There the prices are fixed by the furniture manufacturers as they work very hard to make their products, while in India, furniture manufacturers get money according to the customers wish.

In addition to regular furniture such as chair, table, sofa, bed, wardrobes, kitchen, he also takes orders to make furniture from hotels and restaurants.

He also creates handicraft pieces such as Wooden Trey, Wooden Glass, Jug, and Wall Watch, which is appreciated by people and artists as well. “We take all possible care to make perfect furniture. The furniture is neat and clean, fresh and attractive for the customer. Secondly, the use of wood is a very important so we take care of all these and use the best wood that keeps us ahead of other furniture manufacturers,” said Ram Punit.

Responding to a FDT question, Ram Punit said that he has made nearly one and a half dozen of luxury chairs for the Allahabad High Court also. In spite of its low price, he considers it as the biggest order in life. After this, his artifact was appreciated at many government

offices. He got several new orders on this basis. Ram Punit says that most of his furniture is made of Teak Wood.

“But now the demand of furniture made of Canadian Wood is increasing in the market. Now we are also using Canadian Wood in huge quantity for making furniture. If the customer likes furniture made of any other wood, we also make available that particular wood and produce furniture according to his choice of designs. In between, the client is also informed about the process and design of the furniture made through digital media,” he said.

says that nobody at his workstation works as an employee, they are just like family members or partners in the firm.

He expressed his satisfaction with the efforts of his team saying that they are currently earning 12-15 lakh rupees every month and every transaction is on paper which helps keeping their accounts on track. All types of furniture are made without using any machine these days.

But he wants to install some wood working machines as well for making furniture in volume and increase the team as well so that the business can flourish and reach to other level.

The nostalgic narratives The story of Ram Punit to become a successful furniture maker from a carpenter is full of conflicts and hard work. Ram Punit is originally from

Darbhanga (Bihar), his entire family used to work as a carpenter in his area.

His father died when Ram Punit was 10 years old. After his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s demise the mountain of sorrow broke down on his family. The responsibility of his house came on him and he had to start his ancestral carpentry work in the village at such a young age. The income from

wood work was not enough for his family. Therefore, after a few years, he came to Delhi with his brother to find some wood related work or other better than that.

When they came to Delhi, they were thinking that there would be different work than the carpentry for better earning, but it was not so. Due to lack of proper education they were forced to opt for wood work on daily basis in Delhi at some other carpenter. His skill to make furniture which he had learned from his family as a custom such as carving, work with designs and artworks finally turns fruitful. On the basis of this skill, Ram Punit got work in UK Embassy after struggling for many years in Delhi, where he used to do wood related carpentry.

The legacy with UK Embassy and the tragedy He worked in Embassy for almost 10 years from 1993 to 2004. His work was well appreciated there and many times he went to London for specific carpentry job. His work in Embassy was going so well. He was getting everything from money to prestige and his family was very happy, but one day a tragedy happened with Ram Punit.

During making furniture, one of his fingers was cut off. Ram Punit explains that the Embassy people treated him better than his expectation but he had lost that finger forever in the accident.

“According to the rules, I was no longer eligible for work in Embassy that’s why Embassy gave me a good amount as compensation and discontinued my services,” he revealed.

Ram Punit points out that after a few days of this incident, I did not understand what to do next. “On recovery, I decided to continue the work of furniture and carpentry. But, it was difficult for me to work in a company or factory with that disability. In such a situation, I decided to work of my own. Meanwhile, with the help of one of my relatives in Lucknow I got the work of furniture in some good houses. While making furniture at home, a former DIG of UP Police saw me and asked to start his work. After a long journey and skilling in work without one of the fingers in my hand one day Mr Pramesh Goyal, a leading businessman of Timber and Saw Mill in Lucknow supported me and inspired for my own business,” he told the story.

The turning point The first big order came from the Goyal Family who ordered Ram Punit to make some restaurant furniture. Goyal Family also played a major role in getting other orders for him. Ram Punit says that

fulfilling the commitments made with the customers and not compromising the quality of furniture is his biggest priority. According to him, the business environment in Lucknow is very good.

Sharing his experience, Ram Punit further says, “While working in Embassy I got an opportunity to go to the UK and understand furniture manufacturers and market there. There the prices are fixed by the furniture manufacturers as they work very hard to make their products, while in India, furniture manufacturers get money according to the customers wish. Occasionally, furniture makers try to make cheap products by keeping all these factors in mind, which is not good.”

Young entrepreneur Manoj Goyal belongs to a business family who helped Ram Punit at every stage in making him a successful businessman.

Manoj Goyal believes that anyone who has talent, should be helped by the singularity and should be given an opportunity so that his skill can be exposed and above all the nurturing someone’s art ismost important. Manoj Goyal says that Ram Punit started his journey with fewer resources. The way we used to assess their skills, it was right. He is creating furniture with a new type of design. New furniture made by them has made their mark in the market in a short span of time.

In the era of machine and technology, in response to a question about making handmade furniture, Manoj says, “Ram Punit is using the technique in a different way. He has adopted a number of options for this. Ram Punit takes a lot of support from YouTube, Google and Internet and finds new designs of furniture. It is true that Ram Punit does not have machines that are used in any furniture manufacturing plants. Despite this, they make better quality furniture.

In such a way, the skills of Ram Punit should also be appreciated.”

Manoj says that the kind of products being made by Ram Punit is much needed for top class customers. “We are also a regular customer of him.

Whatever we want, Ram Punit gives just it like that. We are also trying to get Ram Punit to merit the status of his class so that his business can get more expansion,” said Manoj Goel. He says that there are many people in Lucknow who like such attractive furniture made

Summer season means the most fire incidents Summer season acts like enemy in the incidents of fire in India. Hotels, Institutes, Factories and workplaces like wood-based panel manufacturing units, wood processing plants such as veneer, particle board, plywood, wooden furniture making establishment, etc. are the places where most recent incidents of fire are occurring these days, because all three compulsory elements or contents i.e. heat, fuel and oxygen required for fire at these sites are present in adequate quantities.

During the manufacturing process in a plant, machines gets huge friction, automation, and tools & equipments generate heat in large. Apart from this, due to the strong sunlight in summer, the amount of heat increases in large quantity naturally in the atmosphere.

RAW materials used in making products and flammable dust arising from various types of chemicals during manufacturing process lead to act as fuel. The third important element in the fire is- oxygen, which should be at least 11 percent, but in all normal

environments including those sites, approximately 21 percent of oxygen is commonly present. In all these circumstances, a small spark also takes a strange form of fire, which has many frightening consequences.

Although there is no any link to fire incidents with any time or season.

Whatever may be caused to the fire, this flurry of fire arises when there is optimum environment. But due to the presence of more heat already in the atmosphere, the fire spreads and flows in hot weather very quickly and rapidly.

Often the heat starts increasing in India every year from April. April to July, there is more heat in the atmosphere than usual. Therefore, the most horrific events of the fire come out in this season. In recent times, there have been many reports of fire broke out cases in wood panels, plywood, Particle Boards, furniture and all kinds of wood based industries and establishments across the country. From April 25, to May 10 that in a period of a fortnight, more than a dozen big cases of fire broke out have been reported across the country, which is related to wood based industries and establishments including plywood and furniture manufacturing units.

The manufacturing process is quite complex in furniture and wood processing plants than other industries. The characteristics natural wood contains and works as the best conductor for fire and heat. In such a situation, the presence of wood in the form of high fire load on these sites leads to a rapidly formidable form of fire and in the moment it results in big losses of goods and property.

Recent big incidents of fire in the Wood Panel Industry in India The major incidents of fire in plywood and all wood based industries during the above said period are linked to almost every region in the country.

In the above period alone, more than dozen of Plywood factories suffered losses of crores of rupees due to the fire in Punjab and Haryana, including the biggest plywood hub of the country, Yamunanagar.

On April 25, a huge fire broke out in the Saraswati Ply Board Factory located at Jagadhri-Chaneta Road in Yamunanagar.

Raw materials worth lacs of rupees were burnt. More the 11 fire tenders of fire brigade managed to control the fire after their hard efforts. Similarly, on May 8, the incident happened in the SS Wood Craft Factory located at Khajuri road of Yamunanagar. Fire brigade team hardy managed to control the fire after 5 hours, but till then the raw and finished

In recent years, incidents of fire in India are increasing rapidly. This is more worrisome for the industrial leaders of the country. Overall incidents of fire occurring in the country every year, about 58 percent of industrial fire occurs. In these incidents, wood-based enterprises and units are in high risk category, which is most affected by the fire. was burnt in a factory called Diamond Plywood near Kheda-Dholka Highway in Kheda district of Gujarat. On May 9, furniture worth lakhs of rupees were burnt due to a fierce fire in the factory of a large furniture near Murri Mata Temple in Rajajipuram of Thakurganj PS, Luknow in UP.

goods, including machinery engaged in the factory, were burnt to ashes. On 29 April, Radha Plywood, located in Suva Road in Dhadri, Ludhiana, also suffered a fierce fire. This was the second major incident of fire within three days in this area. In these two incidents, the fire was controlled after hours of hard work. On April 29, all the material kept in a Plywood godown located at Focal Point in Patiala was burnt to ashes.

This fire spread to the spare parts workshop adjacent to it and the loss of millions of Rupees was occurred. On 2nd May, a plywood unit, named Gupta Agro Company in Taragarh Road near Nasralla industrial area on Hoshiarpur Jalandhar road, caused a fierce fire, the entire stock, raw materials, machinery 68

and shade was burnt down. It took 10 hours to control the fire by fire brigade team. Factory owner Dinesh Gupta claimed to have lost upto Rs 15 million due to this fire incident. On April 27, the Plywood Factory, located at BarnalaBakhkhana Road in Kaithal, Haryana, suffered heavy losses due to fierce fire. Factory owner Binnu Bansal and Satpal Gandhi claimed to lose about Rs 20 lakh. On April 26, a fire in a factory located in Govindpura industrial area of Bhopal blaze with a wooden material worth millions of rupees. Similarly, on May 7, a fire broke out in the Sarvesh Plywood in the Timber Market area of Chandan Nagar police station area of Indore. On May 8, a plywood seat and wood burning worth millions of rupees

Due to these incidents, entrepreneurs associated with such wood based industry have faced the on the spot direct losses of millions of rupees. Due to the closure of industries caused by such incidents of fire, there are many different losses, such as the end of the employment of the workers and the production ceasing etc. These enterprises affected by the fire will need big capital once again to get it started. In these incidents, if small accidents of fire are also included, then the estimates of fire extinguishing incidents of average more than oneand-a-half incident related to fire every day can be easily applied in this industry.

According to the data released by the NCRB in 2015, during the reporting year, there were 18,450 cases of fire in the whole country. In these incidents, 17,700 people died and 1,193 injured. Among them, the number of cases related to residential buildings was 42%, of which 7,445 people died.

Fire is High risk category in every industry including wood panel The case of fire and its risk is increasing year after year and fire is turning as major challenge for the country. The incidents of fire are also emerging as a major obstacle in National and Industrial Growth. Therefore, the fire has also been included in serious threats like terrorist attacks, road accidents, bribery, corruptions, corporate fraud, natural hazards and information and cyber insecurity.

Fire Risk Survey (FRS) – 2017 jointly conducted by Risk Management

Solutions Company Pinkerton and the country’s leading industrial organization ‘Federation of Indian Chambers and Industry’ (FICCI), ranked ‘FIRE’ in fifth position of top risk category, up by three positions from last year’s ranking of said period. The shocking thing is that the fire was placed in the 9th Rank in Risk in 2015 and the 8th risk ranking in 2016. This figure indicates that the risk of fire is increasing steadily.

The risk of fire is the second biggest challenge for many industries said in

above FRS survey. The risk of fire for retail, hospitality and infrastructure sector is at the top 2 position. Though the survey is not directly involved in the Wood panel industry, but by analyzing the incidents and trends of fire in here, it shows that the risk of fire is also the highest for this wood panel industry. Fire risk is also the third number in a very important industry, such as education, medical services and media and entertainment. According to the FRS survey of FICCI, the risk of fire in ‘Overall Risk-Yearly Trends’ has increased in every sector and industry in last few years.

Causes behind increasing risk of fire Fire Cell of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also highlighted the truth behind the rising incidents of fire in the country, which is very worrisome for all. The high number of casualties and material damage caused by fire is due to lax and inadequate safety provisions and response mechanisms.

There is a huge lax in the security provisions and negligence related to fire. According to this report, there is a shortage of 97.59 percent fire stations, 96.28 percent fireman and, 80.04 percent of rescue vehicles in India. Urban fire services are afflicted by severe deficiencies; 72.75 percent in fire stations, 78.79 percent in manpower, and 22.43 percent in fire fighting and rescue vehicles. Entire fire service is suffering from such challenges since long.

Fire incidents are also increasing because fire fighting equipments and related norms not being adopted by industrial units including residential buildings. Several important guidelines related to fire safety have been issued to prevent incidents of fire in National Building Code (NBC) 2005, but they are being ignored at large level. The large number of workforce present in the industrial units is not fully trained on the safety measures during the fire.

Apart from this, the incidents of fire in the country are also increasing due to reasons such as human negligence, the use of cheap and non-certified fire safety equipment, negligence of fire service related government systems and the officials, corruption and bribery are major hurdles in order to reduce and prevent the fire incidents in country.

Fire Prevention and Safety Due to rising incidents of fire, every person needs to be cautious now.

Therefore, proper remedial measures should be taken from home to office and workplaces. According to the Shape and size, structure of the factory, workplace, home or any institution and the number of persons usually present there, it is necessary to apply

fire resistant devices with appropriate capacity accordance to these things.

The following measures must be taken to prevent fire or safety during fire.

Always Dial 101 number and Call fire brigade immediately in any situation of fire. If possible, get informed of the fire situation, the number of people present on the spot and location of incident to the fire brigade team. Never think that someone else has given this information before.

Must install a smoke detector at home, office, work place or factory etc.

Keep checking the fire alarm, smoke detector, water source, public announcement system, fire extinguisher in the building at a fixed time interval.

Practice the fire fighting equipment installed on the factory or workplace and from time to time give training to the staff.

Activate fire alarms on the office or workplace when the fire occurs.

Notify the fire and alert the people around.

Use only stairs and close the lift in case of fire.

Cover your nose and mouth with wet cloth or toil when surrounded by smoke, so that the smoke cannot go in. If you are trapped in a room full of smoke, do not have a way to get out, close the doors and seal all the cracks and the holes with wet towels or sheets, so that the smoke cannot come inside the room.

Keep in mind the expiry date of fire extinguishers. From time to time, continue to servicing the equipment and change the fire extinguishing gas or chemical on time.

Do not allow crowds near the spot when the fire occurs, this prevents fire service and rescue work.

Do not run in case of fire on clothing wear by you, it will cause the fire to flare up. Lie down on the ground and roll over or roll a blanket with heavy cloth and extinguish the fire.
