E M I LY E N L O W ’ 2 2 Dr. Margaret Oakes and I conducted research on the relationship between gender theory and contemporary Shakespeare performance, which was a perfect fit for me because it combined both of my majors – English and theatre arts. I loved getting to connect with Dr. Oakes.

She was fun to work with, made me feel valued as a collaborator and taught me a lot about professionalism that I will carry with me through the rest of my time at Furman and beyond.

I did not expect to love research and writing critical performance analyses, but now I want to continue those things in my career.

ANDREW ALLEN ’21 Through Furman’s partnership with the Washington Center, I participated in a study away internship in Washington, D.C., which consisted of evening classes and a full-time legal internship with the Office of Inspector General.

This experience was incredibly meaningful for me in that it solidified my professional goals to attend law school and become an attorney.

On the surface, high-powered internships are undeniably valuable. But there are many kinds of lessons to be learned when you dig a little deeper.

We’ve infused our curriculum with spirit-lifting and brain-teasing learning experiences of all kinds – from agriculture to writing and, of course, complex training for professional schools.

You’ll apply your learned skills and knowledge to complex problems or quandaries of a more holistic nature, and become a more avid, engaged human being in the process.
