ANNUAL REPORT 2016

Lukas Foundation Centre for young people with severe disabilities. A home and much more!

Letter from the president Dear friends and contributors, It is once again my pleasure to present our annual report. Out of everything we achieved in 2016, I wish to highlight the month of October, because that is when we opened the doors of our Residence Home to our first residents: Adriån and Ismael. Thanks to them and their families, this adapted living facility for young people with functional diversity came to life, turning a dream that began in 2009 into reality. After years of constant work and thanks to the support we have received from you, our donors, associates, volunteers and wonderful team, we have achieved our main mission: To offer young people with severe multiple disabilities a home in which they can develop their abilities, assisted by qualified personnel, and be independent while enjoying their families’ affection. Every beginning is hard, but once we overcame the initial difficulties we were able to welcome Irene and Arturo. Soon our home will be full! Another important project we completed in 2016 was the design and opening of a fully adapted children’s integration park in the courtyard of CEIP Escuelas Bosque in Madrid. CEIP Escuelas Bosque is a school that integrates children with motor difficulties. We were able to build this wonderful integration park thanks to the parents, the school, the Community of Madrid and the Foundation. We can all be pleased with what we have achieved this year, because the slogan of our strategic plan has been fully accomplished: to build new models of care and leisure for people with severe functional diversity. Finally, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to you, because your support enables us to enthusiastically move forward with our projects. With you it is possible to continue with this wonderful work! With warmest wishes, AnneMarie Otten

Residence Home

Both our therapy centre and assisted living facility were designed without architectural barriers and have cranes that are designed to facilitate transfers between specific spaces. The centre is also caring for the environment, as it has a solar-powered hot water system, a rainwater harvesting system, a water recycling system and solar panels to generate electricity. In addition, residents have access to the Sensory Garden, in which they can enjoy the good weather, the scent of flowers and aromatic plants and the adapted swings.

• Residence Home In 2016 we turned our dream into a reality: our Residence Home opened its doors in October and welcomed its first permanent residents, being filled with life and a welcoming feeling of home. Our project, a pioneer in Spain and inspired by the Dutch Residence Homes, began to provide holistic assistance to two highly dependent young people with multiple severe disabilities. And it did so in a very special place, in the Health Cluster of San Juan de Alicante.

““Seeing him happy every day makes me proud. Isma needed a place like this and so did I. It’s a real gift”. Ismael´s Father

“This place always makes you feel as though you’re at home”. Paloma, mother of Adrián.

This home is fully equipped for disability. Residents are cared for by qualified personnel 24 hours a day, without losing the spirit of a home in which young people live. Light, colour and open spaces give this special facility its identity.

MORE THAN 10% OF TOTAL THERAPIES WERE GIVEN THROUGH GRANTS:

Physiotherapy: a specialised therapy for patients with neurological problems, motor and sensory impairment, postural control, etc. as well as manual aquatic physiotherapy.

Dog-assisted therapy: an alternative and innovating therapy that includes an animal as a motivational element. It helps improve the user’s cognitive, physical, social and/or emotional functions.

7

Water therapies: Users have benefited from hydrotherapy through the Osso method. This method treats the person as a complete being, seeking balance and the improvement of visceral, motor and sensory functions.

Lukas Foundation - Annual Report 2016

Occupational therapy: a discipline which approaches the person as a whole, promoting their abilities or adapting their environment to encourage their participation.

Sensory stimulation: our sensory stimulation room uses structures and materials (water bed with musical vibrations, lights, fibre optic curtain, bubble column‌) aimed at promoting basal and multisensory stimulation. This is ideal for people with severe cognitive and motor impairment.

Physiotherapy in water: all of the benefits of physiotherapy in an environment that promotes mind and body relaxation. This therapy improves the user’s physical, respiratory and emotional condition.

Alternative communication: disabled people communicative capacity is improved through the use of new technologies. We provide them with an alternative communication system through the use of an iPad.

Speech therapy: in the mid- to long-term this therapy enables the use of language as primary means of interpersonal communication, and as a means of understanding spoken and written language.
