Today we begin a new worship series entitled Vital Signs. Over the next weeks, we will explore the fivefold promise we make to support Christ's church with our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. These five commitments are vital signs of our spiritual health.

Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost PENTECOST is observed on the fiftieth day after Easter. Pentecost comes from the Greek word for fiftieth: pentkoste. This day celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the church. The colors red and green are used during the season after Pentecost. The flowers on the altar are dedicated to the glory of God and in loving memory of... Howard Allen by Imogene Allen and family

“Shepherd Me, O God"

arr. M. Hayes

Sanctuary Choir with Philip Reesman, violin and Caroline Mellard, cello

God is my shepherd, so nothing shall I want. I rest in the meadows of faithfulness and love. I walk by the quiet waters of peace. (REFRAIN) Gently you raise me and heal my weary soul. You lead me by pathways of righteousness and truth. My spirit shall sing the music of your name. (REFRAIN) Though I should wander the valley of death, I fear no evil, for you are at my side. Your rod and your staff, my comfort and my hope. (REFRAIN) You have set me a banquet of love in the face of hatred, crowning me with love beyond my power to hold. (REFRAIN) Surely your kindness and mercy follow me all the days of my life. I will dwell in the house of my God forevermore. (REFRAIN)

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side; leave to thy God to order and provide, In every change He faithful will remain. Be still, my soul, the Lord is on thy side. Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past. Be still, my soul: all blessed shall meet at last. Be still, my soul: begin the song of praise; acknowledge Him in all thy words and ways. So shall He view thee with a well-pleased eye. Be still, my soul: begin the song of praise.

SERMON

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be; world without end. Amen.

REFRAIN: Shepherd me, O God, beyond my wants, beyond my fears, from death into life.

God of grace and God of glory, come and be known to us in our gathering together; come and be present in the songs we sing and in the prayers we raise. From the busy byways of life, we come to find once again that you are always present and always ready to receive us. As we affirm our faith this day, deepen the roots of our commitment, that we may learn your calling upon our lives. Surround us now with the love and comfort of your Holy Spirit and the direction and redemption of Christ. Amen. *THE GLORIA PATRI #70

DETROIT

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Rejoice! Rejoice! for the day the Lord has made! For the new dawn, for the risen Son, rejoice!
