Throughout December we have been in the process of lighting this tree through our generosity. To end 2013 comfortably “in the black” with all bills paid, we need to receive $218,741. As gifts come in each time we gather for worship more lights will be lit on the tree. Because Jesus, the Light of the World, dwells in your hearts, I know this tree celebrating His birth will burn brightly by year’s end. Thank you for being the faithful people you are.

I know it sounds trite, but I am not sure where 2013 went. It seems to have come and gone in the blink of an eye. It has been an amazing year for our congregation. We set goals to improve children’s and youth ministry and in so many ways I notice our renewed effort to know the children and youth God has placed within our care. Every child needs what are called “5 sticky adults,” adults they can count on to know who they are and to care about them. In an ideal world 2 of those 5 would be parents, but we know that not every child is blessed with 2 parents. As the church, we are called to be “sticky adults” for every young person we meet. I have seen you doing so in remarkable ways. We have increased our intergenerational ministries which offer us great opportunities to be in ministry with our children and youth. We have worked to make children and youth part of worship and mission, remembering that they are fully part of what makes us the body of Christ in this place. As I look ahead to 2014, I see our ministries with children and youth increasing, along with continued efforts in evangelism and missions. The new Leland Best Fine Arts Academy will be fully operational before the end of 2014 and we will be able to celebrate the beginning of what is a ministry that will use the gifts God has showered upon this congregation to touch lives in this city in a unique and vital way. The end of one calendar and the beginning of another mean time for assessing and planning in the life of the church. I want to thank all of you who agreed to serve as members of our various ministry teams for 2014. Your willingness to step forward in leadership means that our witness in the community will continue to be strong. We have scheduled a leadership retreat in Rothwell Hall on January 11 from 8:30 until 2:30. We need all members of ministry teams as well as the chairs of those teams to be present that day. We will set our goals for ministry in 2014, have training time within each ministry team, and work both together as the large group of leaders and separately as ministry teams to see how ministry goals can best be met. We’ll start the morning with continental breakfast and share lunch together. Child care will be provided for any who need it. If you have not already done so, please mark this important date on your calendars. Just as 2013 has flown by, so have nearly 3 years of my pastoral ministry in this place. I cannot express how much I enjoy being your pastor, working with the fine staff members that serve this congregation so faithfully, and sharing in ministry with each one of you. You are a genuine faith community, something that cannot be said about every congregation, and it is a privilege for me to serve as your pastor. My prayers in the year ahead are that God will bless each of you, that you will have the gift of seeing Jesus Christ at work in the world every day of the year, and that together we can make real the incredible vision God has for this congregation.

What’s New in the Library? I AM HUTTERITE: by Mary Ann Kirkby This book takes readers into the hidden heart of the little known Hutterite colony where author Mary-Ann Kirkby spent her childhood. With great humor, Kirkby describes how she adapted to popular culture and with raw honesty she describes her family’s deep sense of loss. In addition, this book is a powerful tale of understanding how our beginnings can define us.

It will be a time for Fun, Food and Fellowship, not only with your own family, but with your church family. We have signed up again this year for the David Barber Challenge Course on Saturday morning. Many of us that went last year participated in this activity and we had loads of FUN! There is an added cost for this activity if you participate. However, if you do not wish to do the challenge course, there will be plenty of other activities for you to take part in. I want to see all of our faithful Lakeview family retreaters sign up again this year, but I want to encourage “new faces” to come and join us. It is a great way to get better acquainted with your Church Family and a great way to make wonderful memories that will last a lifetime!

Trip with the Clergy! We invite you to join us for a great trip throughout Scandinavia and St. Petersburg from June 4 -16, 2014. We will be on a cruise ship starting in Copenhagen and traveling throughout Scandinavia and Russia. A great way to beat the heat in the summer! Andy Stanley’s TIME of Your Life. What time is it? Where does all the time go? Does time really fly when you’re having fun? Maybe we think about time so much because there never seems to be enough of it. Maybe there’s only one question we need to ask. What am I doing with my time? Simple question? Easy answer? It’s time you found out. In this 5-part series, Time of Your Life, Andy Stanley will help you discover that answer. Don’t waste another second. 15-20 minutes of DVD teaching followed by discussion. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
