FUMC Beaumont

During Lent, the season of preparation for Holy Week and Easter, FUMC will be celebrating ways to make the outpouring of love from the heart of Christ tangible in our community. Each week we will bring gifts exemplifying our involvement in the heart of Beaumont. These gifts will be related to and will be taken to particular ministries that serve our community. Spire issues and the bulletins will remind members what to bring each week, and there will be a time in each service for participants to bring the gifts forward. These gifts and ministries will be tied to the scriptures used as sermon texts by the pastors. Celebration Gift Schedule  Sun., March 9 – Good, used clothing  Sun., March 16 – Insect repellant for KAIROS guests  Sun., March 23 – (Faith in Action Sunday) Items for the women’s and children’s shelter  Sun., March 30 – Used prescription and magnifying eye glasses for the Lions Club  Sun., April 6 – Visitation day at retirement centers and nursing homes, with appropriate items for residents  Sun., April 13 – Special donations to “pay it forward” for the Society of St. Stephen

On Wednesday, March 5, begins the season of Lent. We have chosen “To Love With the Heart of Christ” as our theme for the season in an effort to live more fully our mission statement, “in the heart of the city to love the city with the heart of Christ”.” Each time you come to worship you will have an opportunity to bring something that will make a difference in the lives of people across our city. The list of these items is printed elsewhere in this Spire. There are all kinds of spiritual disciplines that can be practiced during this season as ways to put ourselves more in tune with the life of Jesus and what his death and resurrection mean in our own lives. Certainly sharing the gifts we are bring to worship is a significant spiritual discipline, as is any form of giving ourselves and our resources freely. Other spiritual disciplines for the season include intentional reading of the bible, regularly attending worship, and setting aside a specific time to pray each day. A facebook friend posted some suggestions she is encouraging her church to practice and I am passing some of them along to you. Finding time between now and Easter for these activities will make a difference not only in your own life but in the lives of others as well. 1. Write a letter to a teacher who has meant a lot to you. 2. Volunteer at an organization that makes a difference in the lives of people in this city. 3. Pray your way through the newspaper or your online news source by praying for every situation of concern found there. 4. Take a day of Sabbath rest from the internet and any unnecessary phone use. 5. Pray for your enemies. 6. Invite some friends over for dinner and take time to talk. 7. Read your way through the book of Psalms. These are seven weeks in the season of Lent and I chose seven of my friend’s suggestions thinking that each of us could find time once each week to do something to deepen our faith. These are simply suggestions and you may think of even better ways to touch the world with the love of Christ as we spend this season pondering what a difference the love of Christ has made in our own lives.

FAITH IN ACTION, From Nancy Newton I am the chairman of a Faith in Action team which will go to Baptist Hospital to read books and give stuffed animals to patients in the children’s area of the hospital. I have done this activity in Austin and in Beaumont. This activity provides comfort to anxious children and parents in a crisis situation. If you are interested in this service please let me know. I will provide the books and I ask team members to bring a small stuffed animal. You may contact me at 409-201-5494 or 409-861-4621. You will be blessed by participating. Nancy Newton

UMW had a very successful dessert sale at the Oyster Supper. We will be sending $456 to the Giving Field to help with the expansion of their irrigation system. The Giving Field supplies much of the fresh produce that is used for the Some Other Place soup kitchen. The many donations of pies , cakes, and cookies by members of the church insured the success of our sale. Many helping hands (not just United Methodist Women) made speedy work of plating and wrapping . The unsold desserts will be enjoyed at the next Wednesday night supper. A special thank you to Charlie Snoek for overseeing the kitchen and ordering our supplies. Our sale sign was designed by the very talented Billie Crockett. Blessings to all from … Sharon Smith United Methodist Women
