Welcome! Ealing has a huge student market: Are you getting your share? As the list opposite shows, Ealing has a particularly rich range of education opportunities and more than 20,000 students. That’s a huge market. What’s more, they’re already in Ealing, so you don’t need do anything to get them here. All you have to do is to get them over your threshold and interested in what you offer. We’ve produced this short booklet to show you the scale and nature of the student market in Ealing, and to encourage you to consider whether you should be paying more attention to Ealing’s students as potential customers. Some students are hard up, of course, but many aren’t. Indeed, some of our students clearly do have money, from mature students starting a second career to young Europeans mainly over here to learn English but with plenty pocket money to hand. Even those who are less well-off have to eat and drink, and buy stationery and clothes. We have students in Ealing almost every day of the year, not just through three traditional terms. And many are here at weekends too, on part-time courses. A dozen or so national chains with outlets in Ealing take part in the National Union of Students’ discount scheme (see p4), but there’s no reason why you can’t make your own offers. That’s why we’ve added contact details for every education provider, so you can get your offers through to students – and encourage them to spend their money in Ealing. Or publicise your offer through the Shop Local site in the usual way.

The Ealing Broadway Business Improvement District (BID) is a not for profit company established and led by you, our local businesses. We’re here to make Ealing Broadway Town Centre a better place to do business by delivering tangible initiatives to benefit you. See our website for full information: www.ealingshoplocal.co.uk/ealingbroadwaybid

University of West London The university – which recently changed its name from Thames Valley University – operates from two main sites: its traditional site on St Mary’s Road and a much newer one in Brentford (by the M4 flyover), referred to as ‘the Paragon’, with a frequent bus service between them. There is also a smaller hub for nursing and midwifery students in Reading. More than 14,000 students study through one of the following eight academic schools: • • • • • • • •

Ealing School of Art, Design and Media London College of Music College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare School of Psychology, Social Care and Human Sciences West London Business School School of Computing and Technology Ealing Law School London School of Hospitality and Tourism

In addition to mainstream full-time courses studied over three years, the university provides a wide range of part-time, evening and weekend courses, including professional courses run in partnership with more than two dozen professional bodies, other short courses, and post-graduate research degrees, not to mention the Junior Chefs Academy for aspiring chefs who are still at school. The university is very keen that all its students should feel part of the community of Ealing, and takes every opportunity to encourage that, for example through its extensive volunteering programme, and a growing programme of work experience and work placements with local firms. The university offers a range of courses to local firms for their employees, and can tailor courses to meet the needs of individual firms. See the university’s website (or the BID website) for more details. There are, of course, lots of ways in which the university communicates with its students, so to streamline that for you, it’s offering you a single point of contact to use if you want to promote your offers to students: see the box.

NUS Extra – the national student discount scheme The National Union of Students runs a discount scheme called NUS Extra, which is open primarily to university and college students. Students pay £11 for the card* to gain access to some substantial discounts on goods and services, both on line and on the High Street. Discounts are typically 10-20%, and there are sometimes conditions (eg meals discounts might exclude Saturdays). Outlets in central Ealing which support the NUS Extra card include Accessorize, BSM, McDonalds, New Look, Office, Pizza Express, Pizza Hut, Ryman, STA Travel, Superdrug, Tie Rack, and Vision Express. But remember! You don’t need to be part of the NUS Extra scheme to offer students discounts to attract their business. Use the contacts in this booklet and make your own offers. *so they don’t all sign up

Ealing Common

Metanoia Metanoia is a well-established educational charity based on North Common Road, which provides training in counselling, psychotherapy, counselling psychology, coaching, supervision and organisational development. It provides part-time courses leading to both professional registration and academic degrees accredited by Middlesex University, from undergraduate eg Diploma and BA (Hons) in Person Centred Counselling through to doctorates e.g. Doctorate in Psychotherapy. Students are typically in their 40s, and embarking on a second career. Clinical training courses take place at weekends and students bought more than 400 room nights last year. Metanoia also has 60 staff, who are also potential and actual customers for Ealing businesses. One team, for example, goes out every month for a ‘team lunch’. Metanoia also offers a lower-cost counselling service for the general public and can provide coaching to local businesses.

Met Film School The Met Film School, based in Ealing Studios, is the largest film school in the country, with over 200 students studying degrees and other students on shorter courses, studied part-time and at weekends. Courses run through the year (with a short break in September) and for six days a week, and students typically work on into the evening. The Film School has a student handbook which is given to students at the beginning of their course, which lists discounts and offers available. The School also has a staff of 30-40.

Drama Studio London Drama Studio London is a long-established, very well-respected, acting school providing full-time courses for 100 or so aspiring actors, run over either one or two years. With the addition of a fourweek Summer School, the centre is empty of students for just three weeks a year. Courses run 5 days a week, and sometimes on Saturdays and Sundays as well. If you have something to offer Drama Studio students an e-mail to the address below will get a message on the student notice board.

Delamar Academy “The UK’s leading make-up school” is based in the heart of Ealing Studios, with a strong emphasis on training students to meet the needs of the fashion, TV, theatre, and film sectors. The Academy runs a range of courses of various lengths from one or two weeks right up to a oneyear Higher Education course in Professional Make-Up Design validated by Middlesex University. Up to 100 students a year study with Delamar. Courses are taught full-time and as some students come from other parts of the country to study in Ealing, the Academy helps its students to find suitable local accommodation.

Two language schools There are two specialist language schools in Ealing, teaching English. Both are a little outside the BID area though each encourages students to make the most of what Ealing has to offer. And all also add value to the local economy through arranging for their students to stay through ‘host family’ schemes in local homes: you’ll find details on their websites. LTC language school has just moved from New Broadway to Warwick Road, opposite the university. It has around 150 students throughout the year, with an additional 100 in the summer. LTC has an active social programme so that students learn English through visits and over meals, not just in the classroom. The summer school caters for younger students, aged 13-18, who learn English in the morning with their afternoons free so they can be tourists. Contact: Sonya Kennedy, Principal Tel: 020 8566 2188 E-mail: sonya@ltc-london.com 100 Warwick Road, Ealing, W5 5PT www.ltc-london.com Edwards Language School is based on The Mall, and typically has around 250 students, with rather more in the summer and fewer in winter. The school can also offer training courses to employers for their staff. Contact: Tom Easton, Director of Studies Tel: 020 8566 3684 E-mail: dos@edwards-language-school.co.uk 38 The Mall, Ealing, W5 3TJ www.edwards-language-school.co.uk
