A DRIVING PURPOSE HEADLINE

JOHN WHITMORE

Where did your personal inspiration, entrepreneurial/leadership purpose come from – what shaped your views – context? My inspiration for my path came from my background in sport and the urge to be better and win more, in my case to improve my own self-belief. I was a professional racing driver. Having found a way to do that for myself based on my psychotherapeutic studies and experience, I found that I could apply that in sport and I started to train others in sport first and then in business and other activities. What’s the purpose of your organisation? “My driving purpose is to make the world a better place than we misguided people turned it into starting at the industrial revolution with capitalism and consumerism” I have many organisations and activities. Business coaching is the overall simple

definition, but my driving purpose is to make the world a better place than we misguided people turned it into starting at the industrial revolution with capitalism and consumerism. We must evolve to the stage of cooperation and grow up to stop competition in the workplace. What have been your critical lessons learnt along your entrepreneurial journey? Listen and understand what other people do and why, and then explore what they do well and what they have missed and seek the best ways to meet ones goals. Always be open to new ways, new thinking and new purposes.

What are the characteristics that in your experience entrepreneurs require now and in the future? The thing that many people now need and lack most is whole system thinking. This is so essential in today’s complex world, we need awareness about the change, economics, environment, energetics, energy, food, water etc these are all connected problems and we need to understand how they connect and influence one another. Many people, especially leaders are afraid to explore and face the issues. They just think of themselves... especially business leaders and politicians whose behaviour is often adolescent today.

A DRIVING PURPOSE

“Giv beg

ve up fear and gin to trust life”

JOHN WHITMORE

What would be your 5 top tips for purposeful entrepreneurs? “Kindness is love in action” 1.

Grow up and get mature.

2.

Think and care for others beyond yourself.

3.

Look for new and better examples than the normal conservative fearful solutions.

4.

Be more aware of self and others and ones surroundings.

5.

Don’t be seduced by IT and its toy derivatives.

6.

People are more important, as are people skills.

7.

Think long term, future generations matter.

8.

Wisdom is far more important than academic knowledge.

9.

Be kind to others, kindness is love in action. I can say I love you, I must be kind, not just say it.

10. Give up fear and begin to trust life.

Where did your personal inspiration, entrepreneurial/leadership purpose come from – what shaped your views – context? A reality check... well here I am a mother with the flu sitting in my pyjamas and its 9.30 am and yet, I was up at 4am this morning because I wanted to see how our Afghanistan initiative is going – Sam is talking about an initiative that Aspire launched 2 days ago where anybody can share words of comfort with woman in Afghanistan, in 2 days they have had over 600 messages. Sam continues, sharing an insight into her refreshingly down to earth perspective. I sit here in California, stunning views of the mountains, safe in the knowledge that my 2 boys and family are safe, I’m not depressed, facing any form of threats. My life is comfortable, we are in no danger this gives me a massive perspective kick. Talking about herself, she explains that as an entrepreneur trying to make a difference whilst at the same time as managing life as a mother, partner etc

she reflects it’s important to have a bigger view of your own little world and feel like you are doing something. She believes that as a purposeful entrepreneur even when it looks big and scary (her vision), she has learnt that every day you can take action towards this, she has an inner voice that is constantly reminding her that she and we can do something to make this world better. How my past positively shaped my future I’ve recently attended a leadership programme that gave me the chance to explore this question in greater depth. What I know is that the tougher times in my life, beatings from Dad and INSPIRED ENTREPRENEURS

“I’m a normal person who aims to do extraordinary things and I don’t let much get in my way” my Mum committing suicide have made me very resilient and driven. I don’t want to see or hear of any woman going through this I am driven to stand up for peoples’ rights and to protect women. For all my Dad’s faults he was equality focused, he got me to work in metal work as I was the only girl, he made me do an A level in science as all of the boys were doing this. Growing up I was Sam rather than Samantha in my Dad’s eyes, there were a lot of good things that came out of this and we have a great relationship now. What has shifted in me is that with my Mum I was always trying to right a wrong and I realise that I can never right that wrong, it’s like an empty bucket that is always leaking. In many ways I think this is what drives purposeful entrepreneurs,

ALISTAIR MITCHELL

Where did your personal inspirtion, entrepreneurial /leadership purpose come from – what shaped your views – context? I was inspired by entrepreneurship as a young kid my earliest memories are when I was about 5, I remember feeling proud of my Grandfather (my mums dad), he had started his own construction firm from Australia that ended up being a big civil engineering firm that built things like the Humber bridge. When the Mary Rose was lifted from the sea bed it was my grandfather’s crane that did this. I remember Christmas with my family, I would sit on his knee and he wouldn’t give the family normal presents, he would give home grown veg and a share certificate and that is what made me decide what I wanted to do. As a child I remember going over the Humber Bridge feeling immense pride that it was my grandfather’s company

that had built this. So, from an early age I felt it was almost genetic for me to grow a business and I felt stimulated by that idea at the same time. Early education At school I was buying and selling things and was always inventing, back in 1992 I won the young electronic designer of the year for an invention that British Gas could use, I got to meet Prince Andrew and Sir Clive Sinclair. I felt entrepreneurial and loved inventing stuff, especially if it was technological. All I knew back then was that I wanted to invent and build something. I went to university to do engineering, I decided I would go to work for a few years and then eventually leave and go and start something myself. I got some great opportunities to experiment, in university I tried to start things up that didn’t work and so my entrepreneurial journey began.

“Have confidence and de ideas through, you’re nev Out of University and on with my entrepreneurial journey I did 2 start-ups straight out of University. One we never got off the ground beyond a website and applying for VC funding, which made me determined to raise it successfully later. It was and still is a good idea but I gave up because I didn’t have the confidence and thought I was too young.

Life Lesson

Life Lesson

• You need fully committed investors.

• Have confidence and determination to follow your ideas through, you’re never too young.

• Back yourself and your gut feelings always. You’re probably right.

The second one, I was one of 3 founders and we grew this company into decent revenues. It was a commodities trading platform, funded by a commodities company. It ultimately failed 2 years later because it never got enough traction, the biggest issue being because the parent company hedged its bets by putting only a small part of its crop through the exchange. This gave existing (very conservative) buyers a safe alternative route and it meant we never got enough market liquidity to be a viable platform.

• Don’t let others tell you that you are wrong (when you know deep down you are right) just because you think they are more experience than you.

Towards the end I pitched several evolutions of the product (as a supply

24

chain trading solution) to our customers which they liked, and which have since become commonplace in the market, but the other founders had lost their energy by that point. I didn’t push because I thought they knew better than me (they were older and more experienced)

From experience I knew there were 3 critical things:

1

Money to pay for what you need, my partner and I now had the fighting fund.

2

Huddle emerges “Huddle was my 64th idea that I have finally turned it into something, the reason why it became more than an idea was timing, I am passionate about collaboration and knew this was going to become increasingly important” I had worked for successful and failing entrepreneurial businesses, during this time I kept saving up money so that I had some money to start up the businesses, when I decided it was time to start Huddle I had saved up 25k.

Co-founder, if you want to build a technology business you need a technologist, I was a marketer, I needed a coder Andy was going to be my partner.

Combination of two things idea and timing.

Where did your personal inspiration, entrepreneurial/leadership purpose come from – what shaped your views –context? “My purpose comes from a drive for self-realization and a passion for learning how to do new things” Pure & applied maths, physics and chemistry at A level… a business studies degree and then my first career in public relations where I spent 8 years working in leading global PR consultancies (Edelman PR Worldwide, Charles Barker / BSMG Worldwide). During that time I worked in practically every sector including consumer, travel, business to business, corporate, business technology and finally healthcare. And I loved it all, however, frustration and boredom set in once my curiosity was satisfied, my PR abilities

I then created The Evolutionary Institute with 3 other leading ‘consciousness’ coaches and traveled the world teaching other coaches what we labeled ‘Advanced Coaching’ skills. In essence this was a about opening people up to abilities and connections to self that are way beyond the accepted physical realms. “When we free ourselves to access abilities, skills and knowledge that we have no conscious awareness of, this means pure creation beyond what is known, understood and logical”

scovery were very developed and I was no longer learning so much... Time to move on. I had a belief that there had to be something more… more than working all hours for the bottom line of some blue chip… and giving my life to that?! Sooo a process of soul searching, reconnecting with what was important to me, and a path that led to coaching and training where I moved from using very basic coaching skills, to NLP

This has opened up a

A NEED FOR FREEDOM

NICK WILLIAMS

Where did your personal inspiration, entrepreneurial/leadership purpose come from – what shaped your views context? It wasn’t from the people around me! Dad was in a job for 49 years, there were no real entrepreneurial role models, although I had an uncle who ran his own small company. The inspiration came from my own heart rather than role models. I grew up with a protestant work ethic. Work was about suffering and pain, that was seen as good work and what we deserved. At this stage in my life I thought that work had to be endured. Into the workplace…. After 9yrs of a conventional career I craved freedom, to be in charge of my own life. Not in a rebellious way, more about a sense of doing what I was on this planet to do, a sense of destiny a

calling. But I had three years of fear and soul searching before I eventually plugged up the courage to quit. So for me, running my own business gave me the best opportunity to express myself and the freedom to do what I love and that I’m here to do. I looked around and noticed there weren’t any corporations that offer me the opportunity to do what I do and so my entrepreneurial journey began. For me, business isn’t a motivator in its own right it’s a great canvas to make a difference in the world. Even though I’ve been running my own successful business for a long time now, one of the challenging things is to simply allow myself to feel good doing it. INSPIRED ENTREPRENEURS

39

INSPIRED ENTREPRENEURS

“Running my own business gave me the best opportunity to express myself and the freedom to do what I love and that I’m here to do” Business is a great canvas to look at my own consciousness, I constantly see myself reflected back – my inadequacies, the bad, good, loving and generous parts of me all get mirrored back to me through my business. My business is a mirror I constantly listen to the feedback and use the pain for learning and selfknowledge. What have been The unfolding path I’m in the second group I am interested in what is within my heart that wants to be manifested, following a sense of inspiration if you like. I feel myself to be more an artist than a business person. I have been doing this for 25 years and have learnt that inspiration is an evolutionary force that makes you shed skins and grow into greater possibilities. Inspired entrepreneurs have a flash of inspirational that calls their heart they are like the dodgems hooked up to a greater force that is guiding them. Once you are hooked to the inspiration you are on a life long journey and always waiting for further instructions, which is why entrepreneurs often love to start things rather than running things, they

40

A NEED FOR FREEDOM

can get bored easily, it’s a strength that needs to be nurtured and accounted for. Fears, failure and learning I tyrannised myself always wanting guarantees that it’s going to work out, I think that I spent several years stopping my ideas and playing it safe rather than following my inspiration and this has been my biggest failure, following the overriding fears and to chase the money rather than the inspiration. For a long time I chased being liked, security and these things have caused my greatest failures and unhappiness. I have found that success usually follows when I don’t edit the inspiration that I receive. I’ve fallen on my face a few times with things not working out, as these have happened my fear of failure has shrunk tremendously and as a result I feel free to explore and experiment. Failure no longer holds to much fear, shame and humiliation.

NICK WILLIAMS

“One of my bits of advice is get a bit of failure under your belt. Failure no longer holds to much fear, shame and humiliation” Equally, I’m not promoting people to set out to be a failure but don’t berate yourself when you do. When you are doing something creative, inspiring and entrepreneurial you will fail, it is part of the price for being in the ring, rather than being on the side-lines watching. Celebrate and put yourself in the position to fail, learn, grow and then continue. What’s the purpose of Inspired Entrepreneurs? We are in a world that is based on fear, it’s not about fighting fearful thinking but about listening to and finding what is deeply within us, what I do is help people to remember love. It’s about people…..as a child I always had a sense of the person that I could become, I knew there was a different person within me. We are so bound by personality and delusion that we don’t allow that inspiration and love, I help people to become who they have to become, I am about supporting people to be the

person they sense within their heart that they are to become. Growth of Nick I stand for authenticity, for me this means embracing our greatness, the spirit, essence, gifts and talents that are given to us through creation. Whilst at the same time, we can be stupid, vulnerable, afraid, trying to find a way to get a handle on this, whilst still showing up. If you like to support people to show up in our messy glory, in our authentic self, the good and the messy, being an arsehole occasionally doesn't invalidate the brilliance that we are. I find for many people there is a real terror under this, to show our humaneness, a lot of energy goes into keeping the mask on. I’ve done this

Where did your personal inspiration, entrepreneurial/leadership purpose come from – what shaped your views – context? “I’ve been behind the scenes and now I am coming out in the limelight” I was born in Siauliai in Lithuania. My Dad has always been inspirational because he never accepted small, boring and most obvious things in life. He always pushed boundaries and aimed for the unusual, different and challenging goals, he never cared much about what people thought about his choices. We own a historical windmill that was built in the Eastern European war in 1864, I remember that he once exclaimed ‘Sandra I would like you to do something with the windmill’ he built the ambition and always believed in me and made me realise that I could do anything I wanted.

I remember when I was young Pope John Paul and his entourage came to our windmill restaurant during his Lithuania visit in 1993. Seeing a person like this in our windmill restaurant was a significant event. For me, it meant the power of 'small' and the power of the ‘passion’ of what you do every day. It was a proof that other people (even very famous and extraordinary people) see the authenticity and uniqueness in what you do or have, even though you treat it as obvious and don't see significance in it after a while. Do or build something that the society needs, every day.

“BITCH magazine wants to game-change women’s lives” I guess my entrepreneurial purpose comes from having a very clear big vision (that I’m a bit scared about what the completion of it would bring) and purpose. My ambition is built around doing unusual things, discovering the needs in the society and enriching both my own and other people's lives. Entrepreneurial Steps Bringing the World’s Strongest Man to the UK I was the only woman working in the Strongman Champions League organisation back in 2005 in Lithuania. I got to learn and understand the strong mens’ world. I spotted an opportunity, I realised that the WSM competition has never been run in the UK. I have always wanted to impress my Dad, to show him that a little girl can do something extraordinary in another country, so I brought the license for WSM competition. I bid first and I was successful as there was no international competition run in the UK, I spoke with Geoff Capes and Terry Hollands, they didn’t want to make it happen and I did. I purchased the license for 24k euros and got Wembley arena, with Euro-sports, Sky Sports and arena

covering it. We managed to sell out with nearly 3000 people in attendance. How did I make it happen? Hard and focused effort For 3 months I was standing outside stations in London handing out flyers, at Twickenham I was there every day promoting the WSM event. I managed to get nearly 3000 people to pay to come and see the event and we had 2 million in Europe watching on euro and sky sports, this was on Christmas and Boxing day 2009. What I suppose is remarkable in some ways is that I did it only with me and my partner, we called in many favours to make this happen. One of my realisations through this entrepreneurial journey was that I always try to be in the shadow, I’ve never had the confidence to be in the limelight, this is something that I
