From The Director Hello Flagler County! By now many of you have received our Community Education survey via e-mail. We hope you will participate in completing the online survey – it’s quick and easy – and gives you the opportunity to let us know about the kinds of classes you are interested in, and to tell us how we’re doing! If you didn’t receive the survey link by e-mail, you can access it on our website home page at http://fti.flaglerschools.com. The school year has started out great, classes and programs are up and running. Students are working hard making progress towards their high school diploma or career certificate. On-line classes continue to increase in popularity, allowing students the convenience of scheduling their study time around their busy lives. Adult General Education students are being introduced to our Career Pathways program, learning about career exploration, and preparing to be successful in pursuing post-secondary education. We welcome Shirley Lachiewicz as our new Health Sciences program manager at Flagler Technical Institute. Students in the Transitions program have opened up a wonderful café, serving breakfast, lunch, and snack items. Thanks to the students, staff, and teachers, and support from FTI’s Culinary program, for this great addition to FTI. Speaking of Culinary, this career program, based at the A1A Community Center in the Hammock, has become a popular destination Thursday evenings, where locals come to enjoy delicious dinner selections prepared and served by culinary students and Chef Hausey. Reservations are required – call 446-6730. Children served by Adult and Community Education are enjoying Extended Day before and after school at the elementary schools, where they are mixing fun and games with extra homework assistance and computer time. Adult and Community Education is also an approved provider of SES (Supplemental Educational Services), providing free tutoring to eligible students after school at Wadsworth, Bunnell, and Rymfire Elementary schools. The classrooms at our Early Learning Center of Excellence are filled with happy children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old, learning through play. Voluntary Pre-K children are getting prepared for kindergarten at the Early Learning Center and VPK at Indian Trails Middle School, where there are still openings for this free program. To register your child, contact Joannie Davis at 446-6732. As always, we continue to be on the look-out for new and exciting classes to offer the community. If you have a special talent and would like to teach a class, contact Ronee King at 446-6730. And don’t forget to ‘like’ us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter! How Will You Advance to the Next Level? College & Career Preparation is the Key!

Another GED Success Story! As Told By Mr. Ralph Lightfoot GED Instructor, Carver Community Center

Did you know that the majority of the fastest growing jobs require more than a high school diploma – either a postsecondary certificate or an Associate’s degree?

Have you ever heard the saying, “it takes a village to raise a child?” Sometimes it takes a village to help a student obtain a GED diploma. Shawna Green is such a student. Shawna is the mother of three young children. She dropped out of high school in the eleventh grade, after she became pregnant with her first child. Shawna lives in Bunnell with Patrick, her significant other, who totally supports her efforts to advance her education. He would supervise the children while Shawna was in class. She lived across the street from the Carver Gym where the GED class is held. She would see me pull up to the gym and get out my car with a backpack and an arm full of books. She asked, Elijah Emanuel, who coordinates activities at Carver, what was going and he told her that I was conducting GED classes. The very next week Shawna signed up for the class. Shawna completed the GED training and successfully passed the GED test with the help of the “Village.”

We are currently offering a college preparation course available exclusively for our adult high school and GED students. Students will prepare for the PERT, ACT, and/or SAT college placement tests, as well as learn college success skills, such as, organizing, studying, note-taking and listening. Career choices will be explored by looking at personality, interests, and strengths. This course is designed to be taken while you are still working toward your high school diploma. If your next step is to go on to college or other post-secondary education, see your teacher or Mr. Amato to be recommended for this additional course. Be ready to succeed! This is all made possible from a Career Pathways Grant. The Career Preparation course is held Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., or Monday through Friday, 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.

How did the village help? The GED class in Bunnell was encouraged with the support of the Flagler County Commissioners, especially Barbara Revels and made possible by Janet Valentine, Superintendent of Flagler County Schools, which provides funding for the class. Jenny Crain-Brady, a Commissioner on the Bunnell Board of Commissioners, provided a scholarship for the first student to pass the GED test as a result of the class at Carver Gym, which Shawna was a recipient of. Commissioner Brady also stopped by the class on many nights with refreshments for the students. The Flagler County Sheriff’s Department also played a role by providing a computer at the request of Ms. Brady. Veronica Maggs, of Adult Education’s Make-it-Take-it program, also provided much needed computer equipment.

Improve Your English Language Skills Maximize your ability to read, write, and speak English effectively. Classes are available daytime or evening at Flagler Technical Institute and mornings at Rymfire Elementary School - or access class anytime from anywhere by taking ESOL Online. Registration is held at Flagler Technical Institute, 2nd floor, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Tuition is only $30 for Florida residents (1-year residency) or $120 (less than 1year Florida residency). Bring two forms of residency documentation. ESOL students will take the CASAS test which is available weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. or at 1:00 p.m. Evening testing may be arranged. For information call Guadalupe at 446-7612 ext. 1834.

I became interested in the program at the urging of my friend, Jerusha Logan, a community activist. She is constantly seeking ways to help the disadvantaged in our community. Virginia Giaramita, Director of Adult and Community Education/Flagler Technical Institute, hired me to teach the class and has been tremendously supportive. Gloria Sward and Renee Berry of Virginia’s staff have been extremely helpful to me with administrative details. As a result of this village’s efforts, Shawna is enrolled in the Medical Administrative Specialist program here at FTI. She is happy to be realizing her dream to train in the health care field and ultimately become a nurse… thanks to the Village!

Students who register for On-line ESOL must attend a Class Orientation on Monday, October 31 at 12:30 p.m. at Rymfire Elementary School. Check in at the front desk for a Visitor’s Pass.

The Adult Activities Center Hosts First Talent Show The Adult Activities Center has been a busy place! The students hosted their first talent show and invited their families and their friends from Adult Education and Flagler Technical Institute. The students had a great time planning for months to get ready. They picked the songs and talents they would present, and many of them presented more than one talent. They also helped Ms. Sally pick and download songs from iTunes, and helped Ms. Beverly McKinnon with all the props, costumes, and backdrops. Virginia Wunderle and Luz Idica were busy elves (staff) running around lending a helping hand with costume changes, music, and photos. (Did you see Ms. Luz in those tights???) The students helped decide on and prepare the menu for the reception too! They served finger sandwiches made from ham, egg, & chicken salad with garnishes, homemade goodies, punch, and fruit kabobs on frilled toothpicks. The students helped get their Center ready for the guests that day too; tidying, cleaning, and decorating. The reception was set up in the smaller room and students had to learn how to be patient and be good hosts/hostesses and let their guests eat first – a hard skill to learn when you have always been allowed to go first - now they are taking care of their guests. An excellent lesson!

Dwarfs in "HI HO" were Michael Mottola as Dopey, Audin Anderson as Happy, Drew Hamilton as Bashful, Jack Sears as Sleepy, Frank Turner, Jr. as Doc, Frank Napolitano as Grumpy, and Ron Tantay as Sneezy. We even included Audin's Grandson, Jordon who rode in Grandpa's wheelchair with him. Patti Petrosky and Drew Hamilton did a rousing rendition of the Beer Barrel Polka with Patti throwing in some unprecedented moves that had everybody laughing! Rachael Pflum, Cindy Crosswhite and Bonny Milich also did an adorable musical skit to "Lollipop Lollipop" by the Chordettes. A great time was had by all, and the last learning lesson was to thank their guests for coming, and tell them goodbye. And then, of course, to help clean up and put it all back to "normal." The support of our wonderful caregivers was outstanding and we have also enjoyed adding a new "entertainer" to our AAC activities - Ms. Jen who comes to do Yoga with us! We first met her at Whispering Meadows Ranch, and she is now a licensed YOGA Instructor.

Audin Anderson greeted all the guests and gave out the program designed by Ms. Virginia. Rachael Pflum was the MC and introduced the acts. Michael Mottola told some funny jokes with audience participation. His dad, Bobby, said he kept his sunglasses on the whole time because he had tears in his eyes at how amazing they all were! Margaret Mayer and Jack Sears did a skit "Ma He's Makin' Eyes at Me", with Cindy Crosswhite as their mother. Ann Wintergrass and Frank Napolitano did "By The Light of the Silvery Moon" with Audin Anderson as THE MOON. Ms. Ann looked beautiful with her parasol! Frank Napolitano and Carrie Walker crooned the 'ole Frank Sinatra song, "It Had To Be You". Frank Napolitano, Jack Sears, Frank Turner Jr, and Ron Tantay did a cute routine of "Take Me Out To The Ballgame", and so did Michael Mottola and Drew Hamilton as "Yankee Doodle" with Drew being the horse in full costume! "The Three Little Pigs" and "The Big Bad Wolf" showed up in a skit too with Frank Turner, Jr. playing the part of The Big Bad Wolf complete with huffing and puffing and blowing the houses down. The backdrop was outstanding and so were the pink pig snouts sported by Ron Tantay, Jack Sears, and Drew Hamilton. Elizabeth Jones left no dry eyes in the house when she sang, "I Hope You Dance". It made everybody think about how we should live our lives day-to-day. Bonny Milich did an outstanding job leading the John Phillips Sousa Marching Band and also playing Snow White in the 7 Dwarfs skit. The

The AAC is a busy, happy place! If you like to do simple exercises, have fun, play table games, do crafts, and work on keeping your skills and your brain sharpened, then give Ms. Sally a call at the Adult Activities Center, located in portable #5 at Flagler Technical Institute behind Kohls and CVS. We charge $55 per week if you pack your lunch, and take people who need minimal assistance. Come join in the fun at the Adult Education AAC! You can call us at 446-6744 to make an appointment.

Flagler Small Business Incubator Program Electric Bike Workshops

Be A Child’s Hero In The Guardian Ad Litem Program

Come find out what the excitement is all about! Attend this unique one-day workshop to discover a relatively new means of transportation called the E-Bike or electrically pedal assisted bicycle, designed for both recreation and as a means of alternate travel. 260 million E-Bikes will be sold by 2016 throughout the world. The Federal Government has even designated a classification for the EBike, recognizing the importance of this type of powered transportation in our country's future. So Why Ride a Pedal Assisted Electric Bike (E-Bike)?

With so many stories in the news recently about serious abuse inflicted upon children at the hands of their caregivers, many people are asking, “What can we do to help?”

1) HEALTH: An E-Bike is an incredibly seductive form of exercise. You won't ever need to force yourself to get on the bike; you'll want to! You still can get exercise, you just don't ache. If you have physical disabilities or encumbrances, an EBike can mean all the difference in the world. If you're just out of shape, an E-Bike can mean feeling healthier day in and day out. You can ride the E-Bike three different ways: ♦ pedal the E-Bike as a traditional bicycle; ♦ have the power "assist" your pedaling when you are tired, heat exhausted, or just need a little extra boost; ♦ or let the motor itself bring you back home! 2) CONVENIENCE: An E-Bike is an exceptionally convenient and economical form of transportation. It’s simple and easy to ride. The E-Bike is pollution free and silent. Some even fold up to take with you in the trunk of your car! 3) FUN! Once you demo an E-Bike, you will see what the commotion is all about and how much fun they are to ride! Learn how you can convert YOUR bicycle into an E-Bike, what the requirements are …OR… if you do not own a bicycle, let us

Fortunately, it only takes everyday people, like you, to make a difference. The problem is most people don’t know how or where to begin; most have never heard of an amazing Statewide program that advocates for abused, neglected, and abandoned children. Do you need a special education? No, you just need to have compassion, and a good amount of common sense. The Guardian Ad Litem Program provides the training needed so that you can become a voice for these children. It is a volunteer-based program that serves the community at no cost to taxpayers. With approximately 500,000 children across the United States in foster care, and 12 million foster care alumni, it is hard to ignore the impact of child abuse and neglect on our nation’s next generation. This is not a problem happening ‘elsewhere.” In our community alone there are nearly 1,900 in the Dependency System. We have children who enter our program as young as one day old! These children have done nothing to create the circumstances that they are in and all are in great need of a friend, a mentor, a Guardian. A brief training, and volunteering just a few hours a week and you could be a child’s “Guardian Angel.” Our next training classes are scheduled for October (date TBD) and November 10th from 8:30am-5:30pm. If you would like to learn more please visit our website at www.GuardianAdLitem.org. You can also contact me directly at 386-235-2297 or Barrie.Michaels@gal.fl.gov.
