But they are much more than you might expect. We focus on a wider range of goals that takes into account not only academics, but also personal challenges you may be facing as well as career and life planning.

FSU offers services for students who are low income, first-generation college students, or disabled. We provide an array of support services such as tutoring, advising, and support workshops. FSU is committed to helping you reach your goals through educational support and activities that enhance academic skills and improve retention and graduation rates.

Nail your job interview. Career development is a lifelong process of exploration and decision-making; that’s why the Career Services staff will help you locate employment and hone your professional skills while you are a student and even after you graduate.

You’ll have access to one-on-one advising and career planning, exciting internships, and many more resources focused on bringing your education to life. KHALID M. LODHI, MPS, D.Sc

H

OW DO YOU BUILD a world class Forensic Science Program from the ground up? You ensure that Dr. Khalid Lodhi is a part of the team. With the media induced popularity of forensics that has resulted from television shows such as “CSI” and “Bones”, students everywhere are deciding that they want a real life piece of the action. In 2006, Dr. Lodhi led efforts to expand FSU’s Forensic Science Program, which is the only science based program of its kind in the state of North Carolina. And his first order of business was to ensure that students had access to state-of-the-art facilities and lab equipment – the same equipment that is being used in actual crime labs across the country. His single commitment is to provide the type of instruction and hands-on training that will place graduates of the program among the most competitive in the nation.

Having studied in Pakistan, the Philippines, Japan and the U.S., Dr. Lodhi served as a Yoneyama Rotary Scholar, an Asia 21 Scholar and a UNESCO Research Fellow. He then combined his academic training with several years of industry experience, ultimately working over 100 cases in both public and private crime labs. A recent recipient of the Kenan Fellowship Award for mentoring teachers, Dr. Lodhi clearly knows what it takes to groom and develop students. Explaining that students receive personalized attention, even in upper level classes, Dr. Lodhi proclaims that one of the very best things about FSU is the fact that, “You know the students and the students know you.” FSU Associate Professor of Forensic Biology FAYETTEVILLE FAYETTEVILLE STATE STATE UNIVERSITY UNIVERSITY 99

HEN SANDHILLS COMMUNITY COLLEGE transfer student Paige Horne visited FSU, “It felt like home. I clicked with the team here.” The senior volleyball setter received both a volleyball scholarship and a Bronco Scholarship. Her coach has high expectations for her players, with twice-a-day practices and a community service requirement, and Paige, 21, often returns to Sandhills on Sundays to volunteer leading volleyball practice. “You have to be disciplined,” Paige says, but she doesn’t mind the hard work. She grew up with the expectation that she would go to college, and giving back to her community has been a way of life for her. She’s played volleyball since 9th grade and attended her Pinecrest High School’s summer volleyball camp. After graduating from high school, she returned there to teach younger campers skills, so that they will have the foundation they need for success in high school. FSU is providing the foundation for Paige to accomplish her goals: to be a high school math teacher and coach. FSU helps students obtain their required classes and find financial assistance if it’s needed. “They make it very easy for you,” Paige says. “Whenever you have a question or a problem, everyone here is on their game.” Major: Secondary Mathematics Education Scholarship volleyball setter
