selected FSP, with whom they have a long history of cooperation. "FSP is a familiar and reliable surface treatment partner, with whom we have worked since the 1990s," says Kärkkäinen. In 2013, FSP provided surface treatment for 12 reels or winches. The project was carried out with the same concept and delivery amounts as in the summer of 2012, when FSP was also in charge of component surface treatment at the Loviisa workshop. Thermal spraying ensures protection for the paintwork The significance of this project is highlighted by the fact that the largest machined components weigh approximately ten thousand kilos, are approximately 6.5 metres in diameter and 2.5 metres in height. For the purposes of this project, FSP's surface treatment operations are integrated as a part of the production work at the Loviisa workshop. For Hollming Works, the goal is to focus on their own core skills and develop them further, and to manufacture complex steel structures with a professional surface treatment partner. The high level of quality that is required in this particular project can be seen, for example, in that the sea cable reels get a zinc coating that is thermally sprayed on the components after washing, cleaning and sandblasting. Thermal spraying is a procedure where zinc is melted and then sprayed onto a surface with compressed air. The result is a high-speed mist consisting of tiny droplets, which is sprayed on the rough and blasted surface of an iron component, where it forms a coating. Afterwards the surface is painted twice, first with a primer and then with a top coat. "Thermal spraying is a complex surface treatment procedure which protects the paintwork from corrosion caused by salty sea water. Paint sticks to a thermally sprayed surface extremely well, and the procedure provides long-lasting protection against corrosion and erosion," explains FSP Foreman Marko Timonen, who has more than 20 years of experience of demanding surface treatment projects.
Punctual deliveries Top-quality surface treatment work is guided by standards, and compliance with these standards is monitored with inspections. During the entire process, FSP keeps a detailed record of the conditions of the sandblasting and painting phases, and of the thickness of the paint film. In this particular project, the customer Kongsberg Evotec has defined specific requirements for the surface treatment. "With regard to the project of summer 2012, our careful and vigorous quality control work meant that we did not have to do a single corrective operation afterwards because of, say, imperfect surface treatment," explains Timonen. According to Kärkkäinen, another important key feature of cooperation is that the project proceeds on schedule. The customers of Hollming Works are accustomed to receiving detailed, high-quality products as punctual deliveries. Therefore it is important to plan the work process carefully, so that the surface treatment work is carried out quickly and exactly at the right time during the workshop supply chain. Timonen states that the delivery cycle of one large-scale reel is approximately five working days, during which the reel goes through all the different stages of surface treatment. The third key feature is costeffectiveness, which means that Kärkkäinen values good pricequality ratio in a surface treatment partner. For this reason, he has a positive attitude towards extended cooperation with FSP in the future projects of the Loviisa workshop. ■
